This deal was popular last time I posted it and it's back as a 'Christmas special'. Basically the same deal though:

Get the FiiO X3 HiFi Digital Audio Player for $190 (with coupon code - US$) and get the 'the weird and wonderful' R3 for free (RRP $129). They also chuck in 2 day free fedex delivery (Not sure how realistic this is though, as Christmas rush is on with any kind of delivery).

It's a pretty good pair of equipment: X3 is amazing at this price range; R3 fit can be a bit of a hit and miss(from people's comments from last deal), but if it fits, they really are something, especially in terms of sound quality). Other people also seem to be pretty happy with both in general:

  • What an odd submission, why wouldn't i get a iPod/Android/Windows phone instead for the same price?

    • Depends on preferences of battery life and sound quality (better on this) vs portability of only having one device (phone).

This device is actually the sort of thing I would leave in the office to listen to music from. Although that's probably not a standard way of using it.

Some people do appreciate above average sound quality:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/122601

    • because the sound quality from an ipod/android/windows phone is sh*t

      • The sound quality from the newer iPods is good.

      • Actually was surprised that W8 supports WAV's, I threw a bunch of N64 Audio rips by mistake on my phone and they played.

      • -2

Environmental noise will drown out all the "Fi" out of FLACs, so, for portable use, no real advantage over 128Kbs AAC played on iPhone. For quiet environment use, better/cheaper alternatives (including Fiio's own E17, with BYO player).

        • +1

          get a better earphone maybe?

        • get a better earphone maybe?

yeah, sure, if you've got money to burn, why not?

    • I carry an iphone and an Astell & Kern AK120 because they are different devices which do different things.

      How 'odd'.

  • Good deal.

  • Still no Rockbox support :(

  • How does this compare in sound quality against say the HTC One or Ipod Touch 5th gen? Is it significantly better or similar?

    • +1

Significantly better, ipods and smartphones have severely degraded the general public's audio standards, at least back in the old days with CD players you were getting decent quality without trying.

    • +1

Is it significantly better or similar?

For portable and casual listening, it's extremely unlikely you'll hear any difference.

There are plenty of people who swear by placebo, so, the only way to prove to yourself is go to a HiFi shop and listen for yourself. In Mebourne, there'a a fantastic store called Addicted to Audio - I don't care if you buy anything from them, but it's well stocked and they'll let you listen for yourself, hence, recommended.

      • If you read some people's opinions on the forum linked on here, someone claimed it had similar sound quality to the sony xperia s, which doesn't sound too promising to me. I would test one out first, but no place around here to do that. It seems good value as long as its significantly infront of my HTC I'll be happy, if not I'll be disappointed and share my opinion here.

        • which doesn't sound too promising to me

Opinions aside, GSMArena's conclusion based on objective measurements Audio Quality Review - "HTC One audio output … offer arguably the best audio quality in the smartphone world right now."

  • Good deal but still want to wait for the FiiO X1 which should out sometime early next year, target price is supposed to be 100$

  • good price. I own a X3, my mate called it the ipod classic looking device.

  • Is the R3 cable detachable?

  • +1

I miss my old Sony MD player. Good times.

  • Thanks OP.

Anyone on here compare the X3 with other players in the market? I own a Cowon z2 and a Sansa player. Would be keen to find out how it stacks up against other players.

    Cheers,
    Rusty

    • "Sansa have you bled yet".

    • No worries. Sorry, never tried either of them so can't comment.

    • The iBasso DX50 is around the same price range as the FiiO X3 (~$60 more).

Comparisons of these two can be found on Head-Fi.

  • Bought one, thanks for posting! I really needed something better than my phone and ipod + something to play FLAC's + a new decent pair of earphones so this works out quite well :)

    • No worries. Hope you like them.

  • +1

Use the previous "Extra 25% off and FREE Shipping" from ThinkGeek with "ThinkGeek Super Monkey Powered Batteries - AA - 4 Pack" (or, otherwise) to make >$200 purchase (to qualify for the offer), results in US$151.49 including UPS/DHL delivery.

    • +2

doesn't come with R3 though. pay $40 more to get $130 earphones…even if they're not worth $130, i'm sure you could sell them for more than $40.

    • Great idea for someone who doesn't need R3 :)

  • OP will you be posting any deals for the X5 when its released ~March 2014?

    • I'm not a store rep, but I will keep an eye on it in their newsletters.

  • I have to admit that I am playing FLAC through my galaxy nexus (running out of memory) and even through Hd25's they sound better via the computer. I'm going to have to try to get a test of something like this

  • I have a ipod classic 160gb.
Does X3 sound much better than ipod classic? anyone compare them in real life?

    • +1

      Personally have no idea.

Seems someone else asked a similar question here.

      http://www.head-fi.org/t/691732/comparison-ipod-classic-rock…

I guess that really no help anyway. Hard to find out info on these type of things and its also subjective. The best option is always test in real life to gauge what you think of it.

Edit: Here's a review that seems to compare the FiiO against the ipod classic.

      http://news.cnet.com/8301-13645_3-57601714-47/fiios-nifty-$200-portable-high-resolution-music-player-is-a-knockout/

  • Okay got it today and very happy. It's great, nice improvement over my HTC One. I guess people who say this is only as good as their smart phone are probably playing mp3's.

  • Just noticed that this promotion is still on. Very surprised that they kept in on for so long, usually they go for only a week or so.
