  • +2

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…

if they didnt change the price

    • +2

It's our duty to deplete Officeworks stock before DSE so there is enough to go around, also if Officeworks don't pricematch it already by tommorow, you get an extra 5% off, and if you have ING you get 2%/5% back as long as you split the first transaction as $99.99 (and put the rest on Savings to be honest with ING)

  • It isn't $139 until tomorrow.
    See the "22/02/2014 - 23/02/2014 (Starts Tomorrow)" above…

  • -1

well if you click the dse catalogue it actually lists the price at $159 so how did op get $139?

  • +2

    Or $110 delivered from Amazon.

    • +4

      US $110 , around AU $120
if you can wait, it worth saving $20

I feel skeptical of buying Hard Disks online as HDDs are so fragile. With retail (I would hope that) their supply chain has fragile items in mind when they are carrying a case load of HDDs. They also provide warranty onsite so there is no question of 'damage during shipping' & return postage. That said the 2.5" drives are much more resilient than 3.5"

      • +1

Can you imagine a 8Tb going through the post and being dropped a dozen times? Hard drives I have had delivered in the past had no bubble wrap, just the cardboard box they came in.

  • +1

Officeworks pricematch would come down to $132.05 I think… only $10 more than Amazon, and you get it now…

    • for me prefer to deal with amazon. never had problem with them great service. the only thing sometimes bother me the waiting

  • Toshiba laptop drives are incredible unreliable, see them die almost on a weekly basis when installed in Toshiba laptops.

    • ive had the 1.5tb version of this for over a year now and not once have a had a problem, hopefully it stays that way

      • Suggest you check it for bad sectors, which is the way most of them go.

  • How's Hitachi compared to WD Element?
They are at the same price currently in MSY

  • -3

Sorry if this is an ignorant question… but shouldn't these be a lot cheaper by now?

I was under the impression that consumers are moving to cloud storage and there's been so many freebies and great deals when it comes to cloud. I can definitely appreciate the physical storage (I personally prefer it), but I would assume that the market has all but collapsed in recent years.

Is this a last ditch attempt to keep the prices for physical storage high or is there really still a genuine demand at these prices?

    • +2

Cloud storage at average Aussie broadband speeds is problematic for the sort of large files (movies, video), that people typically store on portable drives, especially if they want to be able to connect direct to a USB-capable TV for replay.

    • I was under the impression that consumers are moving to cloud storage

Come back in about 30 years time and that'll be a viable option (when have FTTP, 1 Petabyte SSDs for the same price as this external HDD and Cloud Storage websites that actually friggin' work). Anyone who cares about performance, security, privacy, reliability and consumer rights; i.e. anyone that's not an apocalyptic cretin, will stick to HDDs.

but I would assume that the market has all but collapsed in recent years.

I guess Western Digital, Seagate, Kingston, Crucial, et al didn't get that memo because they're still making tens of billions of dollars in profit.

and there's been so many freebies and great deals when it comes to cloud.

Have you got a dog in this fight or something? Mediafire Rep?

Dont buy this portable hard drive brand!!
    Lots of problems:
    1. Very slow in reading and writing
    2. Failed in less then a year.
    3. mine was supposed to be 1.5TB but it was 1.32TB.

I replaced it from dick smith with a Seagate 1TB with 3 years warranty.

    • +2

I've got the 1TB version of the Toshiba drive and they've been rock solid. In regards to your issues:
      1. Over a USB 3 connection? Some numbers please…
      2. This same model?
      3. All HDDs are the same. HDD manufacturers calculate 1TB as 1000GB, whereas Windows calculates 1TB as 1024GB so you won't get the same amount of storage as advertised.

      • +2

Amazed people still dont know the 1024 thing.

        • What's more is Mac OS X now counts 1 MB as 1,000 instead of 1,024. So a drive connected to Mac will have different size than when connected to Windows or Linux. But the customer will think less cheated when they use a Mac. It's a weird situation.

        • -5

I do know the 1024 thing and i can give you lecturers about it. I am a software engineer.

I only tried to give advice based on my personal experience but no one cares so take it or leave it. don't pretend you are knowledgeable.

    • Why not? Where are the lots of problems you mentioned?

I have two of the 2TB USB 3.0 drives that I purchased late last year from Amazon (Black Friday sales) for USD $84.99 each plus USD $10 shipping and I regret not buying a few more at that price.

      1. They are very fast in reading and writing and perform around the same as my matching Western Digital drives.
      2. They haven't failed yet.
      3. Serious? With that comment you've destroyed any credibility your recommendation to not purchase Toshiba drives had.

Toshiba have really good reliability but like all products they have failures, if you don't back up your hard drive (external or internal) and flash drives it's only a matter of time before you loose all your data.

I recommend the Toshiba drives, they work and they're a good price.

      • "Toshiba have really good reliability"

No they don't, you just bought them a couple of months ago so you haven't got a clue yet of what you are in for.

I can see your desperation in trying to defend the purchase of a really shitty brand.

Toshiba of today is not the brand they were 10 years ago, or even 5 years. They are garbage.

        • +1

Reliability information is available for every manufacturer online, I suggest you look at Toshibas reliability before you rubbish on about something you have no idea about. Also check out the reviews on Amazon spread across a number of years on this model - few problems with drives failing.

    • +1

Peers, kkllaa's comment is not too far from the truth, look at the reviews for this drive in Toshiba's own website, 1 star rating out of five, people with all sorts of issues, bad sectors amongst them which means yes, some may see the drive to not be quite 2.0 TB, not everyone knows how to check for bad sectors etc, so for many definitely not rock solid.
I own one and at times my Mac does not read it, plug out and in, then OK. I'm thinking of buying the seagate posted earlier for $99.00!1.5tb to back this up just in case.

      • +1

        That is a DIFFERENT MODEL!

  • For those who may not like Toshiba, the WD 2TB 2.5" Elements USB 3.0 drive is also $139 @ MSY: http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=11591

May not be able to price match this one at OW though as the model #'s look different despite being the same product. http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…

  • It could've been bought on 13 and 14 of February for $126.65 (after 15% Valentine's Day discount).
    So for $139 - it's not a bargain.

  • Price beaten by Prospect SA OW $132.05 at 10:20 am today.

  • just price matched it in ringwood vic ow $132.05 =)

  • Any chance of some speed test numbers over USB3 ?

  • +2

I went to the store in Highpoint (Vic) where it was labelled as $159 and scanned at $149. I told the guy the website said $139 but he said it must be an online-only deal. I went to MSY and got the WD Elements 2TB for $139.
The OP's link doesn't say online-only but the dse website page does:
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/usb-hard-drives/discover-one-of-…

    • The elements drive that you bought - does it look like the one on officework's site or is it simply the 2.5" version of the old external elements (with the logo in the middle)?

  • Long time lurker, first time poster

I managed to price match at OW now gotten two faulty drives :(
Brought one yesterday and it failed, took it back and got a replacement today and that has also failed :(

    Third times the charm?

    • "Failed" means what exactly? Are you connecting to a Windows 7/8 PC or an Apple Mac? Is the connection to a USB 3.0 port?

    • What's wrong with it though? If two of them 'failed' then it might be a problem with your computer rather than the hard drives…

      • Using win8 on a PC connected using USB3

Yesterday's drive write speed (trying different ports & cables) topped out at 2mb per second or sometimes struggling to write 1mb per sec. Drive made a clicking sound

Today's drive same deal. Run HD Tune came up with 98% bad sectors

        • Thanks for the clarification - that definitely sounds like they were both duds. Maybe a carton of them got dropped while in transit.

  • Bought. My 2TB external is almost running out of space! good timing on this :)
