You're highly unlikely to get a job with just 150 hours and online only teaching with no practical experience. A Cambridge CELTA is good if you're serious.

I disagree, I got a job overseas teaching English in Italy with a similar qualification. :)

Agreed. CELTA is the most recognised around the world, and most considered legitimate (by legitimate schools) for English teaching. For conversational schools, well, any monkey can do that! Some schools overseas just require you to have had X number of contact hours in your course. Other more dodgy one just require that English be your first (or sometimes second) language.

If you want to teach ESL in Australia, you'll want something legitimate like a CELTA. But, it's your $$$.

Many foreign countries only require you to have completed a university degree (in any field) and be from an English (as a first language) speaking country - TEFL or CELTA are just icing on the cake and are great (especially CELTA) if you want to try and get into college or university teaching.

I got a job teaching in Japan a few years ago with just my uni degree.

    • Oh I miss my time at Nova… Fun times…

Yeah I was an "English conversation instructor" in Japan with a company called Nova. They have since gone belly up and been revived.

I think JETS is still going strong in Japan… That's where you volunteer as an English teacher or a teacher's aid in high schools.

I'm not sure if all my info is still up to date. It's been almost 10 years since I did this stuff.

      • I've been thinking of doing JETS (been looking into it recently), it really does look like a nice program. Seems like an awesome experience as well.

        • The program can be difficult to get in. Like I said I haven't looked into this stuff for 10 years now. So things might be different. If you can get in then go for it. You won't regret it.

Old article, but I believe it is still accurate:

FWIW people I know who have taught overseas say CELTA.

  • Hmm… This seems like a really good deal if it is normally $463. I'm keen as I've taught English overseas before but couldn't do anything official with the certificate. Is this really not a 'high enough' qualification? For what parts of the world?
