6mbps 3month - $12.4, $4.10 per month (was $24.7)
12mbps 3month - $17, $5.70 per month (was $34)
30mbps 3month - $20, $6.70 per month (was $40)

Good price for a Netherlands provider, especially the night plan. Discounts are even greater for longer terms, up to 2 years. There's a 5 day free trial if you want to test it out.

I personally prefer NewsDemon. Their prices seem much more worth it ($10.61/month) than this and allow for 50 simultaneous connections and unlimited speed. They also have much higher retention.

    • Are they Netherlands based? Aren't there supposed to be some advantages with using a Netherlands based provider? I've only got a couple months left with the Astraweb $96/12 month deal, so I'm going to start looking for some better deals soon.

      http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/96-yearly.html

      • If you want a cheaper deal for Astraweb, swap to their $20/3 month for Unlimited 10mb/s - total $80/year.

Of course, you'll be limited to downloading ~80GB/day at the slower rate so it might take a little longer to complete your … errr … exotic photo collection.

Honestly, I've used Astraweb for years and they've always been reliable - I dropped the quarterly account and now just use one of their block accounts since I don't download as much now.

        • Have a look at the recently posted Thundernews plans like unlimited Usenet + Unlimited VPN from OctaneVPN for $10us a month, ot iirc 40G + unlimited VPN for $5 (half what the VPN costs direct from octane lol)

      • Netherlands based providers are usually a LOT slower (if they ever) at honouring DCMA takedown requests (legally, I don't think they have to).. so they are a LOT better for finding articles pertaining to copyrighted materials.

Unfortunately most of the Netherlands (I'm with tweaknews.eu) usenet providers don't seem to have more than 900 days retention (but I've never encountered a missing or removed file within that period). By comparison I also have a yearly US based Usenetserver account, which has 1800+ days retention.. but most of the copyrighted materials are removed very quickly.

        • I've retrieved files over 1000 days old from Astrawebs NL servers.

Though, given the fact that Astraweb, NewsgroupDirect, Thundernews, NewsDemon, etc all say 1953+ days retention, it wouldn't surprise me to find out they are all in the same data centre using the same HDDs.

These days I'm using a NGD block account with backup via a Astraweb block account - my Usenet dling has tapered off a fair bit since all the retards jumped on there.

Used to be good back in the late 80's when no-one knew what Usenet was … those were the days :)

  • stupid question why what exactly is this?

    • Not a stupid Q IMO, Ive never used it but I assume from reading between the lines its somewhat like torrents but direct download or something of the sort.

I'm with easyusenet.nl now. I've been with them since their last promo during Easter. You can read my review of them here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/98393

I've got the 30mbit/s night plan that works out to be roughly $3 a month when you buy the yearly plan. Fill rate is pretty good, but like all the other providers, the take downs can be very quick at times. I'm on optus cable and I can almost always get 3.2 to 3.5MB/s which is full rate for my 30mbit plan. I'll most likely extended my current subscription. EU20.25 for another year is too good to pass up when compared to the other providers rates IMO.

With current daylight savings, the night plan means you can download between 11AM to 2AM AEDST. It's 10AM to 1AM when its not.
