Jaycar DIY JV-60 Vifa Speaker Kit for $374 (RRP $700+) - Instore Only & Low Stock!!

150

For those in the market for a very decent set of speakers and don't mind a bit of DIY assembly then here's probably your last chance to grab the popular JV-60 kit from Jaycar and for an amazing price to boot but please beware that these have been on clearance for a while now so you'll need to be prepared to visit a few stores to get the two kits required.

The JV-60 Kit was originally developed by Jaycar back in the early/mid 90s using high quality Danish Vifa Woofers & Tweeters and included a quality Crossover and all the other bit & pieces required for the normal person to build their own high quality tower speakers with just a screwdriver and without needing to know anything much about electronics. You could either build your own cabinet from plans or just buy them prebuilt and I personally helped many friends build them back in the day and most are still using and enjoying them 15+ years later. The cabinets are large 'tower' type floorstanding speakers so they may not look too sleek in the average modern home nor will they have a high WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) but the sound reproduction quality easily makes up for this believe me. Jaycar re-released this kit a few years ago with slightly 'better' cabinets but all-in-all they're still the same rock solid high quality speakers capable of producing very high quality audio for a fraction of the price of branded speakers costing well into the thousands. Jaycar have now discontinued them so the remaining stock has been reduced to clear.

I wont crap on too much further but if you're keen I recommend you call around a few of your local Jaycar stores to get what's required. You will need:

1 x CS2560 - $225.00
This is the Component Pack including the Woofers, Tweeters, Crossovers, Ports, Terminals and all other internal components required to build a stereo pair of speakers. This is the clearance price (down from about $500) and this item no longer exists on the Jaycar website however I've found details of it elsewhere: http://www.fishpond.com.au/Electronics/JV60-65-3-Way-Speaker…
1 x CS2562 - $149.00
This is the pre-built Cabinet Pack consisting of a pair of Cabinets ready for you to start screwing stuff into. These are still on the Jaycar site: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=CS2562

Hundreds if not thousands of these kits have been built across the country and there are many satisfied customers so Googling JV-60 should reveal a bit of info but here's a good starting place: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1944805 Assembly is easy enough using just a standard Phillips screwdriver however a bit of light soldering is required but you really don't need to know anything about 'electronics' as such to build these. Take your time, follow the instructions and you should have yourself an amazing sounding pair of speakers within about 2-3 hours and you wont even need to run a Sub with them!

Stock is limited however I just saw their system while enquiring at a local store here in Brisbane after grabbing mine and there are a fair number of stores around the country still with stock but you may need to get the Component kit at one store and the Cabinet kit at another store. Definitely worth the journey though :) Pre-built completed versions of these speakers are still selling at Jaycar for $899: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=CS2564

Enjoy!

  • Are the Vifa Drivers still Danish?
I thought the Vifa Brand Name was sold to a Chinese company and are now far lower quality…

    • Oh? You could be right however that must've only happened recently because the Vifa drivers I've been using all say 'Made in Denmark' on them however they may be old stock too. Hmm. To be honest I didn't take note of the ones in the kit I recently bought but I'll check when I get home and report back here. Maybe these last few JV-60 kits are the last of the Danish drivers which is even more reason to jump on them :)

But then here (linked within the above) says it depends which range you're looking at.
        http://www.falconacoustics.co.uk/drive-units-1/vifa-speakers…

        • Yeah, nice work SC. Now I'm busting to get home to check my drivers out :) They may be Chinese now which would bug me if they were used in a $5000 pair of speakers but for $374 these kits are still amazing value and are the perfect base to start building a decent 2-channel proper Hifi system. Power these with a decent quality vintage Amp off eBay or Gumtree and even your MP3s will sound incredible compared to most consumer junk available from JB etc. for 3-4 times as much.

EDIT: Someone's currently selling the component pack on eBay for $489 and they have kindly included a closeup pic of the Tweeter (last pic): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271407643783?ssPageName=STRK:MEWA… Unfortunately the label doesn't specify where it's made so these probably are the Chinese version :( Again, for $374 these still represent amazing value for anyone in the market for a decent pair of speakers though so I wouldn't let this put you off.

        • " the label doesn't specify where it's made so these probably are the Chinese version"

          That's my theory too.
If it doesn't proudly say where it's made, it's Made in China..

WAF is what's putting me off.. It was a battle to get her to accept wall mounted Bookshelfs!

    • I heard that also, I don't know if it's true or not though.
I'd love to see some good floorstanding speaker deals on here.

Built a set of these about 10 years back. Was an awesome little project and the speakers sounded fantastic. Unfortunately the laminate selection I made wasn't the greatest and the wife wasn't too happy with the 70's inspired brown wenge speakers.

  • Just to let you know none in Bendigo. Out of stock since 2002!

    JV-60 Vifa Speaker Kit

That was a good year !

    • old boy.

  • Does it require any soldering or technical skills?

    • Hey Wolfenator. Back for another audio bargain again I see ;)

No technical skills required, just a little bit of soldering. It isn't difficult but definitely not for a beginner as you can easily overheat the voice coils in the Tweeters & Woofers and snap the very fine wires and then you may aswell chuck them out. Alternatively you could attach crimp type spade connections to the wires and push them onto the speakers but be aware that push-fit connections inside a speaker box can eventually vibrate then you start getting sound problems. Best to solder.

Again, my biggest recommendation is to make sure you put aside a good few hours and take it slowly. Do not rush building these speakers because one slip with a screwdriver and you can instantly destroy a Woofer or Tweeter. Best not to use powered drills/drivers for the same reason. Take your time and if you need to continue the next day then do it otherwise you risk rushing them. Once done you'll end up with a pair of VERY decent speakers easily classed as true Hifi!

      Hope you get a pair…

      • Alternatively you could attach crimp type spade connections to the wires and push them onto the speakers but be aware that push-fit connections inside a speaker box can eventually vibrate then you start getting sound problems.

Easiest way to prevent that - place the wires so that there is no tension on the spade connector.

Or, as my wife is quite fond of - hot melt glue everything. Thankfully I haven't let her near my speakers… ;)

      • Yeah mate, I'm always up for a good audio bargain to expand upon my existing home theatre system. My new sub is really driving my music hard and I've gotten the audiophile bug now. Thanks to you for persuading me take the plunge and buy it! :)

"one slip with a screwdriver and you can instantly destroy a Woofer or Tweeter."…Yeahhhh, Nahhh. I think I'll pass. Best to leave it to the experts to build them for me. I know I will screw it up having very little experience soldering or assembling electronics :P

        • +1

Aww c'mon! You'll never grow without taking risks. If you're in Brisbane I'd be more than happy to build them up for you for free as I love these things.

        • Thanks Steve. I love your passion.
Unfortunately, I'm in Sydney. I think the piece of mind and warranty from buying a "boxed product" is what I really need. $400 is too much money to risk on a botched assembly.

  • whats the sound quality like from these speaker ..like Jamo?

    • Difficult to say as I've heard some terrible sounding Jamos but for $374 they're incredible and worth building just to find out :)

  • FYI if you ask nice enough they may transfer stock to your local store. It's big ticket enough for them to want to. Though keep in mind official Jaycar policy doesn't allow transfer of clearance stock (I used to do it anyway). Whether or not they do it will depend on area manager approval.

  • I tracked down 2 kits at my local store however the price was $449. She said they were clearance but she would confirm and call me back.

    • See my reply below for link to receipt…

  • Hi OP,

Can you please post the receipt as I'm having trouble getting that same price for the speakers.

Getting quoted price of $449 and told that $225 is much lower than the staff price too.

    Thx

  • No probs, here it is: http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w159/SteveAndBelle/Jaycar…

This is actually my mates receipt from when he got his on Monday just gone. He got both the component pack & cabinets from Capalaba however I purchased my component pack from the Woolloongabba store and the cabinets from the Capalaba store last Thursday as I was at Woolloongabba for other reasons.

I was at the Woolloongabba store yesterday buying more stuff and noticed they still had a single component pack left and it even has a special 'Clearance' price tag on it! Be careful though because it's sounding like the Jaycar staff didn't even know about this crazy low price so they're probably turning you away so they can buy them for themselves!

Go back with the receipt ASAP and stand there until you get them for $225! While you're there maybe even get them to call the Woolloongabba store to confirm as it sounds like they're the only ones who are actively trying to sell the component packs for $225 and that's no wonder if the staff are now only just realising it and want to keep them for themselves! You seriously cannot let these slip away at this price, you'll regret it for years.

Keep me posted! Fingers crossed, I really hope you get them.

    • Steve is there a chance you could ring the store and ask if its specific to them or something? My local store is saying $449 is already their clearance price on the system.

    • +1

SUCCESS!!! I finally found a store with stock and who was willing to price match the $225.00 for the speaker kit.

I cant wait till the weekend now to put these together….if only i had an amp to drive these with….hmm….damn you ozbargain! need vs want…..

      • +1

Well done A2W! Awesome weekend project but again just take your time with the assembly, put aside at least a few hours, dont rush it and if you must use a powered screwdriver make sure it's one you can easily handle & control to avoid slipping and destroying the speaker cones/domes.

A standard cheapie Amp will drive these no problem and they'll sound perfectly acceptable to most but feed them with the output of a decent Amp (even a good vintage Amp) and they'll sing! No need to blow many hundreds or thousands on a decent Amp but you do need to know what to look for especially in the 2nd hand market.

Let me know if you have any dramas or need more advice and I'll see if I can help…

  • Nah mate, not specific to that store because I got mine at Woolloongabba and my mate got his at Capalaba plus Woolloongabba has an actual ticket printed on their last set… seriously.

Sounds fishy to me. Sorry dude, sounds like your local Jaycar staff are going to be keeping theirs :(

  • +1

I can confirm that they are now made in China… Just called up and asked the bloke at the store and he walked over and checked the packaging while I waited on the phone… Not sure if this affects the sound reproduction quality if they are only being built in China under the supervision and licence of Vifa… If they SOLD off the brand then that's another story because quality control etc moves over to the new owners… I asked the guy if he'd heard the speakers before and he said "yeah man, they PUMP" hahaha good lad

    • Nice work TightAngus. So will you get a set yourself?

      • I think so! For the price, you can't go wrong! Plus DIY'ing it would be a bit of fun… Thanks for posting the deal, +1 from me!

        • Nice. Keep us posted OK!

        • Got a set! Now to make some time to put it together ;) Thanks again for the post

    • Which store was this 3 of my local stores can't do it for the $225.

      • +1

        Hi Ben,

Which state are you located? I've managed to get a VIC store to agree with the price match, but additionally have you tried calling the Sydney head office customer help line?

They were likewise very helpful and also agreed to the price match but with an additional $23 delivery fee. Being a a tight arse, i went the local option…naturally.

      • Hi Ben.

There's still a kit of components at the Woolloongabba store if you're still interested. I have no problem purchasing it and posting it to you as long as you provided me the funds first. Send me a PM if interested and if your local Jaycar stores still have the cabinet kits as they should all be $149 anyway.

  • I'll have a look for the cabinet kits 2 of the close stores to me didn't have the cabinets so I sort of gave up. I'll talk to them tomorrow to find a store with cabinets and might give you a yell.
