  • In my experience, steer clear of frames made in Italy. If you're going to shell out designer prices, find something Scandinavian, German or Japanese made.

    • Surely the frames are made in China?

      • Just checked my Dolce & Gabbana frames, they are made in Italy

      • Take a look at the Tom Ford frames. Clearly shows "Made in Italy".

      • most of these "branded" designer frames are manufactured in Italy by Luxottica or Safilo, both Italian companies. I imagine most people won't take the effort to look for other big-name brands with frames manufactured outside of this duopoly given how disposable frames are these days.

    • Whats wrong with frames made in Italy?

  • Hi Pacolito,

OPSM typically charge a fee to fit lenses in frames purchased elsewhere (including their online shop). This fee is in the range of $20 to $30 from memory. It is worth considering making a trip to a store and asking whether they will price match with their in-store stock. I had success with this last time I was in the market for new glasses and received a quote including the discount off the cost of the frames and avoided the fitting fee.

    • hi soozib,
I would avoid OPSM at all cost to get the lenses.
Laubman and Pank ( read OPSM) quoted me $200 for lenses on the glasses purchased instore.
Optical Warehouse quoted the health fund full rebate (around $110) and no surcharge on frames purchased elsewhere.
      Go figure

        Hi IanC,
Don't worry, I came to my senses and never went through with the purchase. I was just letting others know how how to avoid a hidden fee resulting from purchasing online.

I became pretty disheartened with the fact OPSM now have a licence to sell the big designer brands (e.g. Ralph) so most (all?) independent optometrists are unable to stock them anymore. Quality of service is variable too between stores and staff.

In the end I received pretty amazing service from an independent who actually did some work helping me get my prescription right and frames that suited me - no regrets :-)

I would avoid buying from OPSM entirely, mega overpriced at least in Australia thanks in part to the stupid lack of competition for designer glasses (if you are not aware of who Luxottica are and how many brands they own/make under licence, google it, but in short Ray Ban, Persol, Prada, Versace, the various different variants of Polo Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Bvlgari, DKNY, D&G, Gucci, Chanel etc).

That said, I do like Luxottica brands, currently wearing Prada. There are two ways to get Luxottica cheap in Australia (FYI my health fund limit is $250, no separate sub-limits for lenses/frames):

    1) http://www.visiondirect.com.au/ which my health fund recognises. They are Hong Kong based, but with an Australian subsidiary who issues the tax invoice. There's a decent selection of frames for around $150 and single vision lenses with a high degree of thinning are around $100 so I can usually get something good within my limit or with a small out of pocket. There is also usually a coupon code available for them somewhere

    2) Buy frames somewhere overseas online (unfortunately no rebate) and get lenses fitted by a local independent optometrist.

Last pair I got for around $150 from a UK Optometrist on eBay. Local optometrist (http://www.waopticians.com.au/) fitted lenses for $250 for which I received a full rebate. Long story short, out of pocket cost was $150.

Same frames from OPSM were around $450, equivalent lenses would have been around $350. Long story short, had I gone through OPSM it would've been $550 out of pocket.

OPSM does have its uses though, good to go in there and try on frames, take note of the model number and then order somewhere else.

FYI, I get sunglasses for around $20 a pair (no rebate) from http://www.zennioptical.com/ . All generic frames, but some stuff that looks similar to designer (inc passable imitation of Ray Ban Wayfarers).

    Yapapi
