No surprises. It's Apple store after all.

Those who have held out on yesterday's DSE deals hoping to save more with Apple's BF offer + AMEX rebate must be disappointed and felt let down.

      • +1

This is probably the best you're ever going to expect from Apple store.

        It's comparable to last year.

        • +4

No last year were actual discounts, this year it's just we'll let you spend more of our money.

        • Got a better deal on Ipad Air 32gb Cellular from Bigw last week.

    • +4

The way this promo works, they've added a $75 gift card to the cart and then deducts $75 PRE-GST

So for an iPad Air 16GB, it will cost $590.50 at check out.

      $590.50 - $50 (AMEX PROMO) = $540.50

      EDIT: Also use cashrewards.com.au to get 3.5% cash back ($540.50 - $20.65 = $519.85 = Winning )

Use the $75 to buy a smart cover or case for the iPad and its a pretty awesome deal (if combined with the Amex promo)

      • +1

and if you are flying overseas this holiday season, the deal is even sweeter.

  • +3

    you beat me…

and the deal its not that good…hate gift card… I may still try to use the dick smith gift cards…bought $770 worth of gift cards and it contain 21 cards in total (most of them are $30s and $50s)

    • +3

Yeah I was going to post the deal too but didn't think it was that good of a deal

  • +10

DS deals were better. Puts AMEX card back into wallet.

  • +11

The stampede starts now…..not. How underwhelming.

  • can we use it immediately? for example to buy a ipad smart case?

    • the card comes with your item.
if you go to a retail store u will get it straight away

    • So can we use the gift card to pay for another iPad?

  • +2

have to say i agree.. gift cards are crap.. means apple gets your money either way. So no real saving. Have to say i am a bit disapointed

  • Not even for the new Retina Mini. Disappointing to say the least.

    • +1

That probably has a lot to do with the stock issues they been having with them.

      • +1

but checking the iPad Air on the Apple website it is also shipping in 5-7 business days as well. A bit shorter of a wait but still …

    • +1

they didn't include the mini last year.

  • +6

    Disappointing…

  • +1

No discount on iphone 5s either :(

    • Still would be hard to beat the 50% off 16GB iPhone 5S deal by eBay the other day: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/124085

      Received mine today. :P

      • +6

        Show off

      • +3

yeah that was a pretty sweet deal :)
Rare deal.. but sweet none the less :)

        Congrats on snapping one up

  • +2

    :/ bleh

  • +1

$75 "off" the iPads Airs is pretty good, though that's effectively what you can get from Big W with the $20 off $250 coupon and the already $50 off prices… might be hard to come by stock at Big W though (I ordered mine through them this morning, here's hoping it actually arrives via click and collect)

    • which ipad did you buy? i cant see 16gb online.. hence it wouldnt apply to that?

      • I got the 64GB Cellular with that deal… also used the cashback through starthere.com.au which gives me $32 back as well.

        • You don't get cashback if you purchase an iPad Air or an iPhone per their website 'Cashback only applicable for up to 5 units of any product per order. Cashback not available on iPhones. Cashback is not available on iPad Air.'

        • Where did you see this? Don't see any conditions on the Big W link on starthere.com.au

        • Sorry, I mis read your post. I thought you bought from starthere.com.au using the Apple Store and not Big W. The Apple Store link does not allow for cash back if buying an iPhone or an iPad Air.

  • Very average, wonder if they'll match big w and still give you the gift card? Doubtful but worth a try in store

  • So anyone know if DS gonna price match ipad air from Big W? I mean for 64GB or 128GB.

  • +4

tempted to negative the deal …

though technically you could use all the gift cards during the sale ?
buy an iPad, use the gift card to buy an accessory, use that discount to buy another accessory ? etc ?

    • +1

if u buy online.. u won't get the card until it comes in the mail.

  • +2

I actually don't think this is too bad? Sure cash off is better but let's face it, most Mac fans are going be back for more anyway

  • +3

I was going to pick up an iPad Air anyway so this is better than nothing…. $75 giftcard plus $50 Amex credit.

    • how you gonna get rid of the 75 card then?

      • +1

        ebay?

      • +1

Could buy some accessories. I can't imagine why you couldn't buy an iTunes card with the gift card either.

        • +1

accessories over priced, itunes over priced (cna get buy one get one free or at least 25% off elsewhere)

        • I asked them to give me a $25 itunes card instead of a store gift card and they did (@ Sydney CBD store)

        • So you used a $50 gift card to swap for a $25 iTunes card, is that a smart move?

        • Sorry, bit out of this thread. I bought an Apple TV which comes with a $25 Store Gift Card which I swap for $25 itunes card.

  • +2

If you need a customised Mac I think this deal is outstanding, especially combined with the Amex $50 credit offer.

  • Can I use the gift card to buy one more GB of RAM?

    • you would not be able to add the gift card (jn a store) to the purchase that gives you the card.. one would think.

  • if i buy an ipad air and use the gift card to buy a smart case immediately, how much GST refund will i get from TRS?
There will be two receipts and one partially paid by gift card.
    Thanks!

    • EDIT: Outdated information.

      • +3

and paying by gift card is no issue either

gift cards/vouchers (although goods purchased with gift cards/vouchers are eligible for a refund subject to all TRS requirements being met)

    • you would only get the refund on the iPad not the case
and on the total price, so payment method is irrelevant

      • (moved down)

    • +3

Pretty sure new trs ruling says long as all ur receipt from one shop adds up to be over $300 u can claim 10%. So don't think having cover on a seperate receipt will be a problem.

      • Ahh, good point — I just checked the Customs site and you're right. (Not sure if that particular condition was changed with the recent TRS changes.)

Spend $300 (GST inclusive) or more in the one store and retain your invoices.

        Source: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4646.asp

      • +1

        I stand corrected:
Travellers can submit more than one tax invoice to make their claim, as long as each is a valid tax invoice from the one Australian Business Number retailer and the total value of goods purchased is $300 or more (including GST).

        • +1

Just found the following from http://www.customs.gov.au/faq/TRS.asp

"To claim a refund you must meet the following conditions:

          • spend AU$300 (GST inclusive) or more in the one store and obtain a single or multiple tax invoices
          • purchase goods no more than 60 days before leaving Australia
          • have the goods with you when you leave Australia.

You can purchase several lower priced items from the one store, either at the one time or over several occasions within the 60-day period, provided the total purchase amounts to AU$300 (GST inclusive) or more. You can also buy goods within the 60-day period from several stores with the same ABN, provided the total tax invoice/s total AU$300 (GST inclusive) or more. You should note that the person making the claim must be the person who purchased the goods.".

          :)

Hang on. Purchase ipad air 16gb for $598 and receive $75 gift card.
Purchase second ipad air 16gb using $75 gift card and pay $523 and receive another $75 gift card.
Return first ipad for full refund. Would this work?

    • good thinking… should give a try in store tomorrow

      • Use AMEX card for second ipad purchase and receive $50 cash back.

        • I dont have a AMEX card, is it too late for me to apply one?

        • It's never too late apply but you won't have it in time for today's sale.

    • I returned an item that i had bought with a gift card.. they refunded me onto another gift card

    • +2

Apple has already thought of that. From the terms and conditions:

Except where the Australian Consumer Law applies, if the qualifying product is returned, your refund or exchange may be reduced by the full face value of the Apple Store Gift Card. The Apple Store Gift Card may only be used for future purchases at Apple Retail Stores and the Apple Online Store. The Apple Store Gift Card is subject to additional terms and conditions.

      • yeah… i had a $50 card i bought a case, didn't like it.. returned it they gave me a new gift card with my money back on it.

      • +7

It's a bit tough trying to outsmart Apple.

      • "may be reduced" or "will be reduced"?

        • i can assure you from experience it is WILL be

    • +1

Are you suggesting infinite $75 gift cards?
      1. purchase iPad Air for $598 and receive $75 gift card
      2. return iPad Air for $598 and keep $75 gift card
      3. goto step 1

      • here is the full code you need to excute

        scamstart:
        for win 1 = 1 to 4 start
purchase iPad Air for $598 and receive $75 gift card
return iPad Air for $598 and keep $75 gift card
        win=win+1
if win < 4 goto scamstart

print "yay I have scammed a free ipad!!!"

    • Nope won't work. From the Apple terms and conditions:

"Except where the Australian Consumer Law applies, if the qualifying product is returned, your refund or exchange may be reduced by the full face value of the Apple Store Gift Card"

      Edit: beat me to it

    • Didn't you read the T&C?

Except where the Australian Consumer Law applies, if the qualifying product is returned, your refund or exchange may be reduced by the full face value of the Apple Store Gift Card. The Apple Store Gift Card may only be used for future purchases at Apple Retail Stores and the Apple Online Store. The Apple Store Gift Card is subject to additional terms and conditions.

    • +2

Be sure you read the t&c first just in case you might not be eligible to the second $75 gift card if you use your first $75 gift card to buy another iPad air.

      • I agree you can simply return the second gift card as if it were purchased in the first transaction

    • if you can find 8 friends, who wants to buy the ipad air as well. then you can turn your 75% gift card value into cash return. as you have used the gift card to average the total cost. plus if you have the amex card, then, it will be a real saving of about 100 bucks for yourself.

  • +9

this is crap. I was expecting some price cuts. no reason to buy from apple store.

    • +1

Unless they price match Big W and still give you the gift card.

      • I don't think they will do it. They will consider the gift card a discount and say they are cheaper than Big W, and they don't have to do it.

        It is underwhelming nonetheless.

  • How long is the gift card valid for? If it is one year, use it for the next gen device.

  • +7

Don't forget to purchase from a cash back or rebate provider:

    • Starthere.com.au - 1.5% cashback (excludes iPad Mini with Retina)
    • Cash rewards - 3.5% cashback (excludes iPad mini and possibly iPad Air)
    • Velocity eStore - 4 velocity frequent flyer points per dollar (double Christmas bonus)
    • For the velocity points, how long will it show up in your account?

Cos I went through the site to ebay for those DS gift cards, but it's been 5days now, no email, no points on my account, nothing.

      • Velocity can take up to 60 days as per the standard terms and conditions

my experience is usually around 2 weeks or so

        • Would buying it from the Velocity eStore also make it eligible for the Amex rebate?

  • +3

This deal is about as compelling as Apple products have become…

  • Luckily I made the right bet on DSE gift cards which gives me 9.09% off plus price match big w and get $50 DSE gift card still works out to be cheaper than Apple store BF sale.
Edit: also paid by wish card with 5% off LOL.

    • So you can price match big w? Do they check if the closest bigw have stock or not?

      • Apple stores don't price match if thats what u r asking

        • +1

Sorry mate, I'm after the DS store, I have over 20 stupid gift cards from the recent deal.

      • Saw someone comment stating DSE price matched Big W but not sure if you still get $50 gift card on top of that.

  • Still a good deal on the ipad air (only with AMEX deal though) considering I'll be buying some accessories from apple as well.

  • $75 gift card and $50 Amex off is still a pretty good deal… That's essentially $125 off from $598. That's a good 21% off. If you don't want gift card sell it on eBay, give it to your grandmother as Christmas gift or trade it for cash with your Apple fan boy friends. Keep the Dse cards for something else later or early next year.

  • I like Apple Gift Card (not iTunes Gift Card) because it does not expire and it will be emailed to you if you order online.

Also the price is slightly cheaper (a few dollars only) because they do not charge you GST for the gift card. (I was finding the total price wrong initially then realised the GST was reduced.)

Combining with the AMEX deal, it is a pretty good deal (a bit more than 20% off 16GB iPad Air) and you can deal with Apple directly for consumer law warranty claims after the 1st yr. Also need to buy a case anyway so the gift card will be used and I guess the gift card can be used in the EPP store.

The DSE deal yesterday was nice as well. Got a 13" MBA. My DSE gift card arrived later in the day but it's okay because I at least paid with discounted Wish gift cards.

    • +1

I would gather their accessories are overpriced? If you managed to get the AMEX deal and you have some use for an Apple gift card, and you can wait the 8 weeks for the AMEX credit, it's a good deal, but that's quite a few barriers to entry.

I would stop short of equating it to 20% off. Maybe 20% off*.

Personally, I don't know how people can find 16GB adequate (actually, it's 14.6GB minus OS and reserved space). You have such a lovely screen. Wouldn't you want to take advantage of it with some high def video?

      • The problem is the 4:3 screen is not the best format for watching movies

        • It's fine. In landscape mode the resolution is more than enough for 1080p video.

  • +3

Very smart. They don't give a discount but a gift card that can only be used in store, which means you have to come back and spend more, which I wasn't planning on doing.

Also mini retina is not included.

Apple knows how maximise revenue, even during a sale.

    • +1

They have a 100 billion dollar cash in bank for no reason. People will spend money on whatever apple wants them to spend money on at whatever price :)

      • That's why they are such a brilliant company even if I don't think they are the most pro consumer out there. I don't think anyone can run a company as efficiently as they do.

  • Does anyone know how long giftcard valid for? Lifetime?

    • not sure with these ones but usually 12 months, i have seen some that are 6 months but nothing less than that.

    • +1

If they allow you to use gift cards to buy gift cards then it is lifetime but you need to take into time value of money if you are saving it for next year iPad 6.
