200g Vittoria Espresso Beans $4.50 (Less Than Half Price) @ Woolworths

50

Was just doing the weekly food shopping and saw that my favourite bean and quantity was on the best sale I've ever seen them.

This was at the Glenhuntly store in Victoria incase it's not a nationwide deal. There were a fair few still left after I took a couple.

Normally they go for ~$7 when on special, $4.50 is a great deal for me.

  • What's the roast date?

    • It doesn't say the roast date on the pack, but the best before is 11/02/15.

As far as stale supermarket coffee goes, vittoria isn't bad

    • I get Rio Coffee beans (Espresso) from the supermarket here in Adelaide as they list the Roast date on the packets, and therefore I can choose the ones that have been roasted in the last 2 weeks.

    • I got a 500g bag from Aldi last week for $9.98, which is a better deal.
Although you cannot compare to freshly roasted ones the beans are not stale.

  • Any thoughts on how this compares to the Vittoria 'Mountain Grown' variety?

    • Both taste good to me. Just avoid the "special italian blend" in the clear packaging.

  • I normally buy fresh beans, but this stuff for $4.50 is pretty decent. I drink it black usually.

Espresso is a way of making coffee, not a type of bean…. sigh.

Some roasts/blends are better suited to espresso than others.

    • Espresso in front of bean means roasted for espresso method - filter roast is a lighter roast for filter coffees.

I don't see a whole lot of roasters actually making the distinction, so I understand why you do not know this. Those who cater to filtered coffees (which is a growing movement, I think) do.

I mostly buy from Cleanskin coffee in Brisbane, who do make the distinction.

  • Coles Kalamunda WA had the kilo packs for $18 today, cheapest I have seen them there.

  • Always check your best before dates. It always seems that when Vittoria comes up on special at Woolworths that, at the local store at least, it hasn't got all that long a life left. On one occasion, half of the stock on the shelf had a best before date of the previous month.

I once emailed the company to find out how long before the best before date it was roasted, and was told it has a shelf-life of 2 years. Whether that means the best before date is 2 years from roasting though, they didn't specify.
