Philips Fidelio SoundSphere Airplay Speakers $399.95 Delivered from OO.com.au

40

Normally sell for $999 from Apple or $795 from Hong Kong on ebay.

Unique in design, the Philips Fidelio SoundSphere Docking Speakers are sure to make a lasting impression. The SoundSpehere technologies produce a natural, deeper and wider sound while FullSound and SoundCurve produce rich and powerful audio. The Bass-reflex element also accounts for deep, tight bass reproduction, all through thumping 2 x 50W RMS total power output.

Fidelio SoundSphere speakers feature unique tweeters. Released from the traditional speaker boxes, the tweeters are free to deliver sound in all directions. The outcome is a very natural sound, with deeper and wider sound stage.

Stream your favourite iTunes with AirPlay or play from your iPhone, iPod or iPad and the Aux-in allows for easy connection to almost any electronic device. The 30-pin docking cradle also allows you to charge your Apple device while the SoundStudio app puts you in complete control of the audio settings.

Without having to deal with wires or controls, and without having to compromise on sound quality, the Philips DS9800W Fidelio SoundSphere Docking Speakers are the perfect solution in gaining prestige audio reproduction!

Some reviews from the apple site:

    • I bought these speakers in mid 2012. The airplay is not up to Apple standards so I needed to install a new base station nearby to get connectivity. Sound quality and appearance were great when it was working. However It needed frequent rebooting to keep it connected. Eventually would not reboot and Philips advice was that it must go for service. The forums suggest this is an all to common occurrence with this product - sufficiently common that the forum topic on their website has now been locked off to prevent further comment . Philips service has been quite unsatisfactory. The support people are overseas and do not know the local situation. They contract service out and do not even seem to know whether the contractors they employ are still in business - they sent me to one that had disappeared 6 months ago. All in all an unsatisfactory consumer experience.

    • I bought this stuff 4 months ago, and seriously I've been struggling with its basic functionality issue since then. I admit I love its sound(when it works), that's the only reason I didn't choose to return it. It's connectivity is really bad, and very unstable. If you let it standby for several hours, I can tell u it'll 100% die and totally stop functioning until u reboot it. Check out Philips' official support forum, many people report this issue, but they only give a workaround firmware, and no update since April this year.

    • Let's start with the cons, and there really is only one, it's called airplay.
I have used 9800 speakers for coming up to 6 months and have tried every way possible to improve connectivity - all to no avail. Sound constantly drops out to the point of being infuriating - and it doesn't matter whether iPhone, iPad, iTunes, or radio streaming, all result in the same dropped signal. Apple and Philips really need to get their collective act together, otherwise they will continue to sell a product that is not fit for purpose.
The pros? Beautiful design and construction. Excellent sound when they work.
Bottom line - spend your hard-earned money elsewhere unless you are in the market for expensive ornaments.

Looks like connectivity is a common issue. Do your research before you go throwing your money away! ;)

Thanks, I will stick with my plan to buy sonos

There seems to be a number of reviews & forums stating they sound great but that they stop working within a matter of months producing a blinking red light - warranty repair then becomes a major issue.
    Be warned BEFORE you buy…

  • Sensitivity: 85dB/m/W

That is inefficient. You would need a pair of Krell monoblocs to make this thing go loud but then you would blow it up.

    Normally $999 and no bluetooth?!

That's crazy. What if you upgrade to a non-Apple product, or your friend wants to play his new music for you?

What if Apple changed the Airtunes protocol or the proprietary connector?

Seriously, I suppose you could add a bluetooth A2DP receiver to the AUX input, and use most modern phones etc (incl current iphone). Not elegant, but if the price is right …

    • UPGRADE to a non-Apple product? Impossibru!

    • Bluetooth audio is compressed and sound quality not as good as Airplay. I would forget about it at this price range if you are into sound quality. I bought a Pioneer A4 speaker (from Ozbargain a while back for $250 down from $500) which supports Airplay and DLNA streaming so is compatible with most Apple/Android/Windows devices. Sound quality is excellent.

      See:

      http://hometheaterreview.com/bluetooth-airplay-dlna-whats-th…

      • It does DLNA? thanks - I did not see that above or on the linked OO page.

You are wrong about Bluetooth though. The basic codec used is SBC, which is good, but not audiophile grade. The article you link says iPhone does not support high-quality aptX codec, but fails to mention that it supports AAC over bluetooth. ie iPhone just sends the raw file from iTunes, utterly lossless.

So long as the speakers support aptX and AAC, bluetooth is as good as anything.
