I work 50m away, going to bageting one of these for sure…

    • Wow, that was bad….in a good way :)

      • +16

If I was dropping puns like that I'd be worried the moderators might banh mi.

        • +7

Ahahaha nothing like a good pun before rolling out of bed.

  • Are they any nice?

    • +2

      Brace yourself, they are delicious.
      English …..much?

    • +7

      they are delicious
      esp pork or dimsum versions

however i am annoyed that these (like dumplings) have now become a hipster fad.

Asians eat these + dumplings because we were poor.

Making them hipster just makes them unaffordable

wow new Vietnamese chain? whats your normal price for 1 Baget? cause they're super overpriced at roll'D

    • I love Vietnamese food and I admire the industriousness of Vietnamese people with all of these food chains, but I wish the current phonetic and inappropriate apostrophe craze ends and we can get back or even near to correct spelling.
BTW I think Grill'd may have started this.

      Its baguette! BAGUETTE!

      • +2

i think they made up weird words so that they can register a trademark, they cant do that with a generic descriptive name like Vietnamese Baguette

      • +1

We are not associated with Grill'd.

        • "I think Grill'd may have started this."
Refers to the trend of phonetic spelling and inappropriate apostrophes, not "started this restaurant".

    • Ba'gets are priced at $6.50

    • Yeah I find Roll'd have stale rolls as well. Fob Rolls in the arcade on burke street has good ones (and they have a $10, rice paper roll, drink and banh mi deal). N. Lee Bakery has decent ones at the top of little collins. Kenny's is ok too. Roll'd is a great business model, but they don't have the best banh mi in the CBD.

  • "ba'get"?
    Thought it was Klingon…

  • +4

    Don't bag'it til you've tried it.

  • Do we get a coupon for liking? Or need to show our FB page?

    • +1

Just show that you've liked us and a free Ba'get is yours

      • -2

Hmmm… was going to visit your store until I read that a FB like is required for the free bread roll.

  • These guys were at White Night. One word. Delicious. Far better then Roll'd!

    • +5

      Better than Roll'd doesn't really mean much…

      • I enjoyed them when I received that free meal they gave away at Jam Factory. I found it high quality and fresh… the staff were great too.

  • can we select different type or just pork only?

I wanna know… all these Viet places opening up around the Mel CBD.. Are they owned and operated by Vietnamese or clever (white) folk charging $8 per pop for what you can get for $3.50 (and in my experience much better) if you know where to go. I am new to Melbourne and in my experience when it comes to Viet food… you don't necessarily get what you pay for…

    • I always see this - you do realise it's impossible to turn over profit or even stay afloat if you are charging the same price as the suburbs. Rent is 2-3 times higher if not more. If you could, someone would already. I don't have a business or do I work in the industry but have always known this.

      • +1

        Exactly.
True too for most larger shopping centres. Resnt is huge and the consumers pays for it.
There seems to be an explosion of resourceful people starting new franchises though. Kind of an endless supply. I see them all the time. Some live, some die.

        • I'm interested as to whether it is predominantly Vietnamese or others behind these ventures. Don't get me wrong I am all for it, and respect them as its gutsy as hell. There must be at least 50 Vietnamese restaurants on Victoria St in Richmond alone, thousands in Victoria… whoever first thought I'll be different, serve Viet street food in a nice decor/setting is a smart cookie…. if they do it right.

Places like Ms Chu - incredibly over rated. But there are a few new ones on Docklands which aren't too bad…

    • Name any Vietnamese owner charging $3.50 for Banh Mi located around CBD ? That's right, none. Coz rent is crazy high. Landlords charge you the same either you are Vietnamese or white folks.

      • +1

I know of at least three places in Sydney's CBD that sell banh mi for $4 or less. Two of those places are smack bang on George St.

I agree that it's not always possible to sell them at that price in the city, but it is possible :P I personally could never justify paying more than $4.50 for one. Some places sell them for $9 in our CBD and they don't even look that nice. Once they try to posh it up by making the ingredients fancy, it's no longer a banh mi to me (and doesn't satisfy the craving) :(

Dammit now I really want a banh mi.

      • None that I know of, but they're $4 in Footscray at Nhu Lan.

  • +2

I finish work at 5:30 and will be going straight there, can you guarantee me a free ba'get, store rep?

  • Best place I ever had a banh mi in Melbourne is at the Viet bakery in Frankston, right across the road from the train station. If you survive being mugged, a banh mi is only $3.50 and they are AWESOME.

If you're ever in Vietnam same thing of course can be had on the streets there for about 50c (plus a cheap ozbargain airfare!) :)

    • A sanger in Franger.
Bad for your digestion unless you are driving through though - dodgy aggro bastards down that way, gotta watch them.

  • Anyone got one yet?

  • +1

Just had one of these… Not bad but I prefer the pork rolls from N Lee Bakery on little Collins… Though the service was excellent.. No line at 11am.

    • +2

      There's a line now…

This is the line in-store for context.

They're handing out free Pandan tea for those in line. Nice.

This is what you can choose from. I got through the line pretty quickly (about 10 min). Chicken is the most popular.

Update: the line has doubled as of 12:30. Get in quick, guys!

      • do you work the next door by any chance? lol

        • Haha nope. But I am in one of the nearby Regus Business Lounges ;)

  • Got a customised one with no chilli, quick and tasty

  • Eating mine now; tasty overall. They had a choice of Classic, Chicken and Tofu. Bread is nice. I don't usually have classic, so I can't compare filling to other places. Went at 11:45, small line, but was very quick.

Also, they don't check whether you liked them or not (too many people).

  • As of now, they only offer chicken or tofu. Also there's a big queue.

  • The line at 1220 was almost halfway towards bourke street. Only took 10 minutes in line and 5 minutes to eat.

    • Not sure if I'm particularly hungry today, but after my classic roll, I'm still kind of hungry!

Just had one. As someone who eats at Nhu Lan fairly frequently, my expert verdict is that it's as good or better than any other I've had in Melbourne.

Looks like they bake the bread fresh in the back room, mine was still warm and very crunchy.

Filling for the mixed ham (original flavour) is authentic as well, even includes the ear terrine which a lot of non-viet places skip.

A+ for flavour B for value at the regular price of $6.50

    • Good evaluation. I am always impressed by take-away (or even cafe/restaurant food) that has flavour – everything is usually so bland these days.

    • Ear terrine? I don't think I've ever seen that in a banh mi. You don't just mean pork terrine do you? Very curious to hear more!

  • 15 mins wait time at 1:17pm. Just got mine. Chicken and tofu available.

feedback: tasty meat and bread (i like it crispy).

  • Went there and arrived at 12:00… wait was about 10 mins.

Went for the classic. Tasty and fresh. Bahn Mi are never quite big enough for me and this was the same.

Could see the oven at the back of the store with bread baking.. so the bread is definitely fresh. By the time we left, the queue was getting pretty big, stretching down the road towards Bourke St.

Would go back if in the area and after a quick bite.

  • No wait whatsoever at 2pm. They gave me 3. Classic meat dominates the Tofu. But it was always going to. Fresh and tasty!
