Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II Lens for $98 Pickup from CAMERA HOUSE (Top Ryde City, NSW)

170

Just bought this Canon 50mm f1.8 lens without any bargaining from Camera House, Top Ryde City.

This price is even lower than some grey imports. More importantly, this lens comes with 2 years local warranty from Camera House or Canon Australia.

Good entry level prime lens for portrait shooting. May ring and ask your local Camera House store for actual price and stock level (Top Ryde store's got plenty of them).

Good luck.

  • Wow, great price!

    Personally, I'd pay the extra $200 and get the 50mm F1.4 USM…
The difference in picture quality for indoor shooting is well worth it…

But if you can't afford it, the 1.8 is quite good…

    • 50mm f1.4 is a beast, but personally I don't feel much excitement for portrait shooting, so I won't invest that much.

Is jva a full frame version of jv?

        • A Qld version of jv… ay?

      • I don't feel much excitement for portrait shooting

we hardly take it off our camera…

        • I can hardly shoot landscape via 50mm, hope you may understand.

        • we hardly take it off our camera…

          On my second camera.

Where can you get Canon 50mm 1.4 for $298?

      • +1

You know… in his dreams :)

    • I find the 1.4 a bit soft till 2.8. If you want sharp images, you need to start from 2.8. The USM and better build quality is well worth the extra cash.

  • +1

Decent lens, although AF hunting can be a problem on cheaper bodies.

    • I have the lens, AF hunting is indeed a bit slow and noisy on it - but still doesn't take away from an amazing lens, especially for the price.

  • I dare say this i no longer the go to lens. The 40mm 2.8 pancake lens is now the lens constantly connected to my Canon.

    • Can you elaborate? I've heard the 35mm is the more versatile prime lens for crop sensors, a downside being the weight.

      • Pancake is smaller to carry around. Not much difference optically 40 vs 35mm

        • What he said. It's so much smaller and lighter that it makes a huge difference.

      • I agree, the 35mm f/2 IS is absolutely superb, bought it a couple of months ago and couldn't stop using it.

  • Available online?

    • +1

Not online, you have to ask your local store.

Can you guys recommend a good site to know more about lenses. Which one for portrait and indoor low light shooting? Thanks

    • google, did you use it?

      • He asked for help, if you have nothing helpful to say, don't say anything.

For low light you're going to want as lower aperture as possible. As for portrait, a prime lens would be fine such as this one, but try and get the 1.4 if you have the money.

        • -2

If you need help from pro, obviously he wont get anything from here based on your mis info advice. More luck from photography forums is what I'm suggesting.
Also, you'd want faster (higher) aperture as possible, not lower.

        • -2

also if you know nothing about photography, better not say anything instead giving wrong info

        • As is usually confusing, the lower the aperture value, the wider it is.

          F1.4 is wider than f4.5

        • Correct. The notation is actually e.g. f/1.4 meaning that the aperture size is the focal length divided by 1.4. So the smaller the denominator, the wider the aperture.

        • To be clear, the larger the aperture the faster the lens. The higher the f number the smaller the aperture.

        • Larger aperture = Faster light intake = Faster lens = photos w/ less noise @ low ISO settings.

        • no mcp2kpro is right. there is no one site that can give you all the information you need. i use google and youtube and ive learnt so much. ive read alot of articles on dpreview but theyre all linked from google searches anyways. even if you search within dpreview, the results will not be as good as from google. most of my questions are answered on flickr which is also linked from google. wikipedia will give you basic terminologies etc.

@amsaini15 do you want to shoot portrait and indoor low light together? have you considered a flash (no, im not talking about the popup flash on dslrs)?

      • Too many sites and too much info come up. Better to know from Pros for reliable, easier to understand source.

        • What I'm saying you'd have more luck searching on google (which will then take you to some photography forums with lots of people (with proper knowledge). On here you will more likely getting wrong info from cheap bargain hunters. Pro wont be looking at this lens, hens answering your question

        • sounds to me youre to lazy to find the answer yourself. pros aint going to be sitting in front of a computer answering your questions, they will be out there shooting. even if they can answer your questions, it doesnt necessarily mean they will be right. there is no one way of shooting. it might be right for them but not for you. here is a simple question "what is the best focal range for portraits?", you can have 100 pros answer that question and youll prob get 20 different answers. in the end it all comes down to what you like.

btw what do you consider as a pro photographer?

I dont personally think this is a deal, its a good price especially for the lens you get, but i paid $90 for this lens over a year ago…

    • +3

just because u paid $90 over a year ago doesn't mean this is not a deal. Have a quick look and you see it is over $120 at most local shops. Would you please then point out where can we get this for $90?

      • I'm just saying its been cheaper before, and this is a fairly common price. Calm down mate.

        • dude, I'm just asking can you please point out where is this common price so I can go get one. Nobody trying to jump you

  • I bought the exact same lens from eBay, it is packaged in authentic Canon box. But the color scheme of the box is black/grey color instead of OP's red/white/black, does this mean anything?

    • Never seen that before. Could be a fake or refurbished.

    • +1

Could be their new style packaging…. They have been switching box style recently

      • Did you buy from OS? Maybe grey stock?

        • black and grey is the newer packaging, i can confirm

        • Saw that at a Camera House store. Looks cheap.

        • I think it looks tacky too, and .. well black and grey don't really catch my eye.
As long as whats in the box is good :P packaging shouldn't matter :D

        • Rep,

Price still available at Parramatta store?

        • I'm sorry, but Parramatta is not run by the same owner, i can't be sure
As far as i know Top Ryde is still running this price

  • -4

i use nikon and bought a 50/1.4g for usd349.99 recently.

    • +3

      Hows that relevant?

      • +2

        As relevant as…

I have a chook that lays eggs.

    • OT…. but tell me where! I need a new 50…. done idiot that I lent my 1.8D had stripped the focus gears and I have terrible play in it now

  • +1
