For $350 you really expect wireless speakers/sub too??

      • +1

For $347 Samsung F5550 is available at HN with wireless speakers and a bluray player. I will appreciate if someone can please tell me if this samsung a good buy as I am looking for sub 400-500 range HT with bluetooth/screen mirroring features and decent sound.

        • +10

It depends on what you want to do.
The F5550 isn't a receiver, it is a bluray player hooked up with a surround sound system.

It only accepts 1 HDMI Input and 1 Optical Input, therefore you will be strugging to plug anything more than 2 additional devices.

Where as the receiver bundled with the above is VSX-523, which supports:
          4K Resolution Passthrough

          Inputs:
          4 x HDMI
          2 x Composite
          1 x Audio In
          1 x Digital Coaxial
          1 x Digital Optical
          1 x USB (iPod/iPhone, USB drive)

So if you have more devices that you want to hook up to your surround sound system then you are better off getting the Pioneer.

And future proofing would be better with the Pioneer system, as the speakers can be used in other receivers.

The pitfall to Bluray/DVD combined units is that you may have trouble using the speakers down the track with other receivers, especially wireless speakers.

        • Cheers mate!
will look for other options then. You saved me a trip to HN

  • Can anyone comment on the sound Quality of these. Also can i expect it to be better than my Logitech 5.1 Z5500?

    • I too would be interested to hear if the sound is as good or better than the Z5500.
In reading the reviews im not convinced that this receiver will do DTS sound through Optical or HDMI input. Does anyone know if it will do DTS?

      • +1

I have a similar Pioneer setup with the older amplifier (not much change in specs to the this version). Its a great system with very good sound quality for something in this price range. I don't think that it has the same "oomph" as the logitech system, but I believe that irt trumps it in dynamic range.

        • +1

I usually find the subs on these HTS packs to be alittle too weak.

Switch out the sub for a pre-amp'd (Powered) dedicated sub then you will have alot better audio.

          The satelites aren't too bad.

        • Thanks for the feedback, I am tempted to put the logi in the study for the pc/2nd tv and putting this one in the main room… Damn you ozbargain for alerting me to things I don't need, but want! Its a great price for this setup, so tempting!

        • Agree, that's one of the best (if not the best) thing about the Z5500, the sub is nuclear powered and really shakes the room during action scenes. A powered sub upgrade would make this package a lot better.

      • +2

Why on earth don't you think it wouldn't do DTS through HDMI?

Now through optical I'm not sure, but this isn't a HTIB.. It's a fully fledged receiver and speakers/sub bundled with it (along with a DVD player).

        • I was getting confused about my TV's ability to do DTS passthrough - but it wouldn't matter with this unit! Sorry!

It's ability to allow the HDMI to pass through it while it is in standby mode is pretty good idea, although I prefer all home electrics to be off at the wall when not used (The true OZB way).

Just Calculated the Standby rate, it's 0.1 Watt, so about 50KWH or $9 Per year in standby mode if you have peak/off peak.

        • +3

It all comes down to what people pay for their time and inconvience.

For 0.1W and $9 a year, I don't care that much, as it would be annoying to switch it off at the wall. It would also waste me 1-2min every time I want to switch it off.

Lets do the calculation this way instead:
1 min to switch it on and off (assuming it takes 30sec each time).
You use the device every day.

          365days to a year.

Hence means you lost 365minutes which is around 6hrs.
Those minutes you spent saving $9, you could have used to work an extra day hence making up almost 1 days worth of work which i'm sure far outweighs $9.

        • Good Point. But to clarify I meant to convey that $0.50 P/A (Thanks Alzori!) or 0.1 Watt is sweet bugger all!

When you have less frequently used devices that use much more power, it makes sense to turn them off. Then throw in solar which during dayligh hours fetches 23c feed in, the cost goes up as well as you are reducing your feed in at premium rates.

Switching on/off devices at a wall takes me a few seconds on my way past.Do you move your couch, lift the rug, unplug and then zip tie your cords together each time? ;)

        • +1

I think your maths is a bit off greydaniel; 0.1W means 2.4Wh per day, 876Wh/year or 0.876kWh/year, making the cost less than 50c.

        • +2

          How right you are!

Are there any Udemy math courses 100% off out there??

      • I also have a similar setup with an older receiver. I found the sub fine not as boomy as the logitech but still does the job and I don't sit around wishing for a better sub, it's loud enough and for the lost boomyness it gains more control. The subwoofer is powered too. The only niggly thing I found was that the rear speaker cables are a bit on the short side. Watching some music videos through the ps4 atm and yeah if people want a "better" sub we clearly have different tastes in how we listen to music lol.

  • i purchased the next model up (VSX-528-K) from JB for $348 on boxing day, not sure if this deal is still available, but worthwhile asking if you've already got speakers…

  • It's a good buy, although DVD is useless for me.

    • if the DVD is useless

      http://www.videopro.com.au/p-6773-pioneer-htp323-51-channel-…
saves 7 bucks and its free delivery (potentially…dont know where you live…its free for me)

      • Thats only the 323 receiver though instead of this one having a 523. Is there any difference?

        • you made me double check the deal….thinking it was a 523-k!

VSX-323, 5-channel, 100 watt per channel, No MCACC only in black, 4 HDMI input ports, 1 output, 3D,ARC and 4k pass-trough

          523 has 130w per channel

i think thats the biggest difference

  • SOLD.

  • Before I buy, two more things…

Iv'e never heard of OO.com.au - anyone have dealings with them before?

Any free shipping codes or discount vouchers/offers to add to this deal to sweeten it?

    They took the money though….

    Nervous day or two ahead!

    • Srange - I have received the confirmation emails from both OO and PayPal. Is it possible that you mistyped your email address?
I also dealt with these guys years ago with no issues.
Have you given them a call? The number is 1300 132 151.

I'm not sure how amazing this price is, though I am not just trying to talk it down.

I got the VSX-522 on clearance for $220 @ JB some while ago, and the 523 just added airplay I think.

If you need a (outdated) DVD player and average speakers then it may be a deal for you, however if you are just eyeing the amp then wait a bit as I'm sure it will be around for $250 or less soon enough.

Having said that, I REALLY like my VSX-522. My older Sony 7.1 amp got relegated to powering twin kicker subbies and the VSX-522 does a really great job with the main 5 speakers. I don't really miss the 6th/7th channels, as the Pioneer does a far better job of signal processing (at least to my ears). It also handles 24bit 96KHz while still processing surround fields, which the Sony wouldn't do above 48Khz. The VSX-522 will also process 192Khz but drops sound fields.

  • I scored the 522 without dvd but with a larger centre channel from dse for $198 when they couldn't find the 521. Was a great deal but bought this one for pass through & maye will take the rest of it.
Very happy with it but I have decent front spks & only use the rear fill, centre & sub from the pack.

  • Does anyone have opinion on this deal vs the Yamaha YHT-299 from HN for $367?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/128576

Disregarding the DVD player (which I don't really need), which deal would give the best bang for the buck?

  • Hi all, Can I assume the DVD player is blue-ray?

    • Nope. Not blu ray, just plain old DVD.

  • FYI if anyone is interested this deal is back: http://www.oo.com.au/Pioneer-5-1CH-HD-Home-Theatre-_P220299.…

  • Deal expired? $449.95 + $19.95 shipping now

    • It seems that way.

  • OVER 7,400 VIEWS IN THE PAST 48 HOURS!

  • My subwoofer came with a massive hole on the back panel :s

    • Mine too! How odd…
Are you going to return it?

      • I'm definitely going to return it, I tested it to see if it affected sound and it was terrible. The punctured hole had wind blowing through it and made a distinct rustling, rattling sound each time the bass came on. I sent pictures and details over to [email protected] but they have yet to respond.

        How about you?
