  • Whats your take on NOD32 vs Bitdefender? I've heard good things for Bitdefender but i'm currently using my NOD32 and i have no troubles so far, on the other hand, my parents (computer illiterates) are using NOD32 and seems to have gotten tons of virus…

    • +16

your parents like dodgy porn sites seems the obvious answer

      • +2

Hmm… so when i ask for opinion, i get an attack on my parents and there are actually up votes…

Whilst that may be true, i would appreciate you keep your attacks to myself and not anyone related to me. Also, i don't need you commenting on anything my parents do.

        Thanks

        • +10

This is the first time I've seen someone get upset about a 'your mumma' joke in a long time!

        • Very tasteful community we have here i see…

        • +3

What i'm upset about is the fact that i was asking for opinion on whether to switch to NOD32, not what my parents were doing when their computer got affected.

As i said, whilst that may be true, i don't see how that was actually called for.

        • I would choose Bitdefender over NOD32, last time I used nod32 and then changed to another antivirus, so many virus were found when scanning, apparently having NOD32 was like not having anything.

        • +2

It was just a throw away, light hearted remark. Anyway anecdotal evidence of one case is no way to compare antivirus software. Have a look at AVComparatives.

        • I'm pretty sure BitDefender beats Nod32 in every field according to AV Test

        • +1

Good lord, what a sook. If you really do consider what he said as 'an attack' you really just shouldn't leave the house, or talk to anyone at all…especially on the internet. It was clearly a joke. I picture you getting offended by a slight breeze….

    • +1

I've been using the bitdefender from the westpac promo .. best one I've used so far. It doesn't slow down my laptop like other antiviruses,

And the safepay feature is a plus, it adds another level of security when your using internet banking

      • I've been using this too, really like it. Did have to add one or two exclusions for hacking games and things like that.

Best one i've used so far.

My westpac one expires in 30 days, do you know if you can just keep doing it Eastern? I think you need to make a new account as I have it on two laptops and a tablet at the moment and they all sync to expire at the same time. Happy to pay $8 for two years for great software.

Cannot remember if the westpac is 6 or 12 months

    • my parents (computer illiterates) are using NOD32 and seems to have gotten tons of virus…

Isn't NOD32 just doing its job if it's picking up those viruses? A lesser antivirus program would just let those viruses stay there undetected… ;)

      • By that i mean it has already affected the computer. And i actually have to reformat the machine occasionally

  • When I installed it a few weeks ago, it increased my boot time dramatically. Once I got to the welcome screen I got a black screen for a while. Then enter my password get another black screen lasting 2+ mins.

Had to remove it the next day.

  • I too am a Nod32 user of about 5 years and never had a problem with it. Might want to check your parents computer and see what is going on.

    • +2

I used them too until a few weeks ago when my subscription expired. ESET was not a memory hog. But I've read in reviews its detection rate ranks quite low compared to others.

      • yes, I liked NOD, but poor detection rates made me move to Norton, which is not as easy to use, but detects malware.

      • +1

But I've read in reviews its detection rate ranks quite low compared to others.

        That's not true at all.
Compared to the commercial juggernauts like Norton, Trend, McAfee and BitDefender it's as near as makes no difference in real-word usage.

Also, NOD32 has one of the lowest false positives rates out there, which is a god send if you've ever used something that flags every 5th file or website you open as "riskware/trojan generic/suspicious/potentially dangerous".

Not to mention it's one of the lightest and least bloated AV suites.

Kaspersky is the only definitive step up from the majority of AV software but to me it's like a Norton that actually functions; with all the Norton intrusiveness and sluggishness.

Comodo Internet Security is probably the best consumer AV/personal firewall/sandbox suite out there as it's the only thing to consistently pass Matousec's ridiculous security challenges; but it seriously impedes your connectivity and functionality without a whole lot of configuration and is a total system hog.

      • That's what i was kind of afraid of, detection seems fine for stuff that i do.

But my parents download asian dramas and that to me is the most likely source =/. I've told them time and time again to stop since we have tvbj subscriptions anyway but apparently "its more up to date"

Anyone in a similar situation butis using Bitdefender?

  • I'm a Bitdender user since Westpac gave it away, and it's my favorite anti-virus! Only had one issue - it doesn't let me play GTA4 without setting up an exclusion (doesn't like Rockstar Social Club - neither do I) but that wasn't hard to fix. :)

  • I don't like bitdefender.
Got onto a free Eset nod32 recently and find it to be a better program.

  • I've been using Bitdefender for a couple of years now on a few PCs (still have a few years of free licenses left!) and I haven't experienced any problems that would make me want to go back to (paying for) NOD32. No issues with boot times or resource hogging or false positives, and it seems to be well rated in various third-party tests in terms of detection rates.

argh bit of a pain had to enter US address for it to work (after trying Vme and paypal and cc card directly)

    • This helped me out. Hopefully they just email the codes out. If they check/validate info then the order will probably get cancelled. :(

      • +1

They won't cancel . Just use a us address like a las Vegas hotel and all should be good

        Mine went through no problem

        • I tried Visa with US address, and also PayPal - no dice. Not sure how I can get it now.

  • I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials for past 2 years and never have a problem with it. It's free of cost, and goes very light on CPU. Though, I am not sure Bitdefender is any better than Security Essentials. Any views?

    • MSSE has been scoring rather poorly in recent years, probably becoming a target like most of MSs products. Support is also a big issue with MSSE - you pretty much have none.

    • These people use Ms SE as their baseline cezond. Pick your OS and take a look at the ratings.

    • How do you know you don't have a problem? It could be that you are infected with something and MSSE doesn't know about it.

    • I've been using MSE / Windows Defender and Malwarebytes for a couple of years without any problem. An AV program will not be sufficient if it does not include malware detection. I'd avoid Russian and PRC websites whenever possible as they seemed to be the source of many viruses and malwares. I also use a popup-blocker.

Has anyone tried running Bitdefender alongside Malwarebytes?

  • Dammit. Just got this email.

Your order (Sales Order Number: xxxxxxxx) cannot be processed at this time. We could not verify the address that is on file with your card-issuing bank. All orders must have a verifiable U.S. billing address and issued by a U.S. bank.

    :/

    • +3

Mine worked and I have the key. Basically I just changed the shipping address in PayPal that comes up at the top.

Used my real name then las Vegas hotel address. Seems to check state and zip code is a match.

Used direct bank as payment not sure if that's relevant tho.

Mine expires in 60 days so not sure if it adds 2 years or I should wait a bit before activating. I'll check with their staff

      • I did that but with V.me but the credit card attached to that still has an AU address on it. Ditto for PayPal and Visa. As I can't direct pay I'm pretty much stuffed. Anyone else care to order this for me and send me the key? Will put $10 into your PayPal account immediately.

      • It adds on if you enter the key via your BD console

      • +1

Did the same as you AussieMark and can confirm that it works. Got my code about 5 minutes after the order was placed… My new address is The Venetian in Las Vegas :)
Paid for direct bank through paypal and worked without issues.

        Great find for the O.P.

        • Did the same as these guys, apparently I also live at Plaza Hotel & Casino :)

      • This works, just got confirmation email with the product key and download link. :)

    • Have you guys tried using AMEX? The US PSN store has the same problem, rejecting AU issued credit cards, but AMEX works for them.

  • +1

Well shit. I just bought total sec 2014 for $40 yesterday

  • Great deal OP!

  • +1

    Trying again…

    EDIT: Worked. Thanks guys. :D

  • Can I use my new key on top of an already running license, still 100 days to go… don't want them to go parallel.

    • yes, just enter key in the console

      • Thanks. Now 837 days left

  • Does anyone know if the licenses start from when you buy it or from when you activate it. Could I buy multiples and use them later and get the full 2 years out of them?

    • i want to know that too!
      cheers!

  • My paypal cant add US address :(

  • This'll probably kill it:

'Your order will not be processed if your shipping address does not match your PayPal confirmed address.'

  • Successfully ordered and installed using AU PayPal account.
Had to create a new shipping address with a US address, left the billing address as my Australian one to match the credit card. Tried it with the AU address for shipping the first time and Newegg threw an unspecified "payment could not be processed" error.

    • sweet :)

    • How do you add the US address?

      • in your paypal settings

      • In Newegg select the PayPal option, which blanks out all the address options on NewEgg, when it takes you to the Paypal website, login, agree to the amount and then where it has "shipping address" at the top, click the "add new" option to the right of the drop-down box and enter a US address. I suggest entering your favourite NY pizza parlour :)

  • +2

Viva Las Vegas! I'm at the Rio Hotel. Going downstairs to catch Penn & Teller after I install my new AV.

  • Im getting this message?

The shipping address information we received from PayPal indicated that your address status is "unconfirmed". Unfortunately, Newegg only ships to confirmed PayPal addresses at this time. If you would like to use PayPal for this purchase, you will need to update your PayPal shipping information to a confirmed address.

Total Security 2014 is only US$14.95, so I would recommend that over Internet Security.

    http://sharewareonsale.com/s/bitdefender-total-security-sale

    • +1

I agree Total Security is a better package however I think the one posted https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/127515 is a better deal (it says expired but when I click on the link it is still going). It allows 3pcs as opposed to the one you gave which only allows for 1.

      • You can buy 3 pieces, and then chat to BitDefender on their live chat, and they will combine them into one license.

If you want to add additional PC's to that, you can deduct 30 days for each PC you want to add.

      • +1

Agreed, this for me is the better deal. No messing around with US addresses and 3 PC's fully covered not just internet security. Thanks for posting the link.

    • What the diff?

  • Thanks, took about 10 mins for the order to get charged & the key to come through.

  • +1

The link posted by tusker for Bitdefender Total Security 2014 for USD14.99 is actually for 3pcs. Even though it says 1 pc when you click the link. Click "Buy it now external" on that page and you will see its for 3pcs for 1 year.

    • Yeh, but it's also only 1yr, whilst this is 2. So it's $4/yr vs $14.99/yr - over 3x the price!!! lol

  • Sweet. Successfully ordered.
    Thanks!!

  • isn't this free usually??

    • That's Norton.

Oh no, they even pay you for using their product ;)

      • and it is still a rip off….

        • I don't believe $150 profit was a rip off. I could also uninstall Norton.

  • Its now showing up as
    Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 - Value Edition - 3 PCs / 2 Years - Download
    Item #: N82E16832719124
Return Policy: Downloadable Software Replacement Policy
$32.99 (down from $69.95 with -$36.96 Instant Saving)

How can I get it for $8?
    Am I missing something?

    • +1

      enter code EMCYTZT5446 at checkout

      • Didnt realize that I had to create an account with them.
        Thanks heaps :)

  • Using the method described by others (PayPal with US address), I'm receiving this error:

"There is an issue with promo code EMCYTZT5446. Please check promo code again or contact customer service."

    • Are you entering the promo code in paypal?

Promo code should be entered in newegg checkout, you should see the $8 price before you proceed to choosing your payment of choice.

      • Entered in NewEgg, saw the $8 price, error occurred when I tried to submit final payment (after returning to NewEgg from PayPal).

I did have an earlier attempted order cancelled because of address (I presume) - maybe I've been flagged as non-US. shrug

        • Got flagged as fraud and my card got frozen. zzz

  • *guys i combined the $14 dollar total security license with the $8 new egg deal so now have 3 years

Just speak to support. You can either combine them and get 60 days bonus because you are downgrading to just internet security or you can combine them both. So i have 3 years now for 3 pcs.

now my only question is can you buy multiple new egg copies and combine them to last for 10 years?

    • You had one of each licence?, what did support mean when they said "you can combine them both"?

  • Here's the summary pdf of avcomparative's site:

    http://www.av-comparatives.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/av…

    Cheers

  • Tried paypal using shipping address in USA.
All looked good until 30 mins later I get email..

"You have attempted to send a payment to Newegg.com using PayPal. However, this payment did not complete. The amount has not been debited from your PayPal account. For more information, please contact Newegg.com.":

Then I looked at Newegg email, "Our records indicate that the above item(s) was either previously purchased under the same customer account, using the same credit account, or ship to the same address and, with that purchase, the quantity limit for the above item(s) has now been exceeded."

Anyone else use the Venetian Hotel in Vegas?

I might try again with dry cleaners in Vegas.

    • Update:

Changed address to dodgy dry cleaners in Colorado.
      All ok, worked.

  • great worked with me :)

  • As mentioned above I can also confirm Newegg accepts with Australian Amex cards issued by American Express.

  • if you have Bitdefender 2013, can you upgrade to 2014 and retain whats left in your current license (i have 144 days left on 2013)

    • Yes you can (I did the same a couple of months back). Nowadays, many AV products allow free upgrades if you have an active/current subscription.

  • What is the 'direct bank' option in PayPal which people are referring to?

I have the options: (1) Bank account (Instant transfer); and (2) Credit/debit card.

Don't want the fraud squad onto me again, freezing my card

    • Option 1 - bank transfer. And by the looks of it, we've used all the Vegas hotels….

    • I purchased with an aussie credit card via paypal. I did 2 things
      - created a newegg account with a US address
      - added the same address to my paypal shipping address

Then simply paid with my cc.

  • I installed on my PC running Windows 8.1.
After install, my PC keeps going into recovery mode and can not be repaired.
    Anyone else get this?

    • I have 8.1 no problems after install.

    • +1

This happened to one of my laptops too. I think it is because I had total security and internet security trying to finish the install every time I restarted.

Also blocked the internet from working when I corrupted the install.

Pain in the butt as its stuck in a repair loop now. Was trying to uninstall internet security and install total security

      • I emailed BitDefender support as I was stuck in a recovery loop as well.

Their response was to wait for a BitDefender updated version that should/would resolve this known issue with windows 8.
