Free 50GB of Cloud Storage from Box

1340

Hey all,

Just noticed on a new HP laptop that I was setting up that they are offering free 50GB for all signups. The URL doesn't pass any identifying info and it would appear to let anyone sign up - similar to the Dell deals from last year (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/93417).

This is the only other information I could find on it - http://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/GetPDF.aspx%2Fc03958883.pdf

Not sure if it's lifetime or for a year, can't find anything that says either way..

Have at it!

Thanks to mel-t for more info;

…and here: https://support.box.com/hc/en-us/articles/200527088-HP-Syste…

How long will I get the additional storage? Will my account get downgraded after the promotion?
Once you get your additional storage, you’ll never be downgraded; once you have it, the space is yours forever.

What if I already have a Box Personal account? Can I get the additional storage?
Yes, just log into your Box account from the app and you’ll be upgraded to an account with 25GB or 50GB of storage.

  • I think 50gb is normal from Box

    • Nah, free plan is only 10GB - https://www.box.com/pricing/

It's normal in the sense that they keep giving free offers like these.

Their iOS update in January came with 50GB free, Xperia owners get them free, in Feb last year they had a dell 50GB free deal, in June it was free for LG phones and tablets, Samsung ATIV tablets, and HP laptops.

I didn't check out the other deals, but the Dell deal was similar to this, i.e. anyone could sign up with the link without having bought anything from Dell.

The free plans limit file sizes to 250MB though.

        • The free plans limit file sizes to 250MB though.

Which limits it's usefulness somewhat. You forgot to mention the HP touch pad, which was the first iirc, back then it was only 100mb which is probably a lot more annoying

Not sure if it's lifetime or for a year

That's kind of an 'important' detail…

    • -1

I don't think that comment should be negged, it is an important detail. If it was only for a year or two and not permanent, most wouldn't bother. I wouldn't have.

As it stands, a good find by the OP :-)

It's probably the fact that there was only 7 minutes between jv's comment and mel-t below providing more information. jv is more inclined to complain-first-provide-details-later. ;)

I know I didn't have much free time when I first posted it, so my research time was limited, which made mel-t's contribution valuable.

        • When you put it that way, fair enough! :D

Nice find! Thanks OP! I've successfully signed up and gotten my 50GB via the browser in my android phone.

    • Thanks Shayne3 for referring to mobile browser.
My office computer was not allowing me to open the website and I did not think of my mobile browser.

      • No worries, that's actually the same reason I tried it :-)

  • worked me for

  • Thank you very much OP.

    Nice find.

    50gb of storage

  • So you have to have a HP computer/device to utilise this?

    • No. Nb they also have a sync tool that allows folders on your PC etc to keep sync with the cloud
      https://sites.box.com/sync4/

      • I meant a HP to utilise the deal, not the box application/service.

        • Not quite sure if I understand your meaning. The deal is that you get to sign up for a box account with 50GB of space for free. They say it's for HP device owners, but I just signed up via the OP's link and I have no HP devices at all. I've logged into my new box account and it tells me I have 50GB of space.

        • Yes but you're signing up. I'm already have an account, and it says it will upgrade the limit you have. But it's not. :(

    I must be missing something.
The link only allows new signup, not login.
You can log in and get the extra 25GB upgrade, but you need to use the Windows 8 Box app.
Is there a way to get the upgrade by logging in using a browser?

    • Oh well I'll have to wait till I get home then.

  • Wondering if this will work on a LG Nexus 4…

    • I used the browser in mobile as suggested by Shayne3 and it worked perfectly.

Max file size 250MB on free plan… Not much good for video files

Thanks OP though. Might use it one day…

  • How do you upgrade if you already have an account? I cant seem to do this.

    DBR

    • I'm having the same problem. Are you trying on a HP device though? I'm still not sure if it matters or not.

      • I have a Dell (& a previous account) & tried to upgrade but it wouldn't.

  • Not sure if my entire unit and tools will fit in 50gb box. I'll give it a good hard try though.

Thanks OP. Signed up using 5 different email addresses to get 250GB of storage.

      In true ozBargain style.

  • Worked for me with Chrome - thanks!

  • I cant work out how to get it ? I have an account with them already, and it's 25GB.

  • New sign up. Used chrome on an android phone with no problem.

  • How do I redeem the offer?
For customers with an existing Box account, they will be automatically upgraded to 25 or 50GB when they log in via the Box Windows 8 app on their new HP PC

It seems can't do it without w8. Only option to create an account.

Anyway to do it with existing account without w8?

  • Hey,

Is this similar to Dropbox? Is there desktop folder integration?

    Cheers

    • Yes, yes

      • *except the 250MB-per-file limit.

  • Looks like I already got this last year…

My email was already registered and when I logged in, there was 50Gb there… Might get around to using it one day…

    • found myself in exactly the same boat - godd reminder to backup some photos though

  • it should be mentioned above that offer only applies if:
    1. you are creating new account
    2. you already have account then you need Hp computer (with Windows 8 to download box app) to upgrade your storage.

  • What is box like for a development environment? I'm thinking of using this for work

    • What kind of dev? I'd personally suggest github if you're after proper version control.. Box has some, but it's not as vast as git.

  • Just worked fine from my gen1 Nexus7 tablet Dolphin browser. 50 gig up and running in 2 mins. Too easy. Thanks OP. Good to have more cloud storage.
