Sounds too good to be true!

    • +18

It is true, we are not a commercial martial arts school. We are not devoted for the money but for the passion of teaching the art!

    • True little grasshopper…

    • We use to run free classes in Chinatown Melbourne, under Kung Fu Foundation over 3 years ago, which we stopped and changed to a different venue due to liability issues. It was under the foundation we as instructors taught voluntarily to the general public.

Same example applies when you have free tai chi classes in Federation Square in Melbourne. But ours is not Tai Chi but Kung Fu. If your a little skeptical about this do come along to our class so you know we are serious about giving out 1 year passes to the public.

  • How do you pay the rent and keep food on your plate Sensei?

    • +10

We have a few members who finish there trial paying for full membership as listed on the website $35 a month. They enjoyed training and continued long term. This is how the marketing goes for this offer, short term losses but maybe long term gains in the future. Cheers!

    • +20

      Si fu…. Not Sensei.

  • +3

Man I'd join up in a heartbeat if you were still in Chinatown.. nice effort however!

How much is it for the uniform , shoes , weapon use , gradings ?

    • +4

Uniform is $25 for Shirt, $20 for Pants and $5 for Sash. Photo of uniform, is specially designed with Gold Dragons in front and back of shirt, black Kung Fu pants and Black sash. http://jowgakuen.com.au/uniform.jpg

      • +1

        thanks for the info

    • +8

Weapons use is free, handle weapons with care. We have some of the most exotic and rare weapons we teach and use dating back from Shaolin, since our style of Kung Fu derived from Shaolin Temples, Hung Ga & Choy Ga style.

As to grading we dont have a bunch of sashes in all different colors as we are not a belt factory, every one wears a black belt, and progress based on completion of hand or weapon forms, structure and stance training. We have beginner, intermediate, advance and instructor level. Grading is organised by our Sifu, currently no cost is associated with grading, its more of the hard work and years of training a student progress to the next level! Sparring, light sparring, non-contact sparring, weapon sparring is also inclusive in our curriculum.

        • Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry. Kung fu is a Chinese martial art.

Very generous, I won't be signing up as I probably wouldn't be able to go to many classes, so i don't want to take someone else s opportunity.

I suggest ozbargainers think this one through and only do it if you will attend.

    • +1

Local kung fu class - think it through, only if you'll attend.

Udemy class - quick, lemme sign up, regardless that I'll never do it.

  • +4

Couldn't claim this if I wanted to, but just pointing out this is a great deal. Thank you for posting, rep.

  • +8

Even your $380 a year looks pretty cheap. Most schools will charge near a grand for a year.

    • +6

Definitely!! if you look at alot of commercial Wing Chun schools in the CBD they charge up to $140-$180 a month. We like to keep this very affordable, as well as keeping our quality of teaching high! But note we are not a Wing Chun school. We teach Jow Ga Kung Fu, so look up on YouTube what this style looks like, it might suit you! It's a very strong style with swift footwork. Different styles suit different people, its a short and long range style, both focus on stand up fighting techniques. We are the only school in Melbourne teaching Jow Ga style. Cheers!

    • i did karate couple of years ago and it was like $1300+, thats not the problem, the problem is I went less than 15 times. LOL

  • +3

Great deal, just signed up. I've been into various martial arts over the years, and always wanted to give Kung Fu a try. Thanks!

    • Cheers mate, looking forward to seeing you there next Saturday class, 11AM - 1PM @ The Space Dance Centre, Ballroom!!

  • +5

Ah if only this was nearby and for Muay Thai and BJJ. Been out of work for a while and haven't trained for 5 months.

What you're doing is great, +1 from me.

  • +2

Great offer, wish I had spare time to come along. +1

  • +2

Great Deal. However location and date/times don't suit me.
Hopefully others here can take advantage.
    Positive from me.

  • +3

Wonderful. I would join in a heartbeat if you were in Brisbane.

  • +1

Hmm.. Very tempting and its right around the corner from me!

  • +1

Would love to get in on this but Saturday mornings are out for me :-(

GL to everyone joining. And sweet deal from the rep!

  • +7

    非常感謝

Hang on, there was no call for that sort of language.

    • Looks great. I signed up online when there about 29 places left but I didn't get a confirmation email or anything. How will I know if I secured a place or not?

      • +2

There is no confirmation email, many sign up, but it's those ones who actually turn up gets the spots first. People may sign up but never turn up. But we have your signups ordered so you will get your place for sure!

        • Fantastic can't wait and thanks for the amazing offer.

  • +1

do you do much in the way of physical sparring?

    • +1

Yes, once you get close to finishing beginners level, there is sparring. But even at beginners level there is non-contact sparring, 1-2 step sparring, old man sparring, and light sparring. Cheers!

    • -1

I knew what the video was going to be even b4 I clicked the link ;-)

  • +4

Well done mate. I hope it translates into some lifelong students for you so you can keep the style alive. Really nice to see. All the best Sifu.

    • Cheers brother!!

      • +3

Actually, I've been teaching Shaolin five ancestors style for over 25 years here in Adelaide. Fees are $70 for 3 months. Yes, cheap. But we don't want to see our lineage end either.

        Good luck again!

  • Si Fu, can you teach me how to be like water moving its way through cracks?

  • +1

    $35 a month is cheap!!! I pay $75 a month.

  • +2

Thank you very much for this offer, I've signed up and now hoping I don't get given a work shift this Saturday.

    • +3

I suggest ozbargainers think this one through and only do it if you will attend.

      • He may mean he'll be missing out on work ;-)

    • +1

Definitely think it through if you are able to attend. Since the venue can fit around 50-60 people, but that does not mean we will accept that many people, only 30-40 people is the limit. As the quality of teaching depreciates as the more people per class, we have limited amounts of instructors only. But we will definitely introduce a 2nd class in the future to keep up. Cheers!

      • +1

yes dont be an ass and sign up and dont turn up… martial arts is a long term commitment shame I see quite a few that cant handle commitment and a bit of hard work Ive doing it for 3 years now :) (not kung fu)

        • My shifts change every week, I can't know when I'll work. I'll definitely go if I don't get a Saturday shift. I only get one or two days a week of work, which can be any day of the week. If I get a Saturday shift I'll be doing everything to swap with someone working on Sunday so I can go.

      • Introduce the second class in Sydney, and bring balance back to the universe.
Cant let Melbourne Ozbargainers get too much of an unfair advantage… otherwise their mouse clicking speed and accuracy could cost me the next big promo on pinchme

  • +1

great work on offering something like to the people of melbourne.. do you have a contact for something along similar lines in brisbane? cheers.

  • +1

There's a school in Brisbane also teach Jow Ga Kung Fu, check out http://www.lamtuluankungfu.com/

  • +1

Just wondering, do we have to enrol on the website every class? Or does reserving our spot once mean for the whole year?

I saw the offer ending 24th February, 2014, so I presume it's for the whole year once we enrol once on the site?

    • +1

Once reserved its the whole year!

      • +1

Awesome, thanks for the fast reply!!

  • I challenge your master to a fight. Winner takes over the students to train in my style of fighting.. the Raging Kangaroo.

    • +9

Hi R3XNebular our master is nearly 80 years old he wont be as fit as he use to be, but you can challenge any of our instructors to a sparring match, Cheers!

    • +4

my style of fighting.. the Raging Kangaroo.

More formally known as Jeet Kune Roo, the "way of the intercepting paw".

  • This is probably the best deal ever.
Not only can you get fit.
You can learn a way to fight, earn some self esteem.
McSlurry will not be on your menu. (when you realise that crap food is not good for you)
    Its free.

Good on you kungfufoundation, a great deal.
Do you take anyone over (cough) 45?

  • +8

With ethics like yours, if you were local to me I would pay to train with you guys…I'm so sick of the greed that's permeated martial arts in recent years, your attitude is really refreshing! :)

    • -4

      like to know of similar groups in sydney thank you;

we live in a society of greed
      that is our PM's creed
      every business rips off
      the poor mugs of oz

without charging fees such teachers might have to starve.
these arts were valued in china
so people used to pay for the depth and cumltural immersion

it is shallow to criticise any groups for charging money in a materialistic society where they could not live and function with dignity otherwise.

I pay rip off fees to real estate salesmen in many guises
even my dentist could be one
      my surgeon
but they all have their clubs where they restrict memberships so they can charge huge fees.

the PMs of our land lie in bed with these businesses and destroy public sevices so that mug can think they are getting off cheap

      until they have to pay.

I would not attack or denigrate any groups which ahve tosurvive in this savage jungle of money talks

      • +1

That was a crap poem! It didn't even rhyme

  • Hey man. I signed up but now I think that I won't be able to make it to most of the classes because its a 45 minute drive for me and I don't even have a car (Learners at the moment). So I was hoping you can take me off the list to open up a spot for someone who will actually rock up.

    • +1

No worries, we actually accepted more then advertised. We know a certain amount of people wont turn up so those extra 10-20 signup on top of our limit should hope to even things up. Cheers for letting us know, All the best!

      • Sifu

I missed out on the deal, but I still may be interested. How often are classes run? I would wish to maximise my training. My main interest is in weapons training and my interest is in learning the Art rather than practicing only to be graded.

        Brant

  • I did Hap Ki Do for about 4 years, which was $75 a month. So even if you have to pay for this it's still very cheap.

  • I think this is a wonderful deal and I hope you get a lot of good leads out of that. It looks like a great style for building athleticism, coordination, self confidence, and overall self-esteem. Good luck in the future with this.

  • Damn. Too late. If any spots open up please let me know!

  • any spots left? would like to make a commitment into training
never tried Kung Fu classes (was thinking of trying Wing Chun)
bur this Jow Ga style would be nice :-)

  • Aww any spots left?

  • OP I'd really like to join and I am very committed.
If any spots open up please let me know!
Are you still taking students on payment?

  • +1
