advantage of Apple store: extended return of opened devices, 45 days on Xmas holidays?.
Disadvantage: cc price protection won't help as they never reduce price.
I don't think Amex offer price protection. pretty much every ozbargainer will use Amex card to get extra $50 back.
Just bought the Ipad air 32gb wifi for $691.50 from the Sydney apple store.. They refused to price match.. Nonetheless still happy as I paid using Amex for the $50 cash back so still lower than buying from BigW for $668.
Well then i guess Apple is lucky Amex offered an actual discount :)
Yeah i bought a 64GB wifi model for 791.50 and also asked them to price match, they told me i could price match but i wouldn't get the $75 gift card. I obviously went with the gift card (and the $50 amex promo)

Not really a great price given you can walk into some retailers and bargain them to take $50 off an iPad…etc.
Was waiting for this sale and got disapointed. So I ended up buying refurbished Macbook Pro for $800 less than brand new price. Travelling overseas next month will then put back $250 back in my pocket. Just need to find a cheap Apple Protection Plan on eBay and my Mac is good to go for the next 4 years!

If you can get a mate to buy the giftcard off you then it would be the same as cash back.
The $75 gift card isn't that bad for me, given it's a greater discount than I got from Target ($50 off) - it means I can get an authentic Smart Cover (which I'm already going to purchase) with $25 to spare on my family's iPads…

Don't act surprised, after all it's Apple - high profile propaganda is their strong point :-) How else would they still be able to charge the prices they do for products that are at best only marginally better than those of the competition?

I think you are giving Apple too much credit! Their products, software and ecosystem has not moved forward since Jobs died. Competitors products are not slowing down and have long surpassed Apple I feel. Apple are trading on name and goodwill only, which can only get you so far…

Hmmmm, seems like there's two options.
Buy iPad Air 16gb Wifi for $598, and get $75 gift card plus $50 Amex rebate = $548 plus $75 gift card
Wait till tomorrow, and price match BigW at $568 and still get $50 Amex rebate = $518
I think given I will most likely purchase a smartcase and screen protector, I could actually put the gift card to use. Am I missing anything?

Funnily enough, the price checking out online was also $590.50, and not $598 just like the other person who bought instore below.

Actually the black friday promo works in an odd way such that the actual iPad price using option 1 is $590.50 so the Big W price match option only nets you a paltry $22.50 cash vs $75 gift card.
Nothing spectacular there. Glad I bought the 16gb mini at Apple store for $468 price match and claimed the GST back on TRS.

I just bought the iPad 16gb wifi only from Garden City Apple Store in Perth. I spoke to the manager and he said that today's price is fixed with the gift card, and tomorrow he can price match but no gift card. It worked out to be $30 extra (if not price matched to big w 568) but I got $75 gift card which I could use to buy iTunes gift card. It could get better if you use Amex ($50 cash back) and if you claim GST (within 60 days). The total I paid was $590.50 (not $598) and the manager wasn't sure why but that was the price came up.
A friend came to get an ipad with me, so I ended up getting mine for $515.50 as I used his gift card. Amex $50 cash back makes it to $465.50. Good friend!
Gone into the Apple store in Doncaster. Not convinced enough to join my wife as an apple user even with gift card and AMEX cash back. I think I will stick with Android.

Even though it's FAQ page specifically state gift cards can be applied at checkout,
Then they're even smarter than I gave them credit for (which was already a lot).
That means you can't even use it to buy accessories with your new ipad. It means you have to go back.
