Top spec of almost every option for Alienware 17.3" laptop - better spec than the $5,999 option

Would I pay $3.5K for a laptop - Nope
But if you specifically wanted an Alienware or similar specced lappie then this is cheap for it and qualifies as a bargain in that regard

  • Lol must be a pricing error. Seems like 3499 and 5999 is swapped

      1.5TB RAID 0 (2x750GB 7200RPM) + 80GB mSATA SSD Caching UMMM

For this price i would be looking at a 960GB SSD Minimum!

  • +5

The power of this baby could almost get this operating as we know it.

    • Push it 1cm/s?

      • Yea, probably.

    • +3

a Laptop Mobile GTX 780M give the performance of a Desktop HD7870 or GTX660
SO its as good as last years mid range products! NOTHING SPECIAL!!!

If you want a real gaming computer a PC is always better and as for portable gaming i don't see the battery lasting very long with overclocked parts.

  • Difference of $3,499 and $5,999:-

    $3,499 has:-
    1.5TB RAID 0 (2x750GB 7200RPM) + 80GB mSATA SSD Caching
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 780M with 4GB GDDR5

    $5,999 has:-
    750GB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s + 80GB mSATA SSD Caching
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 770M with 3GB GDDR5

    SATA 6Gb/s?

    • That just means that it's third generation SATA. The other laptop would have it too.

    • id go the GTX 780 any day over 770
      http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark…

Id get it if i didnt have an alienware already and if I had a spare 3.5k

      • Equivalent to a Desktop HD7870 or GTX660

SLOWER then Factory Overclocked - HD7870 or GTX660

All HD7870 or GTX660 are factory overclocked products! LOL

    • Agreed it says saving of $705 - but then the $5999 model has lower specs
Either way it is a saving

Yeesh. For 6 grand they could at least throw in a bigger SSD

Pricing and configs are all over the place, esp. the GPUs

I dunno who'd pay for one of these.
However my friend did have a 15" Alienware I think, the fans on it sounds as loud as my vacuum cleaner! You can easily hear it from 10m away!

the fans on it sounds as loud as my vacuum cleaner!

That's probably the turbo boost for the overclocking…

For this price you could get both a great gaming desktop PC (with graphics card far superior to the 780M, which is basically equivalent to a desktop 670) and a great laptop that actually excels at being a laptop (unlike this bulky, heavy, hot, loud monstrosity).

    • This is spot on. This Advice is great!

But the 780M is more like a GTX660, HD7870 in latest games like Battlefield 4 ext. But most Desktop GTX660's and HD7870's are factory overclocked and blow the 780M away!

      • +1

780M has a fair bit of headroom for overclocking too, like most Kepler cards; I'd place a moderately overclocked 780M on par with a stock 670. :)

        • Lets just let the number 1 hardware site on earth tell us its performance , anandtech -
          http://www.anandtech.com/show/7287/analyzing-the-price-of-mo…

"The fastest mobile GPU we have right now, the GeForce GTX 780M, ends up delivering performance that falls roughly half way between the GTX 660 and GTX 760, or if we look at the Digital Storm system Dustin tested, it offers 60-70% of the performance of that desktop"

        • +1

performance that falls roughly half way between the GTX 660 and GTX 760

Which means it's better than the 660 you're comparing it to! :P

I'd still put it closer to a stock 670, particularly if you start overclocking the 780M.

The 780M is nearly physically identical to a 680, just with downclocked core and memory speeds: http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=1242&gid2=576&c…

        • you cant buy STOCK 660's .. all are massive factory overclocked cards both in RAM and GPU core Mhz..

  • +6

So… how's the heat management? Last Alienware I touched was absolutely blistering to use when we tried to run Crysis on full (this was years ago when Crysis was the go-to game for online penis size comparison).

    • +1

It would be like putting boiling water into a hot water bottle then sitting it on your lap when gaming at 100% load.

  • +17

I feel silly putting a deposit on my 1st house instead of this buying this baby.

  • +5

Not a bargain for me, I won't neg but I feel this is not good value.

This thing would be heavy. Like, really heavy. And loud, and probably hot. Ok, fair enough you may think, as it has nice specs.

Yes, it does, but these are mobile specs. It will be fast for sure, but you can achieve the same result (or better) in a desktop for around half the price.

What is the point of it being "portable" when it's like 3kg and 17". Anyone with a 17" heavy laptop knows how much of a pain in the ass they are to lug around anywhere. You may as well leave it at home and use a tower for gaming, and use the leftover cash for a fast, lightweight laptop for your travelling needs.

Just my 2 cents. Gaming laptops in general aren't bargains to me. You'll probably neg me but that's fine :)

    • +2

Some nice laptops out there that are in the $700 price range 15", 2.4kg and can play games with 28nm GTX650m, GTX660m GDDR5 .. much more respectable value for money portable gaming can be had.

    • Agree completely with your points which is why I wouldn't buy one
However people do and if you wanted one then the current offer is a 'bargain' :)
