You better check what is covered and how much, excesses that may be applicable per claim etc. Remember that you will get complimentary travel insurance from most major bank issued credit cards if you pay by credit card :)

Yeah I checked, I usually use TID or 1cover and have claimed in the past with one cover so all good on that front.
But yes I agree always ensure it meets your individual requirements.

In regards to CC coverage ive found they have to many restrictions and heard quite a few bad stories when friends thought they were covered but weren't.

    • Tip for those after domestic Travel insurance - ANZ's 'extras package' account includes domestic travel insurance and rental car excess cover among a bunch of other stuff for $18 a month, and you can change back and forth between extras package and Access (standard chequing) as often as you like (if the other benefits dont do anything for you

    Cowiie, you are right.

The above policy covers you for a maximum of 21 days. I was thinking of buying it and then saw that it will not cover my trip for 50 days. Even the complimentary credit card insurances offered by Zurich.com.au have high excesses which cannot be waived.

So in my situation I will have to go for a standalone travel insurance even though I have bought my air tickets from Citibank Signature Credit Card.

So everyone please read the fine print and decide if it will suit your situation before jumping in to buy.

    • Yeah if doing a trip over 21 days this may not suit some people.
Unfortunately I never go away for more than that.
I was looking at a single trip coverage for a 2 week trip coming up next week at that was going to be $140 for one person, so this deal was a clear winner and now wife and I will be covered for 12 months.

      • Mat777, it is pretty good to see that it covers you in your situation. So this policy maybe be suitable for other people which are in same situation as yours. On grounds of price it is definitely a winner. In my opinion 1Cover is a good company.

Agreed. From the T&C's, journey must start and finish in Oz. So it seems one cannot supplement this product, in stays>21 days, with other insurance coverage for the balance of the journey. Kudos to qbe (Visa Australia underwriter for the sickness/illness component) for excellent service when hospitalised in Indonesia last year with pneumonia.

    • saty1296 - QBE travel insurance will cover up to 60 days. It's certainly not as cheap as this deal, but might be useful for you to know about.

      • Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

    • I bought 1cover worldwide cover for one year. Not cheap but peace of mind travelling to many countries. Unfortunately its now time to come back to Australia. Back to reality!!!!!

  • can you buy additional cover after 21 days? from them or another 3rd party?

  • For those of you who do want to read it.

I'd be wary of a company who's willing to give that much of a discount on travel insurance. They've got to make up the cost somewhere.

  • Does it cover snowsports? I can't find anything in the PDS.

    • +1

My brief reading of the PDS suggests that snowsports are covered, at least medical expenses.

      • General Exclusions: Sports and Leisure (p36) does not list snowsports as a specific exclusion.
      • Luggage and Personal Effects: We Will Not Pay (p29) does exclude damage to sporting equipment whilst it is in use.

I take this to mean that if you were skiing and hit a tree, breaking both your arm and your skis - your medical bills would be covered, but your skis would not be replaced.

Disclaimer: This is my personal interpretation. I recommend you phone/email the company to get verified correct information.

One general comment on travel insurance, particularly for those of you considering a multi-trip policy, take note in the PDS about whether the insurance is valid in specific countries you may be travelling to. In 2011, I travelled to Egypt and the USA on separate trips (each 28-30 days in duration). We needed to scrutinise the PDS for each company because several specifically excluded cover on travel to countries against government advice on smarttraveller.gov.au

Egypt is listed on smarttraveller.gov.au as "reconsider your need to travel" and that is enough to invalidate some travel insurance.

I should add that much of the reported activity in Egypt is focussed around Tahrir Square so its quite localised. If you go to Aswan and Abu Simbel, you're 1000+ km away from any possibility of trouble. It's kind of like saying "It's dangerous to travel to Port Augusta (SA) because there's a possible protest in Federation Square in Melbourne (VIC)".

However, there's no arguing with an insurance company, so be sure you're covered for what you need (eg: a long period of travel in a country which has a government advisory against it). In the end, QBE travel insurance multi-trip year-long policy worked for me, but your mileage might vary.

  • Thanks - that is great deal.

Not sure what travel together mean?

My wife and I are going to Singapore same day/time and come back together but we booked ticket separately.

  • Will definitely have a look at this one as we need something locally for the multiple business trips we'll take throughout the year!
And likewise matt, we've used TID a bit for local stuff and found them to be well priced and quite helpful with the few claims we've made, so hopefully these guys are just as good!

  • Prob sounding paranoid, after reading many bad experiences with group buying sites, any chance of not being able to redeem etc?
