40cm Heller Remote Controlled Pedestal Fan - $15 - From Officeworks

600

I was looking for a cheap remote controlled fan for my bedroom, and discovered that Officeworks has Heller 40cm ones on clearance for $15, they seem to be retailing elsewhere for about $40.

Of course being a clearance item, not all stores will have stock, but the Orificeworks in Braddon (ACT) had a few when I dropped by.

I should also mention they had 50cm Heller fans with a remote and timer for $50, which seem to retail for at least double that elsewhere. There were quite a few of these at Officeworks Braddon.

Really nice fan. Using same fan for last 3 years without any issue.

I'd hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I had a remote control fan a few years ago. Unfortunately the standby power was ~75W. If you switch it off at the wall you can avoid this, but then what is the advantage of being remote controlled?
Can anyone confirm if the standby power usage for this fan is the same?

guess you are not a fan of this model?

        mate, you're out of control!

        • there's only 3 settings

out of control, out of control, out of control.

Are you sure it wasn't 7.5W?

75 watts is a lot, that energy has to go somewhere, was it hot to the touch?

      • -1

I don't recall it being especially hot.
Yeah you are right — it is unlikely to be consuming that much energy without actually doing anything and without being hot.

I've got a Steplight power meter, and it reckons it uses 0.5W in standby.

When the fan's on the highest power setting it only uses ~35W, so 75W for only standby seems really high.

You were not using a decent energy tester but some cheap rubbish because these units don't use anywhere near 75 watts on standby and if they did there would the same heat generated as an 80W incandescent light bulb and this would be easily noticeable through both the plastic changing colour over time and also the warmth when touched.

Get a decent energy meter like the powermate lite which is made in Australia and 100% accurate even with small loads.

You can buy these energy meters from the manufacturer here - http://www.power-mate.com.au/ - or some libraries have them that you can borrow.

      • misread you sorry ;)

  • guess your are not a fan of this model? oops supposed to reply to the one above

I might give this one a spin and see if it deserves to be put up on a pedestal.

  • Fantastic deal.

I have this fan and I can't say my experience with it is the same as most of the commentors. It's noisy (not motor noise, just rattles a lot). But it is relatively powerful too. And the construction of the remote is incredibly poor; if you drop it on a hard surface from wasit height, you can kiss it goodbye.

P.S. apologies for lack of puns in my post.

  • The $15 fan I saw at Officeworks only had 3-mode buttons and no remote control so that broke the deal.

    • kmart had $12 40cm pedestal fans 2 months ago.

i bought one and use every night and it's still going well.

  • Just F anyone I in NSW, website says/said that Five Dock and Glebe store have stock but when I went there today (Saturday 8/3/14), both stores have been Ozbargained.
