FOR MAC Elgato Thunderbolt SSD 120GB $179 USD 240GB $249 USD + $10 Delivery

Hi,
First time post all, so please be nice - I've tried to follow the guidelines but welcome corrections.

Big discount currently at MACSALES(OWC) on elgato thunderbolt SSD.

Essentially been looking for high speed thunderbolt drive for OSX with SSD. Prices may not seem that great as compared to USB 3 devices, but the sale is way cheaper than elsewhere, no expiry date given, I looked a couple weeks ago and can confirm the original marked price was in effect.

These use Sandiak SSD I am told, and it is easy to swap the drive (will void warranty) unlike the buffalo thunderbolt cases.

  • OP, please revise this post by putting the USD after the price so it is highlighted in orange making it easier for people to view.

    • Thanks, I have done so, I left a space in between, I hope it works.

      • Works! Good catch OP.

  • How is the quality of this SSD?

    • From all the reviews I have read the quality of the case Elgato make is very high, well machined and good chips. The SSD is a sandisk (slightly older generation perhaps - but should perform well)

      • +1

I personally wouldn't buy a sandisk SSD again (due to some issues with the series I purchased last). But it's probably fine for this use.

        • I prefer Crucial - and infact I plan to upgrade later anyway. It's about the only single drive 2.5" thunderbolt enclosure available - so buying the 120GB at that price is still your cheapest option I am afraid, can always eBay the drive or something.

  • Seems like big savings on these drives.

Genuine question, what are some of the uses of a portable SSD? With portable HDD's so cheap these days, what are some everyday uses/applications that you can do on a portable SDD but can't on a portable HDD?

    • +1

One use for a portable/external SSD is for the new Mac Pros. They can't add internal hdd, you can replace, but not add extra internal storage.

If you own a Mac Pro, you probably want the speed of a SSD when doing video (Final Cut) and some audio (Logic Pro) work. Same goes for their laptops with limited internal storage. Some apps the bottleneck can be the speed of the storage, not CPU.

      • Agreed. It is the fastest port available for Macs, especially those without USB3 it is the only option, it is required to take advantage of the incredibly high speed of SSD such as photo editing and playing big games - where speed is king.
It is fully bus powered and crash proof (within reason) compared to dropping a hard disk, SSD is tougher.
