LYTRO Red 16GB $199 (Was $599) or Electric Blue/Graphite 8GB Blue $199.00 (Was $498.00) at Dick Smith

440

Update: Stock is fluctuating between out of stock and in stock. It might be worth calling your local store to check.

Huge price drop from $498. Red 16GB or Graphite colour is the same price.

Lytro is a light-field camera that uses a microlens array to capture 4D light field information about a scene. Such light field information can be used to improve the solution of computer graphics and computer vision-related problems, and to make digital plenoptic pictures that can be refocused after they are taken. The camera doesn't capture 'pictures' in the way your current camera does - it's capturing information about where the light is travelling. This information can then be turned into a picture or, more to the point, a series of pictures with different focus points.

Other retailer prices for the 16GB:
Kogan - $449
Topbuy - $455

Other retailer prices for the 8GB:
Kogan - $399
Topbuy - $372

    DigitalRev Review

Should help understand what this device does…

    • +1

ahhaah same link I was about to post. yes, didn't have a clue about this, so had to youtube it to see how it works.

      • So it's a device for a pervert? I'm only assuming so because he compared it to something nasty.

  • +3

Awesome. Ordered! Been wanting to play with one of these for ages but couldn't justify the crazy price. Thanks!

  • +1

Good deal! Just bought the Red 16GB version

  • +1

these are awesome, I can't believe they've been commercialised and got so cheap so quickly.

    check https://www.lytro.com/camera/

  • +1

    really good price. bought one.

from Amazon, the blue one is bit expensive :)

  • +1

it was about 8-10yrs since the first prototype using a contax 645 with a 16mp digitalback.

Things to note. The final image resolution is about 2 megapixel. more than enough for a 4x6 print.
you need to use the software for a final image. ONLY built in memory. no memory card support. definately no facebook access

  • +1

Terrific price - suspect these will be very collectable someday too!

    • +1

loooool. I wouldn't count on it

    • Just like my laserdisc player.

  • +2

If you get the red one, you get 16 GB instead of 8 GB for the same 199 price.
Not for me, but maybe good for others.

    Should You Buy One?

I’m going with yes on this one. Absolutely you should buy it. Why? You’d buy it to compose some of the craziest images you’ve ever seen with a consumer device. Buy it just to say you own the coolest camera currently on the market. Buy it so that when your kids are refocusing the images they capture on their Google Glass version 12 in the near future, you can tell them how you owned the first camera that was able to do that.

The Lytro isn’t going to replace your compact shooter and it won’t even make a dent in your DSLR, but it puts the fun back into composing images cool quirky images. If you’re a lover of photography, it’s hard to pass up the Lytro camera as a second- or even third-shooter.

  • No delievery option and Out of stock everywhere already -_-

  • oh shit…. too fast.
    all gone already.
    no more delivery.
and see who is luck for click and collect now.

  • +6

I wouldn't bother guys. If it was $99, it would be worth it to have a play but having tried one when they first released I wasn't impressed.

Yes the focus options are amazing, but the pics are very low res, low detailed.

    edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ9W5TGbanI

that's a video you want to watch if you have no idea what this is. It also describes its flaws towards the end.

lol, that dude is like the jeremy clarkson of camera reviews.

      • +1

An annoying knob who is nowhere near as funny as he or the internet like to think?

  • Too late, too sad :(

  • Wow, didn't know Lytro wasn't selling well at all now it is put on massive discount. Interesting piece of technology, may be just not getting the consumer's interest.

  • I was going to buy but found that the max resolution is 1080 x 1080, way too low, even you couldn't print an A4, refocusing is a good feature but at the end of the day you need a high res image (view or print) so if you have missed the deal then this info might be a relief.
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/reviews/10187735/Lytro…

    • I agree with this, I too have looked at these and really it's $200 that will end up sitting in a draw. In real world camera terms it's non practical so your purely spending $200 to have a play with.

  • This technology would be perfect on my phone.

  • wow, ozbargained!

  • the blue one seems to be available still

    • And they are all gone

  • Still available Perth CBD store for Click and Collect, and maybe other stores too…

  • If I wasn't on the cusp of losing my job I would be all over this. This price is unbelievable and the cameras are pretty cool for fun factor.

  • If anyone bought one of these in Melbourne and now regretting it, I'll buy it off them.

  • This still has stock. Should not be marked out of stock. Would buy it for $99. It has been on eBay deals for the longest time for $485 and seems to be a slow mover.

  • Saying it can't be added because it's currently out of stock.

  • Now it is all gone…

  • they're reduced because they dont sell, they dont sell because they're only worth $50.

    • IMO they aren't worth a thing. You can only view the images with the accompanying software. There is no way to share your photos with the world

      • ..or once you have used the software to get the shots you want, you select to export the photos as JPEGs. Thats why the software is there.

  • +1

Tempting but I'd rather put the $200 into some other camera gear. Don't get me wrong, the tech looks promising. But maybe they need to do a better job of integrating it into the stuff that we already use instead of making us use their own software. Maybe an ability to export as a Youtube clip or even a gif. I'm sure it'll catch on though if they get bought by someone like Apple.

  • Thanks I wasn't sure about that - just saved me 200…assuming a similar deal comes across again

  • I've seen some pictures from the camera before. I'm not sure if they are the final output, but the fact that the pictures were proprietary to allow you to select the focus point, prevents others from viewing it. You'd have trouble viewing it on your phone, etc. If there was a way to process a final static image, after selecting the focus point, that'd be great.

    • Did you look at the review videos above?
The pictures can be exported as a static image.

  • Might be 1 left at Dick Smith Sydney on George Street. I just got one this morning.

  • +1

    For $200 it's still not worth it…

    • agree, the quality of the picture is similar taken from my cheap pc webcam

      • This is only version 1, so I can't wait to see the Lytro 2.0. Higher screen/photo resolution,

For $200 it is still quiet expensive for something with a 2mp photo resolution. You could get the V1 for $250 last year from Dicksmith or Harvey Norman.

  • Blue and Graphite 8GB are available again. No they aren't. Trying to add one to cart fails.

  • +3

Another over-hyped ozbargain deal. To all those who purchased one, do you have any need for it? IMO it's just an expensive toy.

If you read into it, the image quality isn't that great (comparable to an el-cheapo webcam). What point is there in being able to change the focus of an image with bad quality? A review also showed that there really isn't much of a difference in changing the focus for images taken from a distance.

I'd rather take photos with a potato.

    • +1

Please upload potato images when you can. I am most interested.

    • +2

Does your potato have 8gb/16gb of memory?
Does it have a 4D light capturing microlens array?
      Is it red/blue/graphite in colour?
Does it even have a USB port?

      Didn't think so!

      • +5

Does your Lytro become tasty once fried?

Potatoes come in pink, brown, yellow and white.

        Of course it has USB!

Does your Lytro come in unwashed?

Hahaha. We could play this game all day :)

      • 4D light capturing microlens array? So it not only captures 3 dimensional images, but time as well?

Or maybe it's just a gimmicky toy of zero practical use. Which is fine. But let's not get carried away.

    • +2

      $99 would be total bargain.

I wouldn't fret if you missed out. Lytro are promising "breakthrough" products in 2014.

      http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/08/12/lytro-ceo-admits-lay…

When these are out watch for the Lytro 1.0 fire sale as there will be plenty of unsold stock.

  • +2

This is good for food porn!

  • still too expensive imho

  • Maybe you guys should actually call some DSE's. I did and found one in Canberra (16gb), got a mate to buy it for me. Can't wait to mess around with it. :)

  • Picked up the last one in Adelaide CBD today.
Don't know what I'm going to do with this…

    • You've been OzBargained.

  • These are not too bad, played around with one during a wedding.

The hardest thing is actually trying to compose a photo to take advantage of the differences, as you're trained to take photos with standard equipment so if you take photos in the same manner you'll get essentially an average photo from a poor quality camera.

  • 7 units left Perth CBD. 1 red still on shelf.
Accessories also on sale. Tripod mount and camera sleeve going for $9.95 each at the Perth CBD store.

  • Today it was stock in a evening (8gb only)
    Perth CBD
    Sydney Chatswood
    Melbourne Bourke st
    Melbourne Westfield Fountain Gate

  • I see some jizzwad has a Lytro on ebay last night hoping to make a couple of hundred…

  • Out of stock? Pigs arse.
Just picked up a 16gb Red at Chadstone VIC. There's 1 more as of 8/3/14 and one pouch thing left too $9.95. Ild say about 4-5 8gb models also. Bourke St also has 8gb models.
