Agreed that I can't see much reason this model would be worth a significant premium to the cheap versions on ebay etc.
My friend got a cheap wireless speaker for her phone similar to this:

It works surprisingly well, with pretty clear sound at low volumes.
I was given one of these too. Was pretty impressed. Sound quality is slightly inferior though and not as compact.
With the Kai you can daisy chain with other X - mini speakers.

I have one already, but it didn't survive my daughters relentless onslaught. Was waiting for it to go on sale.
For the Rrp, it ain't worth it, but at this price, it's good value.
These sound pretty good. I have a Bose soundlink mini which is quite portable, but this thing is un - noticeable in a bag.
Good for speaker phone too.
Bass Burger (very similar design, been around for years) are about $30 delivered from a few different sellers on ebay.
I can't compare quality, but not worth $40 IMO.
The Logitech Mini Boom is a good product when available for $70-$80
