LG 50PN4500 50" HD Plasma TV $497 @TGG

30

Saw it on today's Herald sun paper. Not fancy Full HD Smart TV But under $500 for 50" is still a good buy for some.

I bought my Panasonic 42" plasma (the same Resolution as this one) for $2200 back in 2005 and the picture quality is still better than (especially black level and have less motion blur and shudder than LED LCD) most fancy TVs today.

    50" and only 1024 x 768p HD Resolution ?
Didn't think they made these in low resolution

  • I am tempted for the price but have to pass on the Resolution….but for the price…Good deal.

  • Limit 1 per customer. Who the hell is going to buy more than 1?

    • +1

A lot of people might try and buy it then re-sell it for profit when the price goes back up.

      • yeah a 30kg TV is going to be real easy to pass off with a healthy margin

        • Er, how is the weight of the TV a factor?

        • you options are limited if you can't post the item

    • An imbecile…..

….maybe Broden….possibly lurking here under another name.

Low resolution compared to more expensive current offerings, but for some consumers (like my parents) who would be upgrading from a 10 year old CRT, it'd be amazing to them. That said, I'm still encouraging them to go for a full HD unit.

6 years ago I paid nearly $2000 for a 42" samsung plasma with same resolution, and it's doing good work as a bedroom TV. Considering the broadcast resolution offered by FTA DTV it does just fine.

Exactly. The vast majority of people watch SD quality resolution either on channels 7/9/10, or on DVD. A very small minority of people watch blu-rays or have Foxtel HD (<20%). As for Gem/One/7Mate… please, 99% of what's shown on those channels is rubbish and most is upconverted anyway.

True, though if their watching habbits are 95% tv/foxtel etc like most people and their viewing distance is greater than a few metres they would be hard pressed to pick any resolution benefit at all…
Still using 720p 42" and 50" panels in my house as my watching habits and viewing distances would benefit very little from a resolution upgrade

    • 7 yrs ago i paid $2500 for a panasonic 42" plasma - Standard def , 1 hdmi port and NO digital tuner. Yes, its an analogue plasma tv!! Having said that, added a set-top box (been through 3), a few house moves and still going strong!
Been so tempted with all the recent deals but for what i use it for its not really worth until this one dies.

      • Same here, back in the days when set top boxes came seperate. My first set top box i bought with mine was $250!!

The only two reasons i would like an upgrade is reduce power consumption and all the new fancy 'smart'ness.

Image quality and resolution isn't a problem for me. My Pana isnt even a true 720p. Its like 700 but accepts 720p and down scale the signal. It'll be nicer to get full 720 or 1080p, but not worth buying totally new tv for.

  • I had a 50" and when watching DVD's / SD TV it reminded me of the old VCD and 51cm TV days

Better off with a small full HD panel like 32" / 42"

Also might want to factor in power consumption as I would guess this is an old model

I would be more inclined to go with this unit if I was after a budget TV

    Old model.
LG replaced our $600 50" HD (minor rattle) with a FHD over a year ago, explaining they no longer made these models.

As for price… nothing special as 50" FHD LG have been offered cheaper. eg $493 9 months ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/96553

  • LG replaced our $600 50" HD (minor rattle)

What do u mean by minor rattle?

    • +2

Occasional annoying rattle suspected to be from speakers. LG replaced speakers, rattle persisted. Called techs out again, took in for observation. No rattle found, but was still there. Was told nothing could be done as no rattle existed & was not a known problem with model.

I found pressing in metal back reduced rattle. Also found rattle occurred only with some programs - low frequency male voice, so recorded those to demonstrate. Convinced Techs to return (would have to pay call out fee if no rattle!). Tech installed padding under back cover, but still had rattle. Finally we located rattle in rear connectors on motherboard.

Contacted LG - immediately offered replacement & upgrade.

My 2 cents. Bought this TV about 2 weeks ago at TGG Northland in Melbourne after my 6 yrs old Samsung 42" plasma failed to turn on. My old Samsung had the same resolution and I was always happy watching TV with it.
Although this 50"LG has the same resolution as my old Samsumg plasma, the quality is unbelievable.
Thanks to THEEARTH's post, I went and got $100 back from TGG. Nice Xmas!
If you are not playing game with it, you can't go wrong with this one. However, TGG is selling the same size FHD plasma for $698.
