    Eg. MEL-TYO $567 Return

    That should say MEL-NRT

    • +3

TYO is the city code for Tokyo whereas NRT is the airport code for Narita (which is in Tokyo). They are both acceptable.

      • +5

Narita is not in Tokyo, It's like gold coast to brisbane.

Haneda is the one in Tokyo.

        • Using Jetstar bookings, it says Melbourne - Narita for the Tokyo flight.

  • It's very good price for the peak season - April.
But I plan to go around late Nov, just wait to see $4xx.

    • +1

Last time we went it was around $500 return including luggage, now $635.

Reckon it's worth waiting? We are looking for November as well. Maybe some early ski season. March last time we went and was fantastic.

  • Why is Sydney so damn expensive? Doh..

    • +1

      airport taxes

    • Sydney always gets shafted on Japan deals.
Coupled with meals for the long flight, paying for luggage there and back (presuming you will be shopping there), its really only about $100~$200 difference from a Qantas flight.
Difference is Qantas is a direct flight….

JAL Sydney to Narita return is $1059 now. They can add domestic flight Narita to Sapporo,Nagoya,Osaka,Fukuoka and Okinawa for the same price. I think JAL is good price when domestic flights are included.

        • Fly Peach or Jetstar Japan for domestic flights everytime. Wouldn't touch JAL or ANA since these guys came along.. JAL and ANA are usually 4/5x more expensive

        • Umm… chickentaste you missed yasui's point that those return domestic fares are included, along with meals, drinks, seat allocation, & luggage on all sectors for $300 more from Sydney, with a non-discount carrier. And those MileageBank can be useful.
Naha fares are not that cheap even with those carriers you suggest.

  • Why don't they fly to Nagoya!!!

    • -3

Cause there's nothing at Nagoya. Also, shinkansen Tokyo to Nagoya is only a couple hours.

      • oh, Nagoya is plenty fun.
        Nagoya-Tokyo 1h40
        Nagoya-Osaka 1h
        by shinkansen

      • Yeah, but it's another $200 to your fare, what's "at" fukuoka? I have been to all of these places and they all have plenty of things "at" them.

        • Fukuoka is pretty much the best place I've ever lived (I was there 5 years). Great food, great shopping, friendly people, open spaces, no attitude.

But you're right, there's no 'obvious' thing to visit Fukuoka for. It's great as a starting point for a week or two exploring Kyushu by JR pass, car or bicycle. Go see a bit of the real Japan (not just Akiba/Shinjuku/Ginza BS)!

        • Yeah, I loved it as well, was only there a week.

        • +2

Was going to give you plus because Kyushu is really awesome, but then you called Akiba, Shinjuku and Ginza BS. I lived in Tokyo and (here comes the 'attitude') am guessing, you wanted to live there, too, but got stuck in Fukuoka.

        • +1

No (but nice guess!), also lived in Tokyo and Osaka in the decade I was in Japan. Both okay, had fun for about a year in each, moved on as they didn't really do it for me. Too expensive, too busy, weather's not as good, less easy to do things outdoor I enjoy.

BS because it's all most tourists ever see of Japan and this is a great shame. A bit like people who go to Sydney CBD and then tick off Australia from your bucket list.

My hometown is Nagoya. You can go ski in Hakuba from Nagoya. Gateway city to Takayama, Shirakawago. Kyoto is less than an hour by shinkansen.

        • Misokatsu!!!

  • You can always get a cheap fare SYD to Cairns, then fly from there to Oaaka

  • plus $8.50 booking fee, $71 for a seat, $700 for luggage.
with a stop in Cairns or Gold Coast
    Jetstar are fcuked

Wouldn't the closest airport be KIX? OSAKA.
