5kg Sunrice Australian Medium Grain White or Brown Rice Varieties @ Coles $6.49 (Was $12.99)

80

Great price for Aussie rice!

Some of you may say 'oh it's more than $1/kg' or whatever, but considering this is grown in Australia I say it is worth the extra money!

Supporting our Aussie farmers, in Aussie farms means a better future for all Aussies!

Time to carb load.

I definitely encourage supporting Aussie farmers…but why on earth are they growing rice, which requires a lot of water, in one of the driest countries?

Should I support farming practices that don't follow logic?

    • Agreed, our local "rice" tastes like crap too.

      From the link…

      Q. Water is a valuable resource in this country so why should we waste water on flooding rice bays?

      A. The rice industry uses water to produce a staple food that feeds tens of millions of people each day and therefore is a productive use of water.

Unlike any other rice growing country in the world, our growers follow the strictest management guidelines. They are not permitted to grow rice on soil that is not approved and can only grow rice on a limited portion of that approved soil. This ensures minimal seepage into the water table. In addition, many rice farmers directly sow a winter cereal crop, such as wheat or barley, into the rice paddock after it has been harvested, taking advantage of the remaining soil moisture to grow another crop.

Still, seems like a strange thing to do. Almost like doing it just because you want to prove a point.

Why not grow something that's more sustainable in our environment, instead of competing with countries that just naturally do it better?

I thought this was one of the big points of having a global economy..

Edit: Haha! Neg'd already… Just try and remember that we are currently going through a massive drought, with a $300m drought package being put together for NSW farmers. Ask yourself which you'd prefer - Aussie rice or effective use of limited water supplies?

  • feeds tens of millions of people each day

interesting stat, given our 23m population this means every one of us eats rice every day. Hmmmmmm

    • +1

Not sure about others, but my family has rice at least once a day.

      • Fair enough. Surely not all 23m of us though. Our family has rice roughly twice per week. Maybe the average of the 23m population might be one rice portion every two days.

Either way, I think this has to be another statistical lie generated by the same group who profits from people growing rice in Australia. Throw their credibility out the window!

As the statement is taken from rice growers association, pretty sure they will be exaggerating their claims.

Can someone check this?. Not ALL Sunrice rice is actually grown here. Some of their packaging states Thailand. Not all. But not all Aussie either.
    And FWIW two things

    1) Rice locally grown sold here doesnt mean its great quality - some of it is gash and on same level as some of the crappy thai rice brands like Koala

    2) Been told by various people because of 1) - you either need to add more water or less water depending on the quality of rice as well even with a rice cooker - some come out perfect, some too dry some too…. soggy.

  • Chuckwow…thanks for supporting Australian made!

  • Could've sworn this was a dupe - been running for the last couple of weeks. Oh well, cheap rice, can't complain. Picked up 3 bags in a box myself two nights ago.
