ING Direct - 5% Cashback on PayWave for Existing Members (req. New Referral Signup)

2070

Woohoo, it's back!

Tell a friend about Orange Everyday before 31 January 2014, and you could both get 5% cash back. That's for 6 months on payWave purchases under $100, in Australia.

Time to put the good word out to your friends, colleagues, or fellow OzBargainers that don't yet have an account!

Edit: Please use this wiki page to put in your referral code rather than requesting / leaving them in the comments.

  • I don't want to ask a silly question, but as an existing customer, where do I find my referral code? I can't find it in the internet banking system, and no emails from ING Direct.

  • New customers…you don't need a referral code to get the deal…

    http://www.ingdirect.com.au/everyday/orangeeveryday.htm?pid=…

    so apply away….!!!!

    • Oh….you need to deposit $2k into the account every month…so no deal for me…I like my money sitting in the Big 4 banks…

      • Then you should become a new ING customer again :-P

      • $500 in each?

      • No you don't need to deposit $2k. This is for the existing customers to receive 2% cashback after 6 months.

  • Long time reader, 1st time poster - I highly recommend ING Direct, getting 5% back is better than interest on savings accounts these days, so really helps over time. As long as you buy only what you actually need lol.

  • Ok, getting one of these.

Bah, befoul you ozbargainers! (and thank you)

  • +4

just got off the phone to ING… this referral program is only for a select few, so those of you with referral codes should count yourself lucky

    • Maybe only the ones that didn't abuse the privilege? I got my code and I have been a fair recipient of the cashback promo.

  • as a pre-existing customer, I closed all my ING accounts.. and did not get the referal

is there any way to get it? or I should just open a new account and hope they won't detect it?

    • Sure, close & reopen if you have no code and your 6 months are nigh. Maybe use somebody's referral code and help a brother.

    • as a pre-existing customer, I closed all my ING accounts.. and did not get the referal

      well that's your fault

is there any way to get it?

i think they are on to people re-opening new accounts to get the 5% rebate. all you will get is 2%

      • Doing nothing will get you 2%, so there's no harm in trying (if you didn't get your referral code and your rebate has dropped to 2%)

@lansome - you can have my referral code if you like :-P

  • wife and I are not ING customers this is awesome

    • +2

Why don't open one and help us ozbargainer by using one of our codes.

  • how come i didnt receive the email??

  • +3

Just spoke to them as I haven't received the friend code yet either. It seems that they aren't sending out a friend code to all existing members. Only a certain few that fill some sort of 'criteria'.

I find this very disappointing as I was singing their praise for the whole 6 months and beyond, and now only a few are getting a second round.

    • Perhaps you cost them too much money as a customer(in the form of paywave cashbacks), so they intentionally excluded you?

  • Still haven't got an email yet. :( People in my family that I referred before all got one.

  • -5

Looks dodgy. I have to agree that I have read the terms and conditions yet there is no link to them.

  • haven't got any email from ING :(

  • No email received from ING either and I checked SPAM folders

  • so where is my friend code?

    • +1

ing direct have analysed your spending habits and determined that you have no friends :)

  • no code from ING for me 2…

    • Probably just wait a bit more?

  • Anyone successfully referred a new customer and received an email saying "you can start enjoying 5% cash back again" from ING?

    I got nothing so far…

    • +1

You won't get anything until your "friend" has deposited into the account, which would not have been possible for most as the deal was only posted on Thursday.

  • Just want to say thanks to the kind friend out there who has used my ref code! Cheers!

  • +1

I also want to say thanks to the OzBargainer here who kindly used my code.
I received an email from ING today that I have 5% back now :) Thank you!

    • Good stuff. Lucky you! It is still hurting me everytime I pay pass my card and see no rebate accompanied :(

      • Yes, 5% back certainly helps a lot! I remembered the days when the rebate was gone. I'm very lucky this time and someone kindly helped me out so I can continue enjoying the rebate.
I'll keep this in mind and will help out others here if there is a chance in the future.

    • remove it from the wiki page if it has been used

      • Yes, I will. Sorry I forgot that.

  • Thanks to the person who used my code!

  • Thanks to an ozbargainer who used my code

  • +1

Don't know if anyone kindly used my code, because I haven't received any notification from ING yet. However my rebate magically changed to 5% today, so I assume there must be an ozbargainer applied using my referrer code (I only posted here on the wiki page). Really appreciate it, and happy new year to all OZB fellows!

    • Lucky you. I still haven't got my ING email yet with my code. But my 6 month offer period doesn't expire until mid-late January. If wonder if they only email this out closer to the expiry date?

      • We got three ING debit cards in the family, all out of the promotion period and sit on 2% rate, but only me received the referrer code. I reckon that's because I use it almost everyday, so it's still a targeted promotion.

    • +1

yeah, mine jumped to 5% and then a day or two later i got the email. it says in the email the 6 months starts from the date of the email.

  • i received a code (in the wiki if anyone looking to sign up - my gratitude in advance)
i use ING as my daily transaction account, using it normally, not breaking up big purchases etc

my sister didnt receive a code, but she stopped using her account after 5% disc was up

so not sure on the criteria for this promo, but happy to have been selected :D

    • good tip. I will go and use mine a couple of times and see if it works.

  • Is this a targeted promotion? I have ING account and would like to get the code to refer, to take 5% advantage…
    Any idea?

    • You'll need to get the code off the ING email. I'm still waiting for mine to be sent to me.

  • +1

I'm wanting to sign up, so first to pm is the weiner. Spreading the love :)

    edit: make that first 2

    • PM Sent

      • Pm sent also! Hope im not too late!

        • You're a champion s_agno3. I owe you one.

    • All done!

  • I have an ing account. I havnt received any code or email for this promotion. Is there a way to get ing to include me or send me a code to refer a friend?
What options do i have? They have revered me to 2% cash back. Help me please.

    • Gday Vikme,

Have a look through the comments. I think from what others have said it may be a targeted promotion. Therefore if you havent received the email with your personalised referral code you might be out of luck sorry :(

In case you havent done so yet, check your junkmail. It might be there.

      • Thanx andyman,

        Checked junkmail, nothing :-(
Might need to wait for another promotion or hack. Cheers.

    • lostboi stated that he had continued to use his after the 5% was terminated, and he got the offer. Worth a try!

  • +1

I would love to know the exact cut-off for the 6 months. My account opened 24 June. 1st deposit 25 June, 1st purchase/cashback 10 July, and I assumed that the 5% would end 25 December and so I started to use my gift vouchers. But then, when I tried to use ING Paywave again to see if it helped me to get an email offer+code, I found that I am still getting the 5% cashback. Yep - not 2%, but 5%. e.g. 2 January $62.38, cashback $3.12!

    • peck it should be 6 months from the date you took up the offer. we all have different offers . it depends on the terms and if you are an existing customer or new. you are best sending a secure message to ing or calling them to find out the exact date you 5% rebate ends.

    • I signed up mid-May and my 5% has only just expired in the last couple of days. So I managed around 7.5 months!

Hoping to get the email now. Otherwise some lucky punter will get their code used when I sign up for my wife.

      • You can continue to get the 5% for you and the Mrs if you start up a joint account with your wife as the primary customer through the sign up process. This is what my wife and I did 6 months ago, joined up our accounts and got the 5% for another 6 months. Hope that makes sense!?

      • i have 2 everyday orange cards and both used to get the 5% rebate. you could use one and your wife the other. they can both be linked together or separately (select during sign up)

    • I also managed to get about 7.5 months like yourself. Signed up mid-May and the 5% cashback expired 3 Jan. I'm still waiting to receive an e-mail with the code otherwise I'd be devastated :(

  • i received an email today advising changes in the t&cs (effective 12 mar 2014), http://ingdirect.com.au/Oechanges/

    one point of interest is:

"Changes to 'Bonuses, credits or rebates' (page 14)
We have added the following sentence at the end of this section:
Should you access any bonuses, credits or rebates in a manner that, in our opinion, is not satisfactory or in line with the intent of the offer we may place a stop or freeze on your account. We may also refuse to honour the bonus, credit or rebate or reclaim any benefit provided to you".

    • Interesting! When the 5% stops (beyond the 6 months) , I had better 'zero-ise' the account in case they wake up and try to claw back.

    • I haven't read it carefully enough, but does anyone else find this disturbing?

      Begin quote:
Changes to 'No everyday fees, no worries' (page 32)
      • We have changed the title of this section to "Fees explained".
      • We have changed the 'Fees' section by removing the words:
"They say there's no such thing as a free lunch, but at least you don't have to pay ING DIRECT for everyday transactions on your Orange Everyday.
While everyday transactions do not have a fee, due to the costs we incur, there are times when we need to charge (and you must pay) a fee for not so everyday transactions"
      End quote.

  • I closed all of ING a/cs a while ago (forgot how long, but definitely more than 6 months or so), just wondering if I am still deemed as a new customer if I am open a new a/c with ING? Many thanks…

    • I think you can find that there was a user here by the name of pisslur who managed to open multiple accounts.

      • Thanks t25 !

  • Thanks the wiki looks more helpful !

  • Finally received my referral code :)

  • Finally received my code today, but already created a new account for wife using a code from the wiki page. So whoever is thinking of opening a joint account or account in spouse's name, be patient. Or use a code from the wiki if you're impatient. Hopefully somebody returns me the favor and does the same to you

  • Mine also only arrived just after 12pm AEDT today. I along with a number of others were very disappointed in December when some people got codes and we didn't.

  • got the code today, wierdly enough, my initial account did not receive the code.

  • Added my code to the Wiki page today! Up for use if anyone is still after a code :)

  • Added my code to the Wiki page today. Thank you to the person who uses it!

anyone else surrounded by family members and friends who are allergic to credit cards/ debit cards?

Brother thinks you need a Mac to do internet banking, sister clings onto her Dollarmite account. I literally have to face palm my way through family dinner.

    • Brother thinks you need a Mac to do internet banking

well, i'd prefer a mac over a windows machine. a linux machine would be my first preference.

    • You were born into the wrong family by mistake. :(

  • Added my code to the Wiki page on 10/01/2014 and still not used. I hope someone uses it soon as it expires om 31/01/2014.

  • +1

Thanks to the person who has used my code (according to the wiki). However ING hasnt confirmed the new account. Any ideas how long they get back to you once it has been confirmed?

    • +1

I think some money has to be deposited too into the account (before 31st) after opening for the cashback to be activated? No?

      • yeah it does. i guess ill just wait out and see if i get an extension.

        • The fine print says "2 weeks" after they deposit it. My friend confirmed a deposit and 6 days later I got the email so I would suspect 6 days is more typical.

        • so once people activated and deposited money to their ING a/c, they can get 5% rebate with their PayWave credit purchase straight away?

        • +1

you can check your "participating offers" section of the online banking and it will tell you any rebates your cards are getting

        • -1

It looks like if someone does not use our codes before the end of the day then the money won't clear into their account before the 31st so we won't get the extension. Oh well, it has been good while it lasted, 2% is still better than nothing I suppose.

        • thanks for that mattgal, if it says '5% rebate' and 'rewarded' in the 'participating offers', does that mean it is active (or still active)? I'm so confused, I called ING up and they couldn't tell me if someone had used my referral or if it was ongoing.

        • that means you are currently getting the 5% rebate for the card

        • Thanks - checked. I have the 5% rebate !!! Yeahhhhhhh Happy New Year !!!!!!! : )

But the 5% rebate does not come through yet for my credit PayWave purchases yesterday and a day before….not sure how long they gonna credit back to my account…..

        • oh I just checked my online banking, the 5% rebate just came through….on my credit purchases that I made 1-2 days before ~!!! ho ho ho

        • thanks again, I emailed them and they said my rebate finishes on March 1st which is strange as I thought it finished 2 months ago. However, they can't tell me if anyone has used the referral.

    • +1

      Hi t25

Did you get the 5% rebate? I was the person who used your code ! Thanks for that~ : )

      • Many thanks for using my code

I haven't received anything from ing to confirm the extension of my 5% promo. I guess I'll find out in the next couple of days

  • stupid stupid stupid…my friend opened the account, but it got activated today…so even if he transfers it today, no dice for me I guess as it won't hit his account before Monday :(

    • Ok, I transferred some money from my ING to friend's ING…so it'll reach in about 12 hours…so close, let's see

      • I would stay positive - from all the comments about ING's customer service, it sounds like they are eager to please both new and existing customers.

Give it a couple days, if you don't end up getting the 5% re-applied give them a call and see if they can be lenient since it was still activated before the due date and technically you made a transfer/deposit that was initiated within the stipulated promotion end date. Can't hurt to ask! Good luck.

  • Finally got my referral cashback sorted today (I hope - still yet to test it). Took multiple phone calls from me & the person I referred for it to be activated. Call centre operators are lovely, but it shouldn't be this hard.

  • +2

I was one of the helpers/referrers and am loving this deal, only wish I had not taken a hiatus from ozbargain all last year as I've only just jumped on the 5% gravy-train!

    tl;dr

I thought I'd share my experiences. I haven't seen anyone mention BPOINT and curious if anyone has tried paying a bill, any bill with paypass at a bpoint retailer location (i.e. not aust-post) and succeeded?

    Cheers guys!

    ……..

I have NOT cancelled all my direct debits but I am still paying bills in person with PayPass where possible to get the discount… some tips on paying bills:

    • Even if AustPost won't allow you to pay with paypass, or if the fees are too high for your liking, try in-store (e.g. optus bills, see below).
    • Try searching for a bpoint retailer (see notes below) or check your local Commonwealth Bank branch:
      https://www.bpoint.com.au/bpoint/consumer/
    • Follow other advice given on purchases over $100 - don't let the person behind the counter stop you - just ask them nicely to pay the total amount with separate cards because your card has a $99 limit (damn banks!). Given them the example of paying half the amount on card and the other half with cash. If they're savvy, give ING some free advertising and tell them about why you're doing it - it has got me across the line on a couple of occasions once they realise you're just trying to save some money and it doesn't cost them anything. In fact I think I've given ING some new customers!

    Specific billers:

    • Optus bills: (Success)!
These get charged a fee of $1.30 at Aust Post per bill, which makes smaller bills not worth it… BUT you can pay in-store! I rang around and found an Optus STORE that had PayPass facilities, I was able to pay my bills in person at the Yes Optus store (Brisbane, Windsor on Newmarket rd) using paypass and so I got the discount on all bar one of the bills. Note that they will still charge a credit card fee of 0.6% but this is peanuts compared to the 5% you will get back. Also note that this worked on "normal" blue&yellow optus bills but did not work on my cable internet as I had a really old account (account number starts with a 3, bill looks completely different to the current ones and doesn't have a barcode or the normal pay-in-person, must be direct-debited or paid over phone).

    • QLD Urban Utility (water) bills: (Fail)
If anyone has found somewhere in Brisbane that will accept PayPass, please let me know! Can't do it at Aust Post due to only allowing eftpos/cash. However, if you read the fine print, these bills appear to be payable with credit at BPOINT outlets (www.bpoint.com.au as opposed to BPay or PostPay or whatever, bpoint is a separate way to pay certain bills and is a Commonwealth Bank initiative) but there are only limited places and the ones close to me in Brisbane are all ancient tiny little newsagents who don't have contactless terminals. I rang a few of them but gave up after I noticed the trend. But - don't lose hope - there is a list of places that do BPOINT payments on their website and I am hopeful that somewhere around Australia one of you can find one that accept PayPass to try it out! Apparently CommBank is accepting payments at the bank in VIC, dunno if they'll have a contactless terminal installed at any branches?
Search for a store here: https://service.commbank.com.au/xpos/bpoint/consumer/searchS…
(Helpful tip if searching for a bpoint outlet with the above link - their search engine sucks and is not presented very well. Leave suburb & postcode blank and ONLY select your state then click search)

    • (Brisbane City Council) Rates bills: (Fail)
:( No go, these do not have the bpoint logo or text - only a very limited number of bills can be 'bpointed', see their list here:
      https://service.commbank.com.au/xpos/bpoint/consumer/which-b…
I would be interested to see if anyone finds a both a biller that allows bpoint payments, as well as a store/branch that has PayPass that allows bpoint payments.
You can pay in person at a council centre but I rang ahead and I was told that none of them in Brisbane had paypass - YMMV.

    • Origin Electricity/Gas: TBD
I am yet to get my quarterly bills but given the text of the last bill, it clearly states I can pay by credit card at Aust-Post and other ozbargainers in other threads have indicated they were successful in splitting their bills into payments of sub-$100.

    • Other bills: Success!
Depending on the bill and the wording, but if it says you can pay by credit at Aust Post and they have a reasonable % fee, then you should be golden. I am just waiting on my next quarterly bills/statement for things like gas & power so I can pay them in person. Note that even if you leave bills on direct debit, usually you can pay in person as long as it is a few days before the due date and not cop any penalty processing fees, but YMMV, I have not verified this (yet) and it will depend on the biller, check your terms & conditions & fee schedules.

    HTH!
