Samsung 50" Full HD LED LCD TV $716.40 - 10% off Most TV's @ JB Hi-Fi

170

JB HiFi are currently doing 10% off the majority of TV's, some of exclusions as per normal - http://www.jbhifi.com.au/.

The deal on this base model UA50F5000 Samsung 50" Full HD LED LCD for $716.40 is the one that caught my eye.

I know some were picking up this TV cheaper from selected JB's recently, or ozbargainers were grabbing the cheap Sony 50" or a TV from the DSE last minute 10% off for online purchases … but this seems a good deal for the moment.

I mainly watch free to air, will 50Hz be a problem?
I have read that 100Hz makes the picture worse "soap opera effect"

      • Series 5.. Might as well get an AWA. Cheaper, better specs.

using FTA tv as the example, it is broadcast at 50Hz..
Panels with refresh rates >50Hz will use motion processing 'magic' to 'create' additional frames to increase the number of frames in the video..
        For example 50Hz = 50 frames/sec..lets take frames 1 and 2
a 100Hz tv for example will see frames 1 and 2 and calculate what it thinks has changed/movied between frames 1 and 2 and insert a new frame with this info in-between frames 1 and 2..
        - So a 50Hz tv will show the broadcast 50 frames in one second as frames 1,2,3,4….50
        - A 100hz tv will show the broadcast 50 frames as well as 50 it has 'made up' in one second as frames 1,1a,2,2a,3,3a…..50,50a
So 1/2 the stuff you see wasn't broadcast, it was 'calculated'/'derived'

It is essentially an attempt at 'smoothing' out the motion. Some people like it, some people hate it.. Some think it looks smoother, some think it looks very artificial..(and many people disable motion processing on their new 100Hz/200Hz/etc LEC/LCD's removing much of the 'Hz' hype anyway)

In general just because a tv is 100Hz v 50Hz does not make the 100Hz tv automatically better as other aspects such as colour gamut, black levels etc can all make a much larger impact on picture quality

If it looks good to your eyes showing FTA tv, thats all the matters… who cares if it looks better showing Avatar if you spend 99% of your time watching FTA and downloaded tv shows

        • 60hz is my preference - great for FTA; and perfect for gaming
          (Over a 50hz panel)

        • 60hz Panasonic TV here. Is great also for FTA, gaming but also Blu-ray.

        • Can the human eye-brain connection actually discern and process what 100 frames per second looks like? How many times do people blink per minute, which would mean that their eyes would be momentarily closed therefore missing the micro second of extra frames?
Anything quicker than a slide show and I don't think I would notice the difference. TV looks fluid to me in 50/60hz for all types of content, as it always has.

Interesting to see for a change, discussion is positive for 50/60hz… the first comment I always see in OZB is "…only 50hz" :)

Nice find. Save a whole $1.40!!!

Get JB Hi-Fi to price match that!

    • When does that GG deal finish? It's only $2 for delivery to my postcode but I want to go harass JB to see what they'll offer to beat this

  • I just bought this TV last night for the bedroom, so i didn't want to spend too much. For the price it is amazing and the USB plays pretty much every media i tried. Initially i was going to buy the Sony 50in KDL50W670A for $747 from DSE last week, however i didn't like the bulky back as i need to wall hang my TV. This Samsung is thin evenly across the back so was perfect for wall hanging.
