        This is nuts.

        • love cheap screws

        • +1

Doesn't get any funnier by repeating it.

  • +2

+1 for this alone: "Went to Bunnings over the weekend only to be overwhelmed by prices on measely screws…."

but just be aware, some of the screws that you will buy will have a very soft head and will strip as soon as you try screw them…

(ordinarily that's not a problem but I hate it when my hardware is soft)

    • +1

Thanks wisc.. Hopefully these will be good (relying on my experience with ALDI products.. mostly). Otherwise I love their Satisfaction guaranteed return policy..

      • +2

LoL, I bought one of there 18 Volt drills and stripped the gears on the first pine sleeper I drilled…
        this was not confidence building…

        • +1

I have an Aldi 18V drill that is approximately 3 years old. I have used it regularly and at times abused it and still going strong so I guess like ALL manufactured goods out of a batch there will be some duds.

Re the screw packs, I have purchased these in the past and have had no problems at all, great value.

        • Try drill a thick pine sleeper….on second thoughts don't its out of warantee….

    • +3

(ordinarily that's not a problem but I hate it when my hardware is soft)

You'll find the more you screw the less of a problem that will be.

      • +1

I have a screwer that has lifetime guarantee !!

        • +1

All you lads sounds like a real handyman. You guys will just screw anything.

        • +2

A man who is handy usually won't be screwing anything.

  • Is this deal only for the coming Saturday?

    • Until they run out i guess…

    • +1

Yeah, I believe until stocks last.. which in many cases for Aldi is the first 2 hours :p

  • +2

Remember people, cheap screws ain't always the best. (Insert dirty mind here)

    • 'please put $50 under the door to get screwed'

  • +6

If these screws are as good as the drill bits I previously have bought ( and thrown away ) from Aldi, then I reccomend not to use them for using them on anything you value. So it's a no for me on the screws. Maybe a yes on the storage boxes

    • +8

Agreed. I bought some screws & nails from Aldi last year & they appeared to be made of cheese…I would also be extremely wary.

      • +4

Lol, I'd love to see your reaction as you open the packet of screws and there was cheese.

        • I'd have actually been happier with a box of cheddar. :)

      • I bought some screws two years ago (approx?) and actually, they are pretty good. OTOH the drill bits I purchased at about the same time are pretty one-time-use.

And the 3 year old 18V Aldi cordless drill now has a broken chuck - probably from applying too much pressure trying to drill with poor quality Aldi drills ?? :-)

    • oh.. I would think they would also be the same company.. Work Zone. Which doent look good then.. :( willing to tae the risk at this price though..

      • The price isn't just the $5, it's the replacement cost of whatever just fell over because the head snapped off.

        Aldi quality nails? Pass

      • Work Zone is an Aldi brand not a manufacturer. Aldi contract various suppliers at any one time to manufacture under their brands. So there is no guarantee that the same manufacturer makes the work zone gear from one year to the next and between items under the brand.

        • All the more reason to steer clear of Aldi nails

  • +2

I got screwed last year. I think I will abstain this time.

  • +3

Can't say for Aldi screws but cheap screws usually get screwed by powered drill. More expensive screws is tougher.

  • +2

Agree with expensive Bunnings screw prices comments. Applies to bolts too!

    • Yeah, they have teensy, pricey packs for handymen and huge packs for tradies for not a lot more… but if you're only doing one job, no need for the big pack, the small one is slightly cheaper per pack (just 20x more per item).

      So you're screwed.

      • -1

        ebay…

        • postage…

        • postage…

          screw that…

  • They always seem to have plenty of these left over and at a reduced price a few weeks later.

  • First kmart, now Aldi.

Cheap screws - who did it better?

  • +2

Screws are actually cheaper at the weekend markets. They charge by the kilo…(at my local market anyway).

    • +2

So how much would a 50 kg made in China cost compared to a 90kg made in Australia.

    • +2

Agreed. Best deals for screws are the weekend markets. Brand name stuff per kg, quite cheap.

  • -2

Screw that! I'll just go to Bunnings.

  • +4

Plenty of people think a screw is a screw so it's little wonder they end up with burred heads and twisted shafts. Others have poor technique and forget the foreplay (eg pre-drilling) which invariably leads to problems such as cracking, splitting and stripping. These screws are for MDF and plasterboard, use them for their advertised purpose and you should have no troubles with your repair or erection.

    • Note with the exception of the drywall screws these are not the standard phillips head screws, they are PZ2, which are slightly different.

Using Phillips drivers are ok, except when it comes towards the end when the pressure on the screw could cause the head to be stripped.

  • What price would you normally pay for a screw?

  • +1

There's a Vietnamese bloke at the Sunday Market in Thomastown that sells a variety of screws by the kilo. I believe the price is $8-10/kg. Quality of screws is pretty much identical to what you'd buy from Bunnings.

  • That's great, I need some screws…oh that didn't come out right, did it?

  • As long as they don't snap when driving them into 40 year old hardwood studs like 80% of mine did last weekend…..Masters brand screws :(

    • Haha… Aldi brand screws will be worse!
