got pink for my wife, thanks

    • That was fast!

      • +21

Well, the thing is that she has been asked me for this every single night for the last 4 months when i got to bed and whisper on my ear :)) Could you suffer that??

        • LOL!

        • +3

          I like her "Purchasing Power"

        • +1

          You are a resilient man

    • +1

think yourself lucky, i have had the same nagging treatment but only difference being that she wanted a 5s.. i finally relented :(

    • +13

Hopefully you got pink from her afterwards.

      • +1

        Crass but also witty

      • You just have to whisper in her ear.

  • I have been watching this phone with interest (because of the small form factor) since late last year, but I broke early and ended up with the Xperia ZR for $379 delivered from kogan. Loving the ZR but jealous of the Z1 compact.

Hats off to Sony on this one. How a 'mini' version should be made. Smaller size, not smaller specs.

  • thats what Im after a superb specs & compact size phone …but how to purchase it outright?

    • +1

Whilst not advertised on their online store, you can buy it outright unlocked in Telstra stores for $552

I bought one from Telstra shop in Tuggeranong - ACT. They had plenty left.

  • Between Moto X assuming available at $549 and Sony Z Compact ($552), which is recommended.

    • +1

Considering the camera and water proof (resistant) i would go the sony.

      • +1

actually the camera is quite bad on both, the moto has some very very unique software features that set it apart, battery and time saving notifications and ability to boss the phone around without turning it on :)

Apples and oranges. Sony Z Compact is for those who need a small phone. Moto X is for the rest of the market which wants/doesn't mind a big screen.

It definitely WAS a good phone that brought many new things. However, hardware wise it was outdated already when it was released… Now in 2014 Q2 I find it hard to recommend. Motorola delayed too long in bringing it here.

I'd suggest you buy one of these instead:
      - Nexus 5
      - Galaxy S5/Htc One (2014)/Xperia Z2

      • Sony Z Compact is for those who need a small phone. Moto X is for the rest of the market which wants/doesn't mind a big screen.

Not exactly. Their physical dimensions are almost identical, the X merely fits in a larger screen due to thinner bezels.

In fact the Sony would feel even bigger in the hand/pocket, since the corners aren't as rounded and the phone doesn't taper towards the sides.

    • Or if you prefer the active notifications, always listening mode, excellent driving mode, great battery life and a more 'stock' looking version of android go the moto X.

Best to just look up reviews for both and make your decision :)

      • Thanks all. Both the handset have good reviews and price is same. But I agree with raven2000 that it is better to buy latest handset.

    • +1

Moto X has no Expandable Memory.

  • just wondering if there is any telstra bloatware or logos on the handset?

    • +1

Just a few apps that you can't delete but can disable. Logo on startup but otherwise looks and feels like any other android.

Additional bonus is @ YEAR WARRANTY FROM TELSTRA. Grey market sellers only offering 1 year and no bricks and mortar stores - easily a better option to me.

  • So tempting. My iPhone 5 is banged up pretty bad and I want an Android this time around. But I have my eye on the Z2 at the moment. Hopefully they have some good deals early on.

  • Looks like a slightly more elegant and powerful Xperia ZR.

  • +1

This is also available at JB hifi for $586 Telstra branded, with all those Coke Unleashed coupons, paypass cash back and cheap gift cards, it can be a good option.

Also spoke to Sony Centre guys, and they reckon Sony won't even stock the Z1 compact past the Telstra exclusivity period as they consider it 'old' in 2 months time.

    • +1

TBH, that's why I won't buy Sony every again (or anything non-vanilla Android) - back when I had the Xperia S, that was their flagship phone and they didn't give it Jellybean for about 18 months past due date. Their software updates and support are woeful (not sure if they've since improved)

      • +2

Tbh who cares, and if you do that much, there are plenty of ways to update outside of official channels.

      • +1

Well the Z1 compact just got updated to Kit kat, although you will have to install the UK firmware.

Don't see what's wrong with that.

  • Great handset! Love it :)

  • who can enlighten me why i should choose x1 compact instead of nexus5?

    • +1

Smaller footprint, water proofing, greater camera, better build quality and microSD card slot.

Updates can be obtained from Cyanogen mod, if you want equally fast updates.

  • +2

God those new plans are horrible. When did they change?

    • Wow, didn't notice that.

They've halved the data on the 'small' plan.

  • Awesome form factor on these phones.
I'm a little jealous of it as I'm using a note 3 at the moment.

  • I need to move from a 5s i'm bored fiddling with it

  • kitkat doesn t let you write on the external sd card

  • thanks, got white one.
Very good build, has bloody good main camera.
But as the name says, it is compact, so screen is relatively small compare to s4 upgrade, but still bigger than iphone 5
