    • I'm interested in this and also .flac playback ability

    • Presuming it's the same feature set as the 2013 Bravias:

      • MP4, AVI, and MKV containers all work (including chapters and embedded SRT subs in MKV)
      • H.264 (aka AVC), VC-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4/XviD/etc. video codecs all work.
      • AAC, AC3 and DTS, and MP3 audio codecs all work (not DTS-HD or TrueHD, and not FLAC)
      • It has flac

New model BDP-S5200 highlights and specifications:

    http://store.sony.com/sony-blu-ray-disc-player-with-3d-and-w…

    • Wow, Sony dropped SACD in the new model, can only read the CD part now.

  • Can someone help please: I've plasma tv without wifi support, with this blueray player, would I be able to play contents from my laptop wirelessly on TV using this blue-ray player. Thanks in anticipation for sharing your knowledge.

    • Should be via DLNA, as long as your laptop can access wifi.

    • yes, just install a DLNA server on your laptop.

    • Install Serviio on your laptop.

  • Thanks OP.

  • Thanks for this. Not sure why I bought one, but I did. Already have more bluray players then I need. But this is by far the best of the $99 ones.

  • can anyone share the 30$ e-vouchers? thanks.

    • once an e-coupon is shared, it will be used many times, as many as possible. Sony might detect this and starts their witch hunt for abuse of e-coupon, and most likely cancel all orders with multiple use of the same e-coupon. The only key to success is moderation for all e-coupon owners.

16GB Sony SD card class 4 for $5 is quite a bargain, especially if purchased multiple times, all with free shipping.

I only used my e-coupon once, just to be on the safe side, so they deliver my new 3d blu-ray player:D

Thanks OP. Managed to price match at JB Hifi and used my ozbargain stockland mall gift cards to pay.

  • If you don't own an Android device or not planning on buying one in the future you can skip this comment.

I have a slight case of buyer's remorse having just realised that this player doesn't support Miracast, which is very important to me. Panasonic blu-ray players were the first ones and the only ones in the 2013 line-up to implement it. Sony is only introducing it this year. Even my WDTV Live Steaming media player, which has had a ton of firmware updates doesn't support it.

Therefore, I have actually been waiting for Panasonic DMP-BDT230, another highly rated model from last year (and the cheapest player with Miracast support), to get discontinued so I could snap it up for a similar price, but the Sony was cheaper and offered SACD support. I have just noticed that the Panasonic has dropped to $124 at the Good Guys.
It's interesting how few reviewers understood the significance of Panasonic's players introducing Miracasst last year. Especially, when blu-ray players of different brands have few distinguishable features these days. Perhaps the majority of the reviewers are iOS users? I happen to think Miracast is a pretty big deal.

    • Yes, new model BDP-S5200 supports Miracast.

    • Just so you know, I have a Panasonic player, that's supposed to support Miracast - and it's no go with the Nexus 5 (reboot). The Nexus7 (2013) can connect/work with it, but the data rate is disappointing (jerky).

So I wouldn't be making your decisions on the basis of that functionality.

      • Thanks, you actually made me feel better. Yes, Miracast is supposed to work with any device running 4.2 or greater, so, in theory should work with any Nexus device. If I had paid extra for a Panasonic with Miracast and it didn't work, I'd seriously consider returning it, although their players are supposed to be very good in their own right.

  • Price matched in Good Guys.

This device failed to play any x264 encoded MKV file I Have

    • My apology.

It plays x264 mkv file. Need to choose USB device under Video - I might choose under photo previously.

PQ is ok but seems not as good as WDTV live.

Support srt subtitle file but seems not Asian character set.

  • Sorry to hear that, I'd say this should be not be an issue in this day an age. Good thing that my Panasonic plasma and the WDTV Live Streaming play these with no problem.

I understand it has a Plex app - have you tried playing your MKV's with Plex?

  • Jb hifi does not price match, sony centre does not price match, it's funny.

Luckily I did not get it, all the mkv I have are x246

    • You'd be suprised that It might actually work on this player.

Often companies will list a whole heap of "tested" formats.
However it is often that another format will work since they usually use "generic" software which supports a whole heap of formats.

Edit: The person above seems to have played it fine.

  • Thanks OP. I got one from HN price matched:)

  • Btw: friends use these players for us streaming services, vudu netflix, amazon,. All the range of 2013 sony and some 2012 players will do it through unblock-us. Pretty easy but there is one known issue with these players. Sometimes the streamings apps become unavailable. They usually get through this by using one of the alternative unblock-us DNS server addresses.

Overall good rating from my 4 mates.

    • Is this as easy to use for Netflix as the Roku? I had decided on the roku until I discovered that the Sony Blu Ray players also can be configured to do this.

  • Thanks op. I was looking for blu ray player and finally found one.

  • I just tried Hulu Plus on this player, it couldn't play smoothly just "loading" from time to time. I am a bit far from the exchange, so the speed i got isn't great: 3.33Mbps download, 0.56Mbps upload. But the speed might not be the reason for this issue. Anyone else tried Hulu Plus on this and how it goes?

  • Got this player this morning but I can't connect this player to SEN. I tried both wired and wireless connection but still can't connect to the SEN server. Anyone know what is the problem?

    • +2

Found out the problem. Make sure you set the prImary DNS manually to 8.8.8.8.

Love this player and it is an excellent CD player!

  • expired price back to $169

  • Deal finished? Clicked on the link and its $169.00 with no option to buy/add to cart?

    • Guess they ran out of stock.

It was fun while it lasted… nothing ever lasts on Ozbargain.
Prob broden'd by somebody so they can eBay it.

  • +1

Can anybody upload the receipts from price matches - or list the store locations that they price matched at? Have had no luck at jb, hn, gg in Parramatta/Liverpool area.

    • I think its a little too late now for price matches, as the original site is now changed to reflect old price not $99.

  • +1

I emailed Sony about their error in charging people shipping who used discount card. Well, someone got back to me and said they will refund the shipping. So this player will in the end cost me under $70!!

  • I made the payment using my ANZ debit card linked with my Savings account and have just received an email from Sony saying Payment details are not complete and they need the "Bank Authorisation ID number" to process the order. Does anyone know what exactly is that ?

  • How can they run out of stock, yet still show it on the website to purchase but at the original price.

    • It's not actually available for sale.

    • deal url is product page - item no longer available for purchase from sony online store but might be in stock elsewhere :(

  • Anybody received their unit from Sony yet?

Mine says got shipped on Monday, with expected delivery of tuesday. But never arrived.
Checked the status and it is still: Shipment Consigned.

    • Mine says it's out for delivery as of an hour ago. So expecting it today.

I really like the DHL site, probably the best of the kind, with the map and everything.

Hopefully you'll get yours soon. I'm still waiting for the Audio Technica headphones from Gadgets Boutique that shipped on 31/01.

      • +1

Haha, the DHL map isn't actually dynamic, it just shows where it was sent from and to.
The actual DHL truck isn't moving and you aren't actually tracking where your parcel is actually at.

Sort of a useless feature imo when Google Maps can easily do the same.

Mine sat on Shipment Consigned then suddenly this morning it was "Out for delivery" and 1 hr later was delivered.
It was dispatched on Monday 3PM.

Funny though, I tried calling DHL Supply Chain (logistics that they use), they said they haven't even received the item, and that they weren't even given the frieght yet.

Sigh, need to get their act together.

Now to try to get my shipping refunded…

        • Good point regarding the maps. Upon a closer inspection the map is indeed static.

Btw, I got mine delivered this morning.

  • Mine said despatch complete with tracking number grey out, not sure what that mean.

    • Err. Same. Still waiting for the delivery…

      • I have just received mine.

      • Yeah nevermind. Just received mine too.

  • someone already trying to make some profit from his $69 purchase:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SONY-3D-WI-FI-BLURAY-PLAYER-BDP-S…

    • Lol not everyone has the Multi use $30 coupon I guess, still some profit if his bids go higher :)

      • probably easier to make profit out of the memory card or usb stick or the camera bags. mix & match the order will come up to less than $40, minus the $30 e-coupon, go figure, a bag and sd card for $6.

  • Anybody found something on the web for region free dvd using Harmony Remote or PC IR?

    • +1

Confirmed that this one is actually dvd region free, although on the unit it says region 4.

Cannot confirm Bluray Region Free, because I don't have any region bluray.

  • Cant access the internet contents and apps through the wireless router but works when wired directly from the modem. Any help?

    • sounds like NAT / Firewall on Router is blocking it.
Might need to set up uPNP which allows auto management and allocation of ports so the data can get passed through.

      • Can browse web pages but cant access the apps (Router is Western digital MynetN750)

    • @doctorwatson Are you saying the Apps don't appear when connected via wireless or are you are not able to run the Apps?

      • I am not able to run the app, it times out

        • OK. Sorry, I have not come across this problem before so I won't be of any help. Have you tried a factory reset?

        • I did but doesnt help, When I have a wired connection all is fine, but when i connect wirelessly I cant open the apps. How will I change the DNS when I setup the wireless connection? I dont see any option

        • You have to manually set up your internet connection. This can be done for either a wired connection or a wireless connection.

  • +1

Hope everybody got their Bluray players.

Anybody manage to get a shipping refund for $30 coupons from Sony?

EDIT: Just noticed on my credit card statement, that they refunded me the shipping… Way to go Sony!! $69 for BR player!

    • i got many stuff for under $10 thanks to the multiple use of $30 e-coupon. should I get more and sell on ebay? doesn't look like sony website can be broden'd.
