  • This one only has Realtek Gigabit too,
No extra USB header inside (says a review)

  • Just a question re warranty, noticed it says 1year on the site, however ram generally has lifetime, the WD Blue 2 years and the actual NUC 3 years… Does this mean we get only 1yr across the board regardless - in which case I'm tempted to cancel my order, purchase from PCCG and get the additional cover for only around $50 extra for better peace of mind…

Okay Just clarified with them… Build of machine is 1 yr but individual components have warranty as provided by manufacturer.

  • Well folks, mine arrived yesterday (YAY)….

Booted it up, upgraded firmware (I think there is a bug in the network selection function in the latest bios as my monitor goes fully grey coloured and locks up - might need to try on different monitor), enabled Legacy BIOS and was able to install KVM virtualisation on it :)

Peaks at around 11 watts maximum with about 6.9 watts idle running windows 7 (under kvm) with kb/mouse disconnected…

Wish it had 16gb ram option on it but not as expensive as the next model up which offers dual dimm sockets.

    • What's the fan noise like? I would like to replace my current miniature PC (a FitPC 2i) it is a fanless Atom job - nowhere near the CPU power of this NUC but I really like the fact that it is silent.

I've set my fan on 30% lowest speed, 100% highest and I need to tweak it a bit because it seems to every so slightly speed up with no delay at the slighest of cpu load increases. I saw a fan responsiveness type setting in the bios I'll need to investigate in due season. Noise wise its like a very very quiet laptop - (it's currently 40 cm away from me with the exhaust facing forward and not back)…

If you're worried about fan noise, its a very pleasant noise from a noise perspective and as someone who is quite pedantic about noise levels as well, I'm pleased its not loud like I read some of the other reviews of other models mentioned (its no i3 or i5 which generate far more heat)..

The hard drive does however have a rather aggressive shutdown feature (after 8 seconds of idle it spins down).. Fortunately the KVM (proxmox) seems to tell the drive to disable sleep mode so it never spins down when running…

I believe its possible to set the fan speed to 0% meaning it will switch off totally when not needed BUT I don't want to cool the little beast and as it sucks air over the hard drive when cooling it means the hd has some air flow around it.

        Hope that helps.

Actually now that I think about it, the 2.5" WD drive is making more noise than the fan so if you install an SSD it will probably be near silent if the cpu fan is set to a low spinning rate…

        • Cheers mate, thanks for the detailed response, or should I say Damn you! now I'm gonna have to buy one.
