    also 16:9 :(

    • whats wrong with 16:9?

      • +4

I don't think there is anything wrong with it it is just a very wide screen for a monitor, I personally prefer 16:10 but its just a personal preference. If you watch allot of TV or video through your pc, 16:9 is probably better.

        • +2

90% consumer grade monitors are 16:9 now. 16:10 was more common about 4-5 years ago but died out since then.

        • +11

I think you'll find they 'died' out because manufacturers (and retailers) wanted to be able to put "Full HD" stickers and marketing on their displays. It has nothing to do with which is better, what users want or anything else.

For media displays (TV's etc) 16:9 may be good, but for a computer display it's sub standard.

        • +1

Actually, for the same screen size (diagonal length), the screen area on 16:9 is about 5% less than the screen area on 16:10 monitor, meaning less $ to manufacture.
Combined that with the 16:9 screen size on movies/TV shows, you don't see 16:10 too often these days.

        • I don't see how 16:9 monitor being sub standard for computer display. Personally I still prefer my 16:10 Dell U2410 24-inch monitor, but I am fine with a 16:9 monitor. There is no big difference between them. Now they even have ultra-wide monitor, with something like 2.35:1 ratio, good for those ultra-wide blockbuster movies or wide-screen gaming.

        • +4

No, Yanoflies- you've got it backwards bud.

Word and excel docs, and surfing the net… and pretty much everything other than watching a movie is better in 16:10.

As has alrady been said, its the Native HD marketing factor of 16:9 that's won everyone over. When you have been using 16:10 and are forced to use a 16:9, you'd be very surprised on how much extra scrolling you have to do to see eerything.

        • 16:10 is still around and prefered if you are into photography

      • I prefer 16:10 - it's a computer monitor, not a TV - and unfortunately most monitors are becoming 16:9, meaning more white space on the sides of websites, etc (i.e. non TV use).

6 downvotes for preferring 16:10 monitors, where the guy above got upvotes for preferring monitors with VESA mounts? and the others agreeing with me getting upvotes?

        ouch

    • think about 4:3 ;)

      • What about 4:3 monitor?

        • I think he means it could've been worse.

  • I've never bought anything from MSY yet, so I placed the order and got the order email - does that mean I can already go and pick it up today/tomorrow, or I have to wait for another "pick-up ready" email?

    • +2

You have to wait for the "pick-up ready" email

Is 16:9 ratio a bad thing? Why is that?

    • +1

      More pixels is more better.

      • +1

Of course, but that usually means more expensive too.

    • -7

I find it annoying to play games on a monitor that is rectangular. just imo

      • +20

what do you use? a circular monitor?

        • great for scoping

    • Is 16:9 ratio a bad thing? Why is that?

The issue is vertical space. 16:9 is a very short and wide ratio. Its only 1080 pixels tall.
For comparison, 16:10 monitors are 1200 pixels tall.

That extra 120 pixels might not sound like much but they are very useful when you're word processing or browsing the internet. A4 pages are much taller than they are wide and you end up with a lot of wasted space on a 16:9 monitor.

The reason we have 16:9 is that it is cheaper to make. Manufacturers sell this ratio under the guise of 'movie-viewing' when in reality its all about cheaper panels (fewer pixels -> cheaper).

  • Do they post?

I paid full price ($185) a couple of weeks ago for this exact monitor and I wasn't disappointed with this. The colours and motion are really nice. The only thing I wish it had is VESA mount holes but for the price I am still happy. It is a Glossy panel which is what I wanted.

    • Apparently the screen is glass-based and not plastic. Is that true? Does it weigh a lot?

      • It's hard to say. The text is really easy to read on this screen. When I knock on the surface it doesn't feel cold like glass so if I was to guess I would say it isn't glass. The weight is mainly in the base I think.

        • What are the viewing angles like freedom78? I'm considering one of these for a cocktail arcade cabinet. Thanks in advance!

        • +1

Very good viewing angles (better than TN panels) but remember you get reflections off the glossy so it may or may not suite your purpose.

        • Thanks freedom78, I appreciate your help!

  • Does it feature WiDi?

    • I'd suggest no, as there is a) no mention of it in the official product guide, and b) the monitor doesn't have any wireless network capabilities in the first place.

    • no

  • Good price but hopefully they still have stock tomorrow at Clayton!

  • +1

Hmm not sure I'd buy an Acer monitor.

    • +2

Most of the budget monitors now come from the same factories, so no need to think about it too much.

    • +3

I've had my Acer G245H 24" 1080p monitor for years now (about 4) use it every day, excellent color reproduction, very low latency as well for gaming and no ghosting / motion blur during movies…

Looks great too, what's not to love?

I suggest you consider Acer next time when looking for a monitor.

      • I had an older Acer that never let me down as well. This one seems like a premium product compared to the old one though. It's great value for money at this price.

    • +1

I had the same reservations mate… but have no fear, I took the plunge and tried an Acer monitor 3 years ago (an OzBargain actually!) and its still going great and I use it every day.

If anything, I'd avoid Samsung… my 'other' monitor sucks the big one, and I've also got a Samsung LCD 32" TV in the kitchen that sucks to use. The TV guide on the Samsung is terrible- takes forever to load up! Oh, and the remote buttons arent in a logical spot (other than the volume and channels). Info, Back, TV guide… in weird spots.

    • Actually when it comes to budget monitors, Acer is the only brand I'd go with.

      I've owned about 4 Acer screens since 2003. AL511, G245H, V243HL and now my current 21:9 B296CL.
All have served me well, with zero dead pixels.

The G245H even though it was advertised as having a 5ms response time was actually 2ms; independently tested here:

  • Didn't take too long for IPS screens to come down in price… One of my 3 22 inch Chimei from 8 years ago has finally gotten a green line down the screen, tempting to upgrade!

  • Goddamn that's a good price. A pity my little computer desk can't fit 2x23' IPS panels. First world problems :S

  • Going on a holiday tomorrow, anyone know if this is a permanent price drop and whether they'll restock?

  • Would I be disappointed by getting this instead of a 24" at the same resolution? I know the pixel density would be better on this but the extra inch would look nice.

Would be used mainly for gaming.

  • +3

Someone talk me out of buying this please

    • +2

It's a 23" IPS 1080p screen. Great colour reproduction, glossy screen for dat nice sharp picture, has small bezels so you can have two or even three monitors without the bezels getting in the way.
Plus it only costs $156… That's like a quarter the price of a good phone.

      • Glossy… that's a big no no…

        • Agree. Glossy screen, no vesa mount and height adjustable stand are a deal killer for me.

        • Colours look so much more vivid on glossy screens for me.

    • Too late in my case.. Got one

    • This is OzBargain, so buy it :P

  • +1

would this be suited to connecting my laptop and using the Full HD screen for video and Photo editing? I currently have a 15.6inch Toshiba Qosmio f60?

    • Should work, your laptop's got an HDMI port, and the cable is provided with the monitor.

      • +1

I bought one. It came with DVI and VGA cables, no HDMI.

        • I found this quite strange, luckily I had my 10m HDMI cable from a previous deal.

        • It's quite normal to not have HDMI, even no DVI a lot of the times.
Good thing HDMI can be bought for $5.

        • I would think that HDMI would be the most popular choice for most people though.

  • Is there a way of hooking two of these up as a dual monitor setup to my MacBook Air? I've got a DVI adaptor but don't know how to get two screens or how to piggy back it ….

  • +1

Just ordered one…not sure whether I hate or love OzBargain right now lol, mixed feelings!!

  • I'm a bit concerned with the viewing angles on this monitor… don't really want anyone to uh…catch me looking at…OzBargain :P

    • +1

Look up 'Decreased Productivity' addon/plugin for Firefox and Chrome.

      Or Ghostzilla.

  • I have similar LG 24" IPS that was on ozbargain for $160 -180 mark 2 years ago and all I can say wow IPS….. Excellent for photography as the colours are very accurate…

  • Out of stock @ Clayton store.

  • Ordered at 9 or so this morning at Clayton and got an email saying it's out of stock. Ah well, was worth a shot.

  • I would not buy this item.
    Reason:
    Input Voltage 110 V AC
    220 V AC

Must remember that Australian voltage is 240V. Using 220V rated items they function for a while then die.
I bought many audio/video items (audios, amplifiers, video recorders, DVD players) previously from overseas (Singapore…) with 220V. They all die within 1-2 years, so now I stop purchasing unless it is rated 240V.

Hope this does not happen to you though.

    Cheers,

    • +5

The fact sheet on the website is incorrect, I looked at the power brick on mine and it says 100-240V AC so it should be fine.

  • Does anyone know how much warranty we get on these? And what is MSY's policy when it comes to dead/bright pixels on the screen?

  • Does anyone know what the measurement is, height x width x depth?

Edit: Sorry found it on Acer website. 40.4cm x 53.1cm x 17.3cm. But I'm not sure if the height of 40.4cm includes the stand or without?

I will never understand why 16:9 made it to monitors, laptops. Why would anyone watch movie/ TV on such small screens??
16:10 is way better for monitors.

    • +1

It's cost-effective for the manufacturer to make smaller 16:9 screens as opposed to 16:10 (which take up more pixels). Therefore the manufacturer tries to sell it off as being ideal to watch movies etc on, but in reality all they care about is their profit/expense ratio.
