Direct Drive….stay away from them. If you want a compressor to do any DIY work around the cars and bit of DIY paint job, go for a belt drive. They are quieter, will last longer, have way more duty cycle.

    • What brand and model would you recommend for irregular use (painting) around the home? I was also interested in a brand of compressed painting applicators at Bunnings (with a german-sounding name) that looked alright on the display video for about $300.

Airless paint sprayer would spray most of the paint onto the surface instead of in the air to waste and kill. Any Wagner from ebay will do much better than air compressor.

        • Thanks

No worries. I've got a small airless Wagner from a US seller on ebay about 3 years ago for less than half the price you pay here (lucky country). The unit come with a step down transformer mounted at the lower side of the compressor. Enough power for all paint jobs around home. Lent to handful of friends, withstand quite a lot abuse. Still rock solid. Only downside of spray painting is the prepare (masking) and clean up take quite a while. Painting is easy after some practices.

Couldn't agree more, I made the mistake of buying one of these. They are so damn loud! As mentioned previously the duty cycle is shit and I would seriously avoid using it paint anything.

I have replaced mine with a belt driven 100L toolex compressor that I picked up secondhand for $350.

    As for an air compressor:

    is a decent unit.

These come on sale quite often via Super Cheap. It was 50% off a week or so back. Keep an eye out for them.

    • Do you need to replace belts over time, are there any other maintenance costs involved? Obviously everything needs maintenance, but extra cost for the odd job over longevity.
