Best Energy/Electricity plans for NSW and other states

Hi,
My current electricity plan with Origin ends this month.
I've been getting 25% discount for 1 year which has been great savings.
But Origin can now only offer 12% discount for the next 12 month.

I was wondering if any have found a better offer for the Sydney & Sydney West areas?

Thanks in advance.

    Hey guys

I recently finished my contract with origin and while looking for best deal found Red Energy (Australian owned and Australian call centre). Its 12% discount (on everything, rates, service charge and gst) and a $100 rebate applied to first bill. Only thing it is on a 2 year contract.

Mod: Referrals not permitted in comments

Any questions about it and their service drop me a msg

    Hope this helps

    • The 12% discount is advertised on their website.

The Red Energy Rewards programme includes the ability to purchase Gift Cards
Are they discounted? and is there a delivery fee?

      • Sorry I should clarify, I meant the $100 first bill rebate might not be advertised on their site (it was first offered through iselect but signed up directly)
No idea about the gift cards sorry I just signed up recently and havent looked into it yet.

        • Just had a look through Iselect - the sign-up bonus showing is now only $50 - which probably is the customer referral rate if you go direct

        • If it helps, I mentioned to redenergy what deal iselect gave me and said id rather go directly to ensure smooth changeover. They were happy to offer the same.

As I said it might be worth mentioning to rednenergy that your referral/friend got x deal id be happy to sign up if I got the same.

Hi andyman1908, I signed up today and used your referral so look forward to your $50.

They wouldn't match the $50 from iselect and I couldn't add the referral on the iselect site oh well but at least I got them to reduce the termination fee incase I see a better offer first year $95 and $45 second.

        • Thanks buddy. Appreciate it.

So redenergy are no longer giving the $100 rebate?

Edit: Sorry mods didnt realise referral info cant be published on posts. If anyone does decide to join redenergy i appreciate if u can use my referral (pm me, im always checking ozb frequently so will reply quickly :))

I found a reference to the $100 credit offer. If came up in a (2 year) comparison on this site: http://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au
          Offer ID: RED4954MR

          $100 Credit Offer
Customers must enter into an Agreement with a Fixed Term of not less than 2 years and not terminate that Agreement during the Cooling-Off Period. Credit applied to the first bill issued.

        • edit nvm

        • Thanks Ana! I checked before I signed up and didn't see that small print offer, I called up and they will credit it, yay.

        • Do you know when this offer ends?

        • Offer is still available as of today. Just a heads up though, that accepting the $100 credit causes your termination fees to increase ($195 in first year, $95 in second year).

Check out my update post here if you need come more info. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/126223

        • Thanks Ana!

          You're welcome.

A RedEnergy Referrals page has been created.
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/red_energy_referral_links

    • Thanks for the info andyman1908.

I just called Red Energy and they advised I'll be stuck with my current electricity supplier until the next meter reading (for me it's Feb 2014).

      • Nps.

Yeah same here actually. I just missed the cutoff for the last meter reading so mine will be with RedEnergy from around Feb 14 also.

    • I found the reference to the $100 bill credit (& higher termination fees) and successfully used that to sign up, and used the referral.
Only problem is I've just missed the meter reading and have to wait 3 months for the next one.
The person who checked the signup did offer to request an early meter reading for $63, however I declined this because I estimated that the discount off my expected bill would not be that much.

    • The discount sounds good, but what are the rates?

      • Regulated rates in NSW so everyone pays the same. Just gotta fight for the best % discount :)

  • Letterbox deals has an advert for 15% off usage rates at Dodo Electricity on automatic payment plan when you pay on time.
Get $50 off your first bill - only available to new customers who quote the code during signup.
Quote DPG#LBD50 when you sign up.
    Expires 31/1/2014

    • Had a look at this - the Red Energy 12% discount including service charge works out as being 1.5% cheaper than Dodo 15% on usage - this is based on my last energy bill.

      • Dont forget its off gst also! Everybit counts.

  • Congngo did you fit a deal that you thought was good, I would be interested in knowing as I find this sort of stuff overwhelming :-)

  • iSelect suggested RedEnergy for Electricity (as per above) and AGL for Gas (5% usage, 3% on time, 2% direct debit discounts) for my postcode 2065.

  • I did my own research and thought Red Energy's 12% was better than Origin's 8% discount on offer. However, looking closer at Red Energy's rate c/kWh, is more expensive than Origin's? From the iSelect website, RedEnergy's rate is at 31.11c (ex. GST), whereas Origin's rate is 24.90c (ex. GST). After 12% and 8% discounts respectively, Origin is still cheaper. Am I missing something?

    • Pretty certain if your from nsw all rates are regulated and the same so nice and simple, just look for the biggest % discount.

      • That is what I thought too. However…

Red Energy Aus Grid 27.39 cents per kWh for first 10.959kWh per day
Momentum 25.2 cents per kWh Peak Block 1 Rate
Unless I am picking up the incorrect rates for RedEnergy?

        • Maybe check redenergy website directly. When i was signing up on the phone the call centre lady quoted me the rates and they were the same as what origin were charging me on my last bill

      • Ok, am convinced now that the rates are the same in NSW. Thank you.

Then in terms of biggest disc, isn't Dodo's 15% the biggest?

        • Im pretty sure dodo dont discount the service charge or gst. In my case redenergy ended up a better deal.

        • Dodo's discount is just on the usage charges.
RedEnergy's discount is on the whole bill.

  • service to property or daily supply charge comparison

  • Energy Watch said Origin Energy rate was 24.9 kWh and then suggested that my best option would be Energy Australia 24.90 kWh, & 71c day with a 12% usage discount. Early termination $150 in 1st year, $50 in 2nd year.

  • I saw a posting on the site the other day about someone compiling a spreadsheet of electricity prices in NSW.

Has anyone done a similar analysis for Victoria.

Just got the now annual price rise letter from Energy Australia. Really getting tired of this blatant thieving. But of course we have no choice, we need power.

I still have about 9 months to go on current contract. Not sure what happens if I break it, but there has to be someone cheaper than Energy Australia.

    Thanks

  • My attempt at putting a spreadsheet together comparing the providers in NSW can be found in this thread.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/126223

    • Firstly, thanks for making this available. Really appreciate the information.
The addition of the connection and disconnection fees for a new customer are not applicable to those of us that already have a connection. Could you please add a subtotal column that does not include these?
As per my comment above Energy Australia will provide a 12% discount.

      • Should be updated now. Thanks for the feedback.

  • This looks to be a comprehensive comparison site provided by the government
    http://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au

  • Updated the spreadsheet. Sorry for the inconvenience yesterday.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/126223

  • where does it mention about 100$ discount on first bill..Is it still applicable on 17/12/2013 ?

I rang them last week and initially the rep said it was not available, however when I mentioned where I had found it, the rep checked with a supervisor and it was available - just with a higher termination fee.

If this helps you get an additional $50, then please PM me for my user code to use as a referral.

      • Will add to my post that if seems you have to ask specifically for a two year contract, with 100 dollar credit, while acknowledging that the early termination fees increase! Hope that helps!

    • Will PM you the details of the guy I spoke to!

      • Could you please PM me as well with your referral code? Thanks.

        • No problem!

  • I am in the same boat.
after some research , my electricity is with Dodo now.
    15% discount for usuage
and $25 dollar credit if you have need a promotion code, I have one.

still checking on my gas , Dodo don't have gas service.
My current one , Origin's discount dropped from 25% to 8%.

    • Interesting choice with Dodo, may I ask what drew you to them?

You may be able to get Origin up to 12% if you threaten to leave. That is what they are currently giving new customers.

      • There is no contract from Dodo, so I can keep looking for better offers :)

        • Sign up with Click Energy. 17% discount on total bill. No contract too.

        • Are you sure there are no connection/disconnection fees?

        • Here's the fact sheet (Ausgrid area in NSW). No lock in contract. No connection fee. No disconnection fee.

          https://www.clickenergy.com.au/energy-price-fact-sheets/ausg…

This fact sheet says discount applies for 12 months. But if you sign up via Fiftyup Club (free membership) the discount will apply for 24 months (also without lock in contract).

          https://www.fiftyupclub.com/

        • Thanks mate, was more inquiring about Dodo though haha. Cheers!

        • LOL!

        • +1

Despite the name, membership of the FiftyUpClub appears to be open to all.
The member offer for connection to Click Energy requires the applicant to be over 18.
However, RedEnergy's $75 up front discount makes a big dent in the 5% discount difference.
Ultimately it will depend on your usage as to which will be better.
RedEnergy also has the Entertainment Book-like discounts - including discounted shopping gift cards so perhaps this is still better overall.

        • Click Energy also provides you flexibility as there is no fixed term contract but they guarantee that you will get the 17% discount on total bill for 2 years.

If you go with Red Energy, you have to sign up for 2 year fixed term so if a better deal comes onto the market within the 2 year period then you can't take advantage of it.

  • What is everyone's experience with ClickEnergy and RedEnergy - seems to have bad reviews online

    • +1

So far so good with redenergy. No issues with transfer and having an australian call centre is definately a nice abnormality.

  • I am having to put power on to fix damage done by tenants, just wonder who is the best to connect with in Sydney area. I am imagining it is only short term, any suggestions thanks

  • Hi, can someone please PM me the referral link for dodo.

  • Just had a call from Energy Australia - was offered 15% for a two year term after I submitted an app to move to Red Energy. I will call back to accept/reject on Monday.

    • Was this on usage or total bill?

      • Good point - I didn't check that. Thanks.

    • To consider: usage/entire bill, rewards card usage, factor in $50 gift card savings, and usage rates in general

      • Yeah, it's not as simple as it seems. I need a couple of days to consider it.

  • Energy Australia is offering 13% (3% guaranteed discount off your market usage rates. A further 10% discount off your market usage rates when you pay your bills by the due date) for gas right now.

  • But it is a three year contract with exit fee.
