I bought a unit for around $30 years ago from some Asian Grocery store in Springvale, had no idea it was so expensive until several months after my purchase. It's a nice looking digital balance, but there are several things I thought I'd mention as a long-time owner of one:

      • Nowhere to store the included temperature probe. If you lose track of the probe, it means you have less chance of using it when you need it.
      • Cable for temperature probe is quite short.
      • Temperature measurement only goes up to 150°C, making it mostly useless for frying/high-temp cooking.
      • The Unit button switches between metric and imperial as expected, but there's no way to switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius, if that's how you swing.
      • Runs on 9V batteries (which cost more than AA), and the backlight drains the power quite quickly. Depending on usage pattern, you might have to change batteries every few months. I finally got fed up with running out of batteries, so I'm going get to a 9V clip and a powerpack soon so I can run off mains.
      • The screen can be obscured if the object you're weighing is quite large
      • The short 2-minute auto-shutdown timer means if you have something you're adding to the mixing bowl and you step away for a while (maybe to check a recipe), you can lose the reading (though you could argue the same problem exists with all digital balances). One way around this is to set the countdown timer to 99 minutes, but then you exacerbate point five above.
      • If you make any accidental spills on the balance, it can be a bit of a pain cleaning stuff out of the button crevices.
      • The pan is non-removable making it hard to clean anything spilled in between the pan and the plastic base. The pan can scuff/scratch over time, ruining the look. The printing on the pan comes off as well.

It's served me well and it is still the main balance I use in the kitchen (also bought a cheapo 0.01g resolution digital balance off eBay for measuring spices), but just some points I thought I'd give out if anyone was interested.

  • Was there any left at point cook

What flavour was the Chuppa Chup?

    • actually, a bucket of chuppa chup is the standard practise to check digital scale for many years :)

    • Also, they're 35c each at Aldi the last time I checked.

  • Wow that is so cheap.

  • None left at 3 stores I tried, none at point cook

    • I tried Maroochydore, none. Havent had any since prior to Xmas. Lady says its probably a clearance item.

      :(

Lol! Sorry wasn't going to Aldi with a screaming 2 year old and newborn twins to save 10 cents :-) it was watermelon flavour. The item code is 43051502 if you ring
1300 753 567 tomorrow they will be able to search stock at the store for you

Wouldn't it be useful if you actually put WHAT THIS ITEM IS in the title?

Not many of us can remember all the Breville item numbers, ya know.

Had this scale for a couple of years now. Only gripe is it takes those funny square batteries that you never have. It's pretty accurate, I weigh my mail parcels on it too as it goes to 1 gram increments.

What are you posting in 1 gram increments? Castor Sugar?

      • Maybe sparkles is sending sparkles ;)

    • I'm getting a 9V powerpack and a 9V clip and gonna make mine mains powered.
