Seagate 2397063 4TB Expansion Desktop HDD USB 3.0 $183.20 @ TGG (Officeworks Price Match = $174)

230

Hey Guys,

Good deal if you need a new external HDD or just want to rip out the drives for use in a PC.

Seagate 2397063 4TB Expansion Desktop HDD USB 3.0

Currently On Special at,

The Good Guys & JB Hifi for $183.20

Can be price matched at Officeworks for $174.04. My local Officeworks had heaps of stock and price matched -5% with no dramas.

I grabbed a couple for my HTPC and ripped out the drives. The HDD inside is a Seagate Desktop HDD.15 (ST4000DM000). They can be purchased on their own normally for $195-200 + Freight from Umart & PCCasegear.

They come with a 3 year warranty as opposed to the normal 2 year warranty and can be removed carefully without damaging the enclosure. So if the drives die they can be returned to their enclosure and taken back under warranty without drama.

Picture looks like a minus sign and it's next to TGG. Hmmm..

Please stop with having OW price-matches mentioned in the subject line. The deal is from Goodguys. The OW offer is ongoing and shouldn't be mentioned as part of the post in my opinion. Second time today that I've seen this happen.

That's the way the posting guidelines wiki entry suggests doing it.

Use the merchant you are price match against. For example:
Title: HP Laptop $500 at DickSmith ($475 at Officeworks via Price Match)

Fair enough, thanks for linking that … I missed it. I still don't like it but I'll just ignore it in future.

I think the point is the Officeworks price match policy only applies if their price is higher than another retailer.

Putting it in the post informs people that the price is in this case higher at Officeworks and as such can be beaten by 5% in the case of this specific offer.

Why would you not want to have another $9.16 off the already discounted price?

I guess I just find the big picture worrying. The mega-empires of Coles and Woolworths have done all they can to squeeze out competitors, first in groceries, then in fuel, then in hardware. The competition in those areas is greatly reduced and the marketplace is all the poorer for it. They've created havoc in some segments (eg milk).

I hear people all the time getting enthusiastic about getting a few cents off petrol at the Coles and Woolworths stations but the prices are artificially high to start with.

Reduce the competition = higher prices and margins. It's working for these predator companies very well so far.

Thanks. Picked up the last one at Good Guys then headed to Office Works where they price matched 3x more based on the invoice.

I really don't see a point. 2TB Seagate external hard drive is $79.20 at JB HiFi(if you pricematch it at OW, it can be $75) which means 4TB is $160(or $150).

If your filling up say a 4 port NAS then you get 16TB storage instead of 8TB from 4 drives. Also fewer drives running = less power consumption.

If your just using it as a normal external HDD that you only plug in as needed then sure just buy 2 x 2TB drives and save the money. Just depends on your requirements and how you use it i guess.

  • WOW, 4TB is way more than enough for me, but is it safe to have all your eggs in one basket? or just better kept 2X 1.5TB + 1x 1TB to have all my stuffs on separate portables instead?

that just means youre more likely to lose your stuff, just less of it. get some backups either way

      • I do, but it's expensive. 16x NAS Red WD 3TB drives and I'm almost outta space. Having to buy 2x HDD space is killin me, can't wait till a day comes when media failure is a thing of the past.

  • how can i live without hard drives….. i cant

Just price matched with OFW and got the 10% back to school price beat promotion http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/landing/Back_to_school

    • I can confirm lwinstan's report and have successfully price matched at Office Works with 10% discount. The lady at the counter was adamant that technology price beats are only 5% and the 10% back to school discount is only for stationery but the system scanned it with a 10% override. She didn't even realise that the final price of $165.60 was 10% off, I quickly paid and left. :) This was at the Dandenong South OW.
