Get 50GB of Box FREE for Life & 50GB for Coworkers or Friends.

Thanks! My existing 25GB account was empty. So deleted it and signed up for a 50GB account.
Maybe I'll use it one day?

    • haha same

      • Deleted one account, but won't allow re-use of same email.

        • See spheres post below. It explains how to get 50GB onto existing accounts without trashing your desired email address!

  • Thanks, worked for me!

  • Won't accept Gmail accounts any reason why?

    • Check spam folder :)

    • +1

Use an alias to sign up, eg. [email protected]
Your email must already be associated with a box account.

    • +3

Worked fine with my Gmail account (I've never signed up to Box before though)

  • +1

I think you can only get 50GB max for free (can't combine with Sony/Xperia 50GB bonus)
I'm going to keep using Dropbox due to file-size limitations :|

  • +1

I wish you could delete existing accounts and re-register to effectively upgrade them. I just tried and it still recognises the old account so the only way is to use another email account :(

YOU SIR ARE A FREAKIN' LEGEND!!
        Yes that sentence warranted caps!

I've requested this be added to the OPs deal as it's pure GOLD.

      • Hi, can someone please help? I just registered 2 accounts with box. When I try to add an additional email id to sync the accounts, I get an error message that this email id is already in use. What am I doing wrong?

        • +1

Do NOT create a new account with the added email address. Just add any email address to your existing account, one which has not been used with another box account. Then remove the original one which you then use to create a new account.

        • thank you, i tried that too!! but when i entered the same email account to the 2nd account, it didn't accept it! just wondering how the others are doing it…

        • You cannot add an email address that is already being used. Just add any other email address. If you are trying to join/sync 2 accounts, then you can't. What we are talking about is only if you want to setup a new account with an email address that is currently associated with another account.

        • cheers, got you, finally! thank you for explaining that!!

      • Thanks, Sphere, that worked well! And thanks as well, OP, for sharing :)

  • woohoo! 1tb of online storage!

For your 20 box accounts? ;-P

      • If he actually does have 20 accounts I hope he is aware of the 120 day inactivity policy of Box :)

I previously had 3 x 25GB accounts but now just have 1 for myself (work) and my wife has 1 (photos and junk) … awesome.

nothing that can't be overcome with the magic of scripts

  • I went to sign up and said my e-mail was already registered. Logged in and discovered I've already got 50GB? Mm okay then.

    • There was a deal a while ago but I think it was 50GB for 1 or 2 years.

      • Ah oks. I checked my e-mail, I signed up in Feb 2012. I don't see any thing that suggests it'll expire..

        • +2

You're right, I went back and checked, it doesn't expire.

  • +3

this is awesome, especially since they now have a sync application

  • Awesome!!

  • +1

Good stuff…. I had 5Gb with them already, so nice free upgrade to 50Gb.

Tried to delete the old account and use same email but didnt work, so had to use a different one.
But 50Gb for free for ever is too good a deal to quibble over finer details like that :).

    Thanks OP!

    • yup. deleting old account does not enable re-registering for some unknown reason ???

      • just send an email and then will reactivate the account within 24 hours

  • +1

Cheers OP, don't know when I'll use it, but one day.

  • +2

    cool..

maybe next month they have free 100gb and we recycle our email again hahaha

now some ideas/tips of how to use this with synology NAS maybe?

  • -4

How long does 50GB last? What happens when that time is over? Data still kept or must be renewed to keep data?

    • +5

      Read the heading.

  • does this have a desktop client like dropbox

    • +2

Yup, I think it didn't until fairly recently. But definitely does.

  • Great! Some size as the free Adrive account I signed up for but heaps better.

  • Thanks OP, signed up and done! :)

  • Great. Don't think its nearly as good as drop box but free is free :)

  • +6

Do people understand this is not like Dropbox, you can only download one file at a time unless you pay premium???

    • So either you get 2GB and download as many files at a time as you want, or you get 50GB and download one file at a time.

      • +1

Where each files is up to 250Mb! :)

  • dropbox doesn't have free webdav support does it? i think this free offering is better than dropbox

  • How do companies like this make money?

    • -5

Because people have to pay to get their files back…

    • +1

Premium accounts and ads, I'd say. Disk space is relatively cheap.

  • -4

box.net would be ok, except they don't have a desktop client on the free plans. It makes it a bit of a PITA to actually get any data there, though using FolderSync I at least backup my Android's contents there nightly. I don't really know why since it syncs everywhere else too, but hey - 50GB of free storage right?

Side note, this 50GB thing has been around for ages I'm pretty sure. I signed up ages ago (literally over a year ago?) using my work email address and it said I could get 50GB for myself + anyone else on that domain if it was a business. So I said it was and signed everyone else at work up too. Obviously doesn't work for @hotmail/@gmail/@anything-else-like-that but seemed a good idea at the time.

No desktop client definitely restricts its use.

  • Awesome service, massive storage! +100

250MB file limit would be a problem for 0.1% of genuine personal users. They'd be educated people, wouldn't bitch about an amazing freebie, and would simply compress files into spanned RARs.

    • +4

Thanks for digging up those stats for me! I was wondering where I could find an authoritative source for that.

      • I guess I must be part of the 0.1%.. yay?

  • Thanks OP

  • just keep getting slow upload detected. Test passes ok.

  • Great cloud server, now all we would contend is with our 0.2MB/s Oz _ uplink connects…..5 secs per meg (cable) means >1Hr per Gb. *Days to utilise 50G of backup power. 1MBps would be sooo huge.

  • Good deal, got 25GB yesterday, and 50GB today, it would be great if it kepd doubling, 100GB tomorrow :)

  • so if I already have 5GB of files in my 25GB Box account, after I get 50GB (whether using the another email address or the trick above), I would have to re-upload the 5GB of files again?

    • Unless you can find a way to transload onto Box.com. And if you do, please contact me, as I want to transload some files onto Box.com as well (from Box and some other sources).

    • how about 'sharing' the folders in your old account and invite your new account as a collaborator?

  • +2

Important to note this, I saw it on the CNet post:

Just an FYI - There is a download limit of 10GB per month after uploading unless you pay for it.

Something to keep in mind - Assuming this is correct, if you actually store 50 GB in there it'd take you five months to get all that data back!

    • Well, true. But for occasional access to the files it's OK. And if a disaster struck and all my other backup would get lost, I would probably pay to get the data back….
But it is like with an airbag - good to have, but hope that it will never be needed.

Just went through Box Support q&a.
Here's an excerpt from David D who appears to be a customer service rep.

      "
The bandwidth limitation refers specifically to your usage of Box "share links" in a given month. Once you reach 10GB you can no longer download via shared links until the next month. "

      Source: https://support.box.com/entries/23005882-over-bandwidth-limi…

So I think you'll be able to download all 50GB just fine. Just don't share it all lol

      • Thanks for that, good to know :)

  • Signed up for subsequent box.com (Dell)ac bringing storage to 75 GB if counting my original and separate 25 GB of course. Haven't tested the supposed 10GB monthly DL ceiling/freebie limit, but 75 GB is about 250 MB*300 pieces of .FLAC material or whatever compressed fps/jpeg media one might care to have up in cloud format.

  • Thanks just signed up.

  • +2

Good as a backup (and it's free!) but with all the restrictions on file size, bandwidth etc. not meant for serious use. I would also keep a backup elsewhere just in case their "for life" means "as long as we're making money"

  • Just wondering what do people use this for? It seems kinda pointless to use it as a hard drive as it take up your download limit when you access files…

    • +5

Offsite backups are my main use. Computer exploded, house was lost? Your files are safe in the cloud.
No point backing up important stuff onto a drive/cd/whatever and storing it in your house if they both get destroyed during a fire or flood.

      • ah ok, fair enough. but im not quite sure if i would the best idea to upload sensitive data?

        • Thats up to you really. I dont upload sensitive data, although i dont have a great deal of that on my computer anyway. Mostly going to be uploading photos.
If you're worried about sensitivity, get a fireproof safe and store a backup in it, or better yet, another building ie a friends place. You could encrypt a hard drive and give it to a friend. Just dont forget your password..

        • +9

What do you guys have? Codes for a nuclear missile?

        • Your files are safe in the cloud.

i wouldn't rely soley on any one storage provider. they could shut up shop overnight or lose your data.

also all your sensitive data needs to be encrypted. dropbox have suffered numerous breaches.

distributed redundancy is the key. i trust an old external hdd more than the cloud.

        • +2

I have a few nuclear missile codes and other than that, I upload a lot of work material. It's not really sensitive data, obviously I'd prefer it stay private but no real harm will come from it if it was to leak somehow.

The nuke codes are obviously a bit more sensitive.

As the guy above says, anything important should be backed up on more than one cloud and preferably locally too. Everything of importance here is spread over 3 networked computers in different parts of the house, some work material is on USB in addition to those and then I use Box and GDrive for Cloud backups. And all of the above is automatically synced, some on delay, some in real time. Be careless only with the data you can afford to lose.

        • +2

but im not quite sure if i would the best idea to upload sensitive data

Compress + encrypt with a decent password, should be enough to keep your naughty pics safe :) As other have mentioned, always keep a second copy elsewhere.

        • +2

Use TrueCrypt to encrypt sensitive data. I've got things like tax returns in a TrueCrypt volume in Dropbox so I don't lose them :)

        • Unfortunately Box only allows files up to 250mb. So there are 2 main options. The first is to archive your files with a password (WinRAR, 7zip), this has the additional benefit of being able to split large files to 250mb pieces. The second option is to use BoxCrypt.

        • +1

We finally got our 50GB Box accounts hey Mitchh! ;)

        • The second option is to use BoxCrypt.

thanks for bringing to my attention

if using linux you can use encfs

        • We sure did, it was a pleasant surprise to see this on the front page of OzBargain yesterday. :)

        • sensitive data, you mean your favourite porn collection? ;)

encrypt your 'data' on your local machine then upload it on cloud storage.

  • Thanks OP. Just signed up and found out no Linux support.

Edit: no FTP for personal account. :\

  • Good find OP. Always handy.

  • Why does it ask for a phone number during signup? Can I put a fake one there?

    • yes and you can change it after it's set up.

    • I did.

    • Its strange that it required a phone number, but not a name. I put in my email, a fake number (pretty sure just the number 1) and thats it. I didn't need to put anything in the name textboxes…

  • From memory, box has limitation of uploaded mb/file?

    • This has been mentioned several times already.

  • yey don't need that 50gb invite anymore :D

cheers for the email removal tip!

  • i had 25gb before now when i log in it shows 50gb!
no need to delete n resign up..

  • Thanks for the tip on resigning by deleting your existing after adding another. I'm gonna use mailinator :P

Silly me I just deactivated the account thinking I'd be able to reuse the email, nope and now I can't even log back in to remove by doing the add another account trick. Dangit!

    • I sent an account recovery email, got it reactivated within the hour and removed it using temp email from http://www.mytrashmail.com/

Signed up and finished my uploading. Now my girlfriend wants me to fill her box.
