New Years Resolution: To do a Harvard course?

Start 1 January. Almost same as course detailed by @mshannon in extensive https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/77969

Registering took 1 minute. Its free & you can get a certificate or just do the bits you want. "Participate in all of the course's activities and abide by the edX Honor Code. If your work is satisfactory, you'll receive a personalized certificate to showcase your achievement." 10-20 hours a week for 9-10 weeks - so plenty of work.

I guess there will be other courses also starting in January, as there were when the original bargains were posted.

"CS50x is Harvard College's introduction to the intellectual enterprises of computer science and the art of programming for majors and non-majors alike, with or without prior programming experience. An entry-level course taught by David J. Malan, CS50x teaches students how to think algorithmically and solve problems efficiently. Topics include abstraction, algorithms, data structures, encapsulation, resource management, security, software engineering, and web development. Languages include C, PHP, and JavaScript plus SQL, CSS, and HTML. Problem sets inspired by real-world domains of biology, cryptography, finance, forensics, and gaming. As of Fall 2013, the on-campus version of CS50x was Harvard's second-largest course."

Please see https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/77969 for lots of info on previous courses.

    aren't all edx courses free?

I took this course last year. It's the best course I've ever taken. That's saying something because I've been at uni for 7.5 years. It made me wish I went to Harvard. The lecturer is awesome.

  • Could taking this course help the course takers with finding computer-related jobs?

    • Yes and no

      • Care to elaborate mate? :)

        • +3

Not if you're being serious…but here goes.

Computer related jobs range from MSY system builder/technician to Intel design engineer to Google system architect (kind of making up titles here). So you may want to elaborate further in your question.

Saying that I can't think of any role where they would give a crap about an online CS subject. You'll either be overqualified for the role, think computer science and MSY or against people with full CS degrees, think Google here.

This would be no more than for your interest.

Edit: Forgot to say, experience trumps all!!

        • But…But… That guy went to Harvard! How many can say that?!?

This isn't a bargain, its usually free.

Its a bargain in the usual sense of the word being for example "the best course I've ever taken. That's saying something because I've been at uni for 7.5 years" or would you rather it wasn't brought to Ozbargainers' attention. imho.

      • It was around last year and has been available for sign ups pretty much all this year. (Didn't finish it last year, signed up again)

With that said, it is a really good course.

  • How useful would this course be for those wanting to move from Chartered Accounting to something like Business/Finance Analyst or Business Intelligence?

    • +2

      Not at all.

I signed up to this last time and forgot about it. I guess I'm a Harvard drop out. xD I tried out code academy then and preferred it.

  • Hi guys interested in this but what does it mean by:

"Enroll in the CS50 Certificate Option at Harvard Extension School…The cost of this option is $350. Learn more about the CS50 certificate."

Am I correct in understanding that the CS50x version is free but the CS50 version is not?
