Great lens for the money. Lowest price for Amazon AU perhaps. I bought it for $238.43 in August last year from Amazon UK.

  • +1

I bought mine from Amazon for $241 a few weeks ago (via Amazon UK).

    • +1

yeah i paid $225 from germany about 2 months ago. Its a good lense for the price
oops, $233, just checked. from same link as OP

      • so it was actually much cheaper before?

        • yep. others have mentioned other prices in here too at various points. for whatever reason Camels doesnt seem to have tracked it too well.

  • +1

I got mine in 2020 for $267 from Amazon. Great lens for the money. Its quite a nice all rounder if you don't have/want a zoom lens. By no means a pancake lens, but as small as most lens get for portability.

  • +2

great deal but I am after 85mm

    • +2

Get both and a 35 for Holy trinity

    • +1

Same same, so post a deal if you come across one !

  • +8

Good for the price and if using for photos but the autofocus motor is slow and old and LOUD and terrible for video

    • +4

      Fair. But it’s also $280.

    • +4

Just piping in to say if you’re a pro videographer this lens will frustrate you - the focus breathing is quite bad and because Sony lenses do lots of micro adjustments with focus throughout a shot, on a locked off tripod shot (eg a general talking headshot) you’ll get frustrating hyperactive focus breathing effects from time to time.

Overall, decent for the price though. Would still recommend to someone who wanted it, you just need to lock off to manual focus when possible.

      • +1

What would you recommend instead? Any non-GM recommendations?

        • +1

Ah gee. I wish I could be helpful here. For that price, size and with auto focus, nothing comes to mind, maybe there’s a suitable sigma or Samsung option.

Don’t get me wrong, my work bought this 50mm 1.8 and I use it all the time. Once it’s locked off in manual focus it’s acceptable. The focus breathing is just quite aggressive and jittery on a tripod shot in auto focus.
For 300 bucks it still might be the better option.

          • @Kayrhcp: Thanks mate. Agree the value proposition is incredible.

    • +1

Yes, I hear the Zeiss 55 is much better, but it's also more than twice three times the price. This does the job for me.

Great deal, but already have 50mm f1.2.

      Thanks for letting us know

      • +1

I also have one in case you were wondering.

    • +1

Whats your best photo with it?

    • I don't have one FYI

    • I thought I had one, but I was wrong. Sorry for the confusion.

  • Good deal. Was my first lens for a7iii to get a feel of things. Good balance of budget, features and performance.

  • Good lens I bought it for $208 from Amazon UK couple of years a go.

  • +1

Anyone paired this with a6000 series camera?

    • +1

It works for A6000 but you are paying for expensive glassware which you don't need. Plus no zoom in this lens, so you have to do all the hard work :)

      • +5

learning to use a prime lens is rewarding, but if you are not planning on going full frame it may be worth getting a cheaper APS-C sized 50mm, as this one when fitted on a APS-C sized sensor will have a 1.5X crop factor (75mm).

    • I got a APS-C version of 50mmf1.8 with my A6400, really good prime lens and great for travel too

      • Sigma 30mm?

    • if you want a 75mm equivalent after taing into account crop factor?

you can get an actual 50mm designed for APSC which is a bit more expensive iirc, but better lens for A6000. It depends if you'll ever go full frame or not.

For a 50mm equivalent on APSC, their 35mm lens is really good.

if im not mistaken the reviews on this isn't great

    • See's Amazon - 4.5/5 on 6,700 reviews. You might be mistaken

      • I very well might be

    • +1

It's always compared to the much more expensive lenses and comes up lacking, but in terms of "nifty fifty" lenses, this one is much better than canon one I used to use before I changed systems.

  • +1

Anyone have any perspectives on this vs the Zeiss 55mm 1.8? Yes I realise it's 3x the price, but would rather just buy once…

    • +4

Zeiss has an all metal build and better AF. Image quality is probably similar. The metal body feels nicer to handle but is quite delicate and easier to scratch that the polymer housing of the 50mm

    • +2

The Zeiss contrast wide open is amazing and build quality typical Zeiss. I will be selling mine soon as I shoot mostly telephoto.

    • +6

Zeiss has much better build quality, much much faster and quieter auto focus and most importantly amazing picture quality (beautiful creamy bokeh and amazing contrast & colours). This lens wins when it comes to value for money though. Let's just say, Zeiss lens is worth 3 times of this lens but it actually costs 4 times as much. Good thing is, you could find a used Zeiss for 2 times of this price if you look around. In that price range, I'll get the used Zeiss over this lens in a heartbeat.

    • I have the Zeiss they're not really comparable. The Zeiss is one of the sharpest lenses (even wide open) on the Sony eco system, has a metal build and has that amazing Zeiss micro contrast. Its strength (sharpness) is also its weakness as people think its too clean and clinical and has no character. I really like mine but best to check sample images on Flickr before taking the plunge.

    • +2

The former is designed for APS-C, the latter for full frame.

I had the 50mm years ago on my old APS-C, and I loved it as I was a total newbie to interchangeable lens cameras and had never seen bokeh before, except maybe by accident!

I have an A7C now, and love the 55mm as I was able to get it on a great sale + Amex cashback offer.

You may find this review helpful, though obviously it doesn't tell you anything about useability like AF speed - but the comments do. https://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2016/05/10/crazy-comparison-s…

    • +1

55mm 1.8 is a great lens, the only drawback is with onion ring on the bokeh, but I can accept that. You can easily find a used one on Ebay or FB market, and much cheaper than its RRP.

  • +3

I would prefer to buy a mint second hand 55/1.8 instead of buying this one.

    • +1

When you find one of those for anywhere near this price - let me know.

  • +2

    Has been $233.60 recently

  • Hanging out for decent deals on Fuji / X-mount gear
