  • If you recharge up to the value of $80, Optus will unlock the phone for free.

    • Correct.

So, effectively, if you use that $100 Recharge Voucher you get to recharge THIS phone, and ring Customer Care, you will get the UNLOCK CODE for free! And so, you can use other SIMs like Telstra in this phone.

      • I believe the $100 recharge voucher is 20% off this week.

        thats racist

          Very much so racist!

@Turd: Indians are a not a "race"; they are nationality.

            • +7

@alexportnoy: You really should look at a dictionary first before you make up your own definitions

"1. A local geographic or global human population distinguished as a more or less distinct group by genetically transmitted physical characteristics."
"2. A group of people united or classified together on the basis of common history, nationality, or geographic distribution"

So in your own words, they are a nationality = race.

      • +12

Seriously a comment like that deserves a ban. We don't need ignorant racist on this site.

          • +7

@alexportnoy: Do you even now what the definition of 'racism' is?

            "racial prejudice or discrimination"

              • +6

@alexportnoy: sorry mate, to say you do not like Indians without knowing ALL indians is prejudging someone .ie. prejudice. its clear to anyone that if that is your view, you are racist, and probably a bit of a jerk also (further evidenced by your posts in this thread - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/12826

                • -3

                  @mick123: Who says I don't like Indians?

I am saying that if you don’t like speaking to INDIANS, or have a philosophical opposition to outsourcing Aussie jobs to INDIA, you shouldn’t buy this phone or Offer.

                  • +6

@alexportnoy: Why on earth would you encourage people to not buy it if they dont like Indians. If you aren't racist, LEAVE RACE OUT OF IT.

                    • -1

@zhenjie: except that he's not saying do not buy if you dont like >>>Indians<<<.

He's saying if you find its

                      • Difficult to speak to Indians due to ACCENT problem (which I found is a problem to many others plus myself);

                      or

                      • Not good for Australia since OPTUS outsources all their services thus damaging Australia Economy in the process,

                      consider again before purchase.

Hell, zhenjie, I like your deals but I'm going to stand against you this time. If he's trying to say no buy no Indian why the hell is he bothering to post this deal?

                      • +2

                        @nada: Yes he is.

"If people don’t like INDIANS or outsourcing to INDIA, they should not buy this phone."

              • +3

@alexportnoy: It proves once again you have no clue.

"don't like Indians" sounds pretty prejudice to me.

                • +2

@zhenjie: I dont think its to do with race or racism. Its really to do with the outsourcing to another country. Alex never mentioned though that he doesn't like Indians either, so again, not being racist. He is being suggestive not implying.

If the call centre was in NZ and someone mentioned how they don't like having to talk to New Zealanders or a company outsourcing to NZ, would you call that racism?

                  • +4

@timmye: If your issue is with a call centre then SAY its about the call centre only. Your statement was about Indians and Indians only, not about outsourcing to foreign call centres. Make yourself clear instead of sound like an idiot.

                    • @zhenjie: I don't have issues with call centres.

I am simply saying that if you don’t like speaking to INDIANS, or have a philosophical opposition to outsourcing Aussie jobs to INDIA, you shouldn’t buy this phone or Offer.

                      • +3

@alexportnoy: Okay, but simply by including this statement "if you don’t like speaking to INDIANS… you shouldn’t buy this phone or Offer" you are giving validity to the notion that not wanting to speak to Indians is a valid reason to not purchase this product, which is racist.

Imagine if I found an offer to see the new Woody Allen film for half price and included this statement "if you don't like watching films directed by or starring Jewish people, this film is not for you", people would rightly condemn me as a racist.

                        • @Seachicken: I disagree.

I am not saying I hate Indians.

I am simply saying that if you don’t like speaking to INDIANS, or have a philosophical opposition to outsourcing Aussie jobs to INDIA, you shouldn’t buy this phone or Offer.

                          • +5

@alexportnoy: Rather than repeating yourself again and again and again, how about you go back over my post and read what it actually said. You don't have to directly say "I hate Indians" to be making a racist statement, the very inclusion of advice which suggests that a desire not to talk to Indians is a valid reason not to purchase this phone offer is in itself racist. Take a look at my Jewish analogy.

I think he's CLEARLY explained the result of "desire not to talk to Indians" —- The ACCENT!
Oh well, do you know someone from Ireland?

                              • -1

@nada: Belfast (North Ireland, UK) accents are a lot worse than Eire accents!

                                IMHO.

@timmye: "If people don’t like INDIANS or outsourcing to INDIA, they should not buy this phone."

Is that his view? If so, he is saying he doesnt like Indians, so yes, racist.

And that old "outsourcing is bad and unAustralian" story is crap. What do you want - to close our borders? Fine, let's give back the many many billions we make from countries like China (and even India) from commodities, mining, etc.

Business is globalised. I bet you are on here complaining that services are being outsourced, but what would you do if they weren't. Companies cost base is higher, so their products are more expensive, so you will stop buying from them and go to a cheaper supplier, who most likely imported the product here. Price is important to you, otherwise you would not be on this site.

                    • +4

@mick123: Actually, I would buy Australian-only if there was an alternative. Even at a greatly increased cost.

Unfortunately, for many goods, there IS NO ALTERNATIVE. Try buying a TV wholely Made In Australia - impossible! We've lost our entire skills in some areas to overseas, for a few dollars less..

Right now, I refuse to buy all non-Australian food from Woolworths, Coles & IGA.

I also refuse to buy Indonesian or Chinese made toilet paper & facial tissues. Check the Woolworths Select brand toilet & facial tissues - they are all made in Indonesia or China.

Also, refuse to buy generic or non-generic medicine made in India. Be careful - ALDI Paracetamol & ALDI IBUPROFEN is MADE IN INDIA.

I only buy Australian-made socks, which are $7 a pair more expensive, and only available from Lowes.

If we do not buy Australian-made as much as possible, we will NEVER be able to make Australian again - all the knowledge about how to make something will be in China or India, and we will lose out in the long run.

And it's a lot worse than simply hurting our economy to outsource jobs to China, India or the Phillipines.

We're losing our entire KNOWLEDGE base (aka "expertise") on how to create a product or service. Which is much worse, because when the economy recovers, we won't have the expertise to create things again.

      • +2

Though I had some really bad experience with the call centers, I'd like to say that most of them are quite helpful.
Well, if we dunt out source call center overseas. Sure, you will hold your phone for hours to be able to speak to a rep.

      • +3

After that comment I don't think they'd like talking to you either.

    • +1

Hahaha that was the funniest exchange of comments I've EVER seen on here.

  • +1

although this is a good offer, i must make mention of the fact that it is available in quite a few different stores (including DSE).
The way it works is that you get a 'voucher card' included in the phone's box which contains the credit serial code on it and in fact, there are other phones available with the same promo (such as the 6300 for $179) though admittedly this is the only one where you essentially get a 'free phone'.

I thought that maybe people should know this in case they're unable to get it from coles for whatever reason and am giving it a positive vote as i still think it's a good deal.

    • Nice additional info thanks From that I went to the optus online store and found that this phone can be bought direct for $79 plus the $100 credit. (they also offer a further $50 if you then recharge with $30)

However you need to watch the terms of the offer to see if they suit you. Here they are Watch the 30 day expiry….

*^$150 Online Bonus Offer: Offers ends 31.05.09.^ Online Offer: Available to new customers that purchase and then activate a pre-paid handset or starter kit online. You will receive $100 of Pre-Paid Money which can be used for standard talk, text, MMS or video calls to any Optus Pre-Paid mobile phone within Australia. 30 day credit expiry. Bonus credit will be applied to your account within 24 hours of activation. *$50 Bonus Offer: Minimum recharge of $30. Applies to first recharge only. You will receive $50 MyBonus credit which can be used for standard talk and text to any network within Australia. 30 day credit expiry. Applies to handset activations and new customers that connect to Turbo Cap only.

  • +1

The bonus $100 recharge should be this:

$100 Bonus Recharge Card: Includes $30 MyCredit plus $70 Rev Up Bonus. For some call types, any free minutes or text included in your calling offer will be used before your MyCredit and Rev Up Bonus is used. MyCredit expiry depends on your rate plan. Rev Up Bonus credit expires 30 days from date of recharge activation. Rev Up Bonus excludes premium SMS and content, international roaming charges, Zoo content usage charges, Instant Messenger, video calling and 966. Only available with selected Optus Pre-Paid handset bundles.

    • In other words, only $30 is normal credit that can be transfered by ME2U, NOT the full $100 as described. Also there is a possibility the voucher does not give recharge bonuses, such as Turbo Cap. (Consider the $70 the recharge bonus)

  • +7

i have a feeling that's BS and he is using it as an excuse for being racist

  • +3

I have a f**king hard time when the stupid Bureau of Statistics says literacy - the ability to read - is a serious problem among us these years…until now.

So, if you don’t like speaking to Indians, or have a philosophical opposition to outsourcing Aussie jobs to INDIA, you shouldn’t buy this phone or Offer.

You can test-drive the Optus Indian accent by calling their Optus Customer Care Centre & ask “How much are your Optus Prepaid rates for mobile calls?

is this THAT hard to understand? That hard to "decode" what OP's trying to say here?

    If you

    • Find its difficult to speak w/ Indian due to their ACCENT (which for many people is a f**king problem when communicating w/ some 50% of Indians, which perhaps I should remind you say no to this and you are discriminating against all hearing impaired people australia,)

    or

    • Feel that by outsourcing Aus jobs to India, Optus is hurting Australia Economy and hurting Aussies as the unemployment rate is pretty high and increasing,

you should think about it again before you make the decision.

    Clear?

To hell guys, why would OP post this deal if he's a racist against OPTUS/INDIAN?

    • +4

You obviously haven't read CLEARLY the other comments posted in the thread. Are you also so thick that you can't observe the undertones of each of the racist comments?

      • +1

I like most of your deals zhenjie, but I find you are acting like a wall when it comes to this,

        Please answer this question directly:

Did OP said "DO NOT BUY IF YOU HATE INDIANS"?
OR RATHER, he's only saying "DO NOT BUY IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH INDIAN ACCENT"?

Since when did accent becomes a racist problem????

        • +3

          He sure did.

“If people don’t like INDIANS or outsourcing to INDIA, they should not buy this phone.”

Since he put 'or' you can break that sentence down into two.

"If people don't like Indians they should not buy this phone."
"If people dont like outsourcing to INDIA, they should not buy this phone."

          • +2

            in his post & his comment (on 21/05/2009 - 02:14 )

there's nothing saying "If you dont like Indian" or alike.

            • +3

@nada: I just posted his statement and it was from one of his comments. I've answered your question.

Now, if you have a hard time understanding his comment, which in my mind is pretty clear then I refer to this statement "I have a f**king hard time when the stupid Bureau of Statistics says literacy - the ability to read".

              • @zhenjie: would you be so kind to point me to that comment? is that a comment he made before applehead people swarmed him w/ all these nonsense racist accusation, or in a better word, trolling and trapping him?

                • +6

@nada: It is the commented posted 22hours ago with -12 votes. It is a comment regardless of whether people 'swarmed him', is that another new excuse?

@zhenjie: Yes - I found it. My apologies. On the other hand, I'd call that statement unacceptable, but from all other responses made by OP, I think it's pretty safe to say he didnt mean that (as he repeated

Its a rather predictable result from being a stupid (yes he is because he made that comment) who got himself troll'd.

                    • +6

@nada: Well obviously you are sticking to you defence of the OP even in light of the comment. So I don't think its very fair to call me a 'wall' is it?

There hasn't been enough evidence for me to change my point of view on alexportnoy. You mention trolling…have you even had a look at his post/comment history?

                      • +2

@zhenjie: Hmm I didn't. And perhaps I should. But still I'm wondering why he chose to post this deal if he really hates Indian like many others declared.

                    • +5

                      @nada: that's called a copy and paste.
And don't be so naive to think that you can't read between the lines.

I wonder if people like you avoid non-white employees at shops etc because you think it might be too hard? Truth is, they probably speak english better than most people out there.

                      • @mick123: "read between the lines" is never ever a valid evidence you could put up against someone on court. One thousand people "read between the lines" and they'll get to one thousand different point - you are only reading what you want to read, not what is wrote.

And no, I dont like to talk w/ Irelander too, but I'm happy to have some chitchat w/ Chinese and Koreans you are seeing everywhere. I'm having problem w/ South Asia tho, they tend to talk in such a low voice sometimes to the extent you can't really hear.

            • +3

@nada: "If people don’t like INDIANS or outsourcing to INDIA, they should not buy this phone." - you are a stupid little kid nada - talking about literacy etc but can't read yourself. idiot!

              • @mick123: Just like you, my friend, just like you.
Oh and while I was reluctant to put a POS on this deal I did to … help you to grow up, I think?

      • -1

There are no undertones. You are reading too much into the fact that if you don’t like speaking to Indians, or have a philosophical opposition to outsourcing Aussie jobs to INDIA, you shouldn’t buy this phone or Offer.

went to buy one 2day, the $100 free is actually $30 credit and $70 rev up(last 30 days).
i took it back right away for a refund.

    • +1

Oh really? So the offer stated by Alexportnoy is incorrect?

    • +2

I did try to warn people about it earlier…

  • Discussion run beyond the scope of this thread.

    • +5

I agree. Alexportnoy should not have made such a shallow statement about Optus's customer service by singling out Indian call operators.

Customer service is customer service, regardless who is providing it.

I don't like speaking to INCOMPETENT call operators. I don't care if they are Indian, Irish, or Australian.

Alexportnoy, a warning about speaking to Indian call operators is uncalled for, when in fact many Indian call operators speak English very well and are highly competent employees.

      • +4

Dont know why he just singled that out. On the point of "buy australian" he could've mentioned that Optus is owned by a Singaporean company so all profits are sent overseas.
