Website price also listed as $389, not $369

    • Sorry guys. It was a typo and the correct price is $389. Link is fixed.

  • Just a quick question; What version USB?

    • +1

      specs say usb 2.0 :(

    • No USB 3.0.

Only the newer generation NUC (Haswell era) have USB 3.0.

      • Thanks for updating. Yes correct only the Haswell version has USB3.0. However the Haswell i3 is a lot higher in price starting at $345 on staticice with NO SSD, Ram or wifi module which would add around $200+ to the price

  • +4

I would have been interested if it was the Ethernet model.

  • Whats the wattage of the PSU (or does it us an ext. AC adp.)?

    • It has a 65 watt external ac adapter "brick". However, you will need to supply your own cable.

Unless of course the shop decides to include one free for you…

      • Too low…think I'll give this a pass & go back to plan B: ITX for upgradability.

        • NUC is a lot smaller than ITX — small enough to fit on your palm. The form factor makes it possible for you to hide it behind your TV or monitor using VESA mount.. Can't do that with ITX.

It was never designed to take upgrades anyway…

        • Yeah, but I wanted something for a HTPC & needed flexibility of adding a GFX card.

        • +1

This will do everything a HTPC needs to do. If you want to play games locally it isn't so great, but that is why I'm hanging out for this:

Look interesting. So this is essentially RDP that supports DX & OGL with your connecting client PC as a thin client?

        • +1

Yeah it is expected to work pretty much the same as nvidia's shield. SteamOS is being released into beta Right Now so I'm hoping streaming is wrapped up in that.

      • +2

Yes cable is included. Wouldn't want you to get a machine with no power cable to use it :)

    The BOXDC3217BY :-
What does "Get FREE 4G Ram & Intel Wireless for NUC!" mean? There's nothing in the listing details that mentions that.

Can a standard 2.5" HDD work? Or does it need to be SSD?

    • NUC has a mSATA slot - so no, 2.5" HDD's won't work, except in an external enclosure.

  • Something to compare it to:

    http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&p…

That has USB3, and Ethernet. You loose thunderbold and it will cost more once you add SSD and memory, but still a good alternative.

    • +1

so much for a bloody USB 3.0……. :-(

    • Yes. All about your requirements. Horses for courses. Tradeoffs, tradeoffs, tradeoffs…

    • +1

Not if you want small quiet low power and thunderbolt.

    • and much larger, etc

  • +1

    Anyone interested in Ethernet they have this model here;
    http://www.saveonit.com.au/products/productdetails/65116021

Over $120 more for Ethernet! Plus no wifi included in this bundle.

Not sure why the red is $120 more than the black?

    • +3

      Because it goes faster!

    • At first the red models were more (for thunderbolt), but it isn't popular at all. Now these models have been replaced and I expect there is a lot of the red stock to clear and not much black.

    • +2

The Red version we did a bulk buy which allowed us offer the saving on this deal. Normally the cost between the two is similar as one has Thunderbolt and the other has Ethernet.

To support the Ozbargain users, we will throw in the Wireless module if ordered during the promotion period. Just put Ozbargain in the comment and we will throw it in free!

  • It's a great deal if your after a media centre capable of playing 1080p files with decent sound.

Unit is about $220 with CPU soldered
    + $170 for the mini PCI-E SSD
    + $60 for the So-Dimm memory

    Cons;

No good for larger games or 3D media.

    No Ethernet

    No USB 3.0

  • How would this handle minecraft? I'm thinking of something for my nieces and nephews in a LAN setup (yes I'm aware it is wifi only).

    The BOXDC3217BY :-
"Get FREE 4G Ram & Intel Wireless for NUC!"

Delivery for me is $14.30, bringing the total to $253.40.

If you get free RAM and Wireless for this, you are effectively paying $135.6 for the mSata SSD. If you don't need 120GB of space, it would be cheaper to get this one and buy a smaller capacity SSD to save cost, no?

    • Yes if you don't need the SSD you can order the other special that is on the website which is the NUC with free 4G ram and wifi module. It' won't appear in the cart but is automatically included.

        • Hi Rep,
What brand is the laptop RAM? Kingston?

Also what connector does the SSD utilise? mSATA or mPCI-e?

        • On checking Intel website it's mSATA. The ram installed is Kingmax.

No SSD, no memory, no Wifi/Bluetooth. Hardly competitive.

  • Is it good for XBMC?

    • Yes, will work perfectly. I am running the Brix version of this with Linux and XBMC/Steam.
