SO, how are people enjoying their next-gen consoles?

I am sure there are a few people on here who took advantage of some deals and bargains to grab either an Xbox One or a PS4 (or both, if you're lucky enough).

I thought perhaps OzBargainers could share their experiences so far & those of us who haven't entered next-gen console gaming could live vicariously through you. :)

Comments

        • I would expect them to be around for at least 6 years, with various tweaks to the hardware throughout this time.

    • Because people like you play PC games.

  • +6

I bought an Xbox One at launch and own Ryse, Forza 5, Dead Rising 3, Assassin's Creed IV and FIFA 14 for it. I have enjoyed all of them to some extent, but really haven't put a massive amount of hours into them (though I'm stilly happily plugging away at Assassin's Creed and have had a bunch of great FIFA matches with a mate). I've played more of my Xbox 360 (playing through MGS: Peace Walker before I play Ground Zeroes) in the past week than I have of my Xbox One all year. However the lion's share of my gaming has been dedicated to my PC. I've spent more time playing the Altis Life mod for ARMA III in the past few weeks than I have on my Xbox One since I bought it. Also been loving Titanfall on PC (which I bought because not all of my mates have Xbox Ones yet). Hell I'm even loving Hearthstone and indie games like Insurgency (great FPS if you haven't heard of it).

I don't own a PS4 (yet) because I honestly think the game line-up at the moment is pretty abysmal (I'm not anti-Sony at all, this is just how I see it). Infamous Second Son, looks quite beautiful (especially character face animations), but I'm not a fan of the franchise. The first game was fun, the second game was a pretty bullshit rehash and the third game doesn't look to be trying anything too different.

My Wii U has been gathering dust for a while, but I want to get back into Pikmin 3 because I was seriously enjoying that. I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaally want a new Zelda. A high-def Zelda title to challenge Ocarina of Time as my favourite game of all time, is my gaming dream.

I'm sure this will change when some decent exclusives are released for the new consoles. For example, I will buy a PS4 the day a new Uncharted game is released - or The Last Guardian (wishful thinking)- or a follow up to The Last of Us - or ANYTHING BY NAUGHTY DOG (pls make new Crash Bandicoot).

My 3DS is also getting a smashing. I love that I can play back-catalogue DS games on it as well as the excellent 3DS games that seem to be released quite regularly. Making my way through the Professor Layton series and A Link Between Worlds at the moment.

I just love videogames (as you might be able to tell from the tone of this comment). I don't care what platform they are on - if it's a good game, it's a good game.

    • Yeah waiting for mario kart and smash bros for my wii u.
Just got professor layton vs phoneix wright for the 3DS (also havnt finished a link between worlds).
PS4 i just cant justify yet considering the games it currently has.

      • +1

A link Between Worlds is the only reason I bought a 3DS and I'm so glad I did.

  • Nothing worth playing on any of them yet. Will likely wait till sometime around August onwards later in the year, when an actual next-gen game is developed and released for the PS4.

    • +1

People have an interesting negging strategy. This is true, people, there aren't any next gen games on either console. Unless the definiton of 'next-gen' is "having games that are 3 hours long and packed full of necessary in-app-purchases".

But hey… At least they're pretty!

      • +1

Yep… currently "pretty" at a peasantly 720p, upscaled.

Seriously, what is the point owning the first edition model of either new console, when neither has any games on them that take advantage of the console, or are any better than the X360/PS3 versions of them?

        • +1

The Last Of Us showed us that we're YEARS away from needing these consoles.

        • Speak for yourself, bud. The 30fps infuriated me. Thank God it's coming to ps4.

      • People who haven't played infamous or Warframe are always so quick to write them off.

        • I like warframe, I just wish it had more people at once vs enemies, its mayhem.

  • +1

I bought an xbox one and ps4 but I'm still playing ps3 :)

    • +2

Not surprised! The PS3's back catalogue is ridonculously good.

    • +3

Hence I haven't bother with the next gen yet. Also playing ps3

  • Got the Xbox One
My Mates have it as well
But they have been slow at buying the new releases
So not enjoying it at the moment , really prefer a good multiplayer party which we used to get on the 360

Even Titanfall hasn't got them back into it, which currently I am enjoying but playing with strangers (ewww)
Maybe when Halo or Destiny comes out?
So imo buying the Xbox one was a bit of a waste , but sure to enjoy it in the future
    Hope so anyway LOL

Cant comment on Wii u or PS3 or PS4 , never owned one

    • I revel in the buyers remorse I sense from this post.

  • +4

I am bias to Nintendo, but I enjoy every medium.

I own the Wii U & PS4 from current gen. I'm enjoying both a great deal! The 3DS is a different beast, love that to bits, but I'll only share my take on the new machines.

So far this has been my experience:

    PS4:

    • Very fast in terms of switching between the UI and game, it's instant!
    • Party chat is fantastic, finally able to plug a headset into the controller
    • Not many games at the moment, but inFAMOUS & Resogun are fun. I also have Killzone and a number of other games but not exclusive. So, no shortage of games for me
    • I'm impressed with the graphic leap and the UI is rather snappy
    • Love the upgrades to trophies (rarity percentage) and profile pic (uses FB profile pic)
    • The PSN shop now loads instantly, no more waiting a minute for it to load (as on PS3)
    • Love the controller

    • Sharing functionality is okay at best. I would have liked a Miiverse experience as I don't want to share on Facebook (discussions with gamers who are playing the same game is preferred). So I opt for Twitter instead. It's often quite slow though. The video edits are cool, but you need a fast internet connection to upload, otherwise do it after you have played

    • Still yet to import basic PS3 features such as premium avatars
    • I upgraded my HDD to a hybrid, loading times are much better, but I feel as maybe this should be standard? Loading times can be long
    • I don't like how games need to be installed on the HDD, I feel like I'm running out of room when more games come out

Overall: Love the PS4, really enjoying the experience.

    Wii U:

    • Amazing selection of games at the moment, so much to play: Super Mario 3D World, Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U, DKC: Tropical Freeze, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, LEGO City Undercover, ZombiU, The Wonderful 101, Nano Assault Neo, Nes Remix ec. So I am having a ball with it at the moment
    • Miiverse is a fantastic social network for games. I share all the time, have great discussions and interact with some great people!
    • Wii U Chat is like Skype, it's cool, I like how it works
    • As much as people don't like the GamePad, I think it's great. From second screen maps and off screen TV play I use often
    • Ability to add second drive, is a great feature. I can have a few HDDs without relying on one
    • Different control options I have been using
    • Backwards compatibility is a huge plus
    • Great options for local multiplayer

    • Load times are ridiculous, biggest problem

    • Some eShop titles are too expensive, over $10 for SNES game? Almost $7 for a NES game? Come on Nintendo
    • If I buy a title on Wii U available for 3DS, say Virtual Console title, I would have to buy it TWICE to play on either system
    • No achievements yet, why have them in game and not linked to our profiles?
    • If I lose my Wii U or 3DS, I lose all my games as they're attached to the console

Overall: Love the Wii U, it's an awesome system!

I like how PS4 and Wii U are completely different. I wouldn't say one is better over the other because they bring different things to the table.

If you asked me to pick, I would say the Wii U because of all the exclusive games at the moment, Miiverse and Mario Kart 8 next month!

    • +1

I love the opportunity the Gamepad brings for devs to really be original and come up with some excellent mechanics. Penny Arcade's brainchild DnD game where one person plays the dungeon master and 4 wii-mote players go through the game that the DM gamepadder controls and creates is still something I'm hoping someone latches onto.

      But.

I hate that devs are shying away from it, opting out for prettier graphics and in-app purchases instead of trying to innovate and dev for the underdog console.

Nintendo's silly decisions aren't helping anything either. "Hey let's give Zelda to Tecmo Koei so they can make a Dynasty Warriors reskin INSTEAD OF GIVING IT TO RETRO!"

      • +1 Definitely agree with your points!

I would love for a game to come out on the Wii U that uses the idea you suggested, would be so awesome.

      • Isn't Dynasty Warriors a Tecmo Koei series though? Even if they gave it to Retro, they'd probably still need Tecmo Koei's input for the game.

Or do you mean doing an actual Zelda game? Because I'm pretty sure they are already - not to mention it's developed inhouse by Nintendo themselves.

        • Yes, but, the point is, if they gave it to Retro, we wouldn't be getting a Dynasty Warriors reskin. The opinion of the Zelda fanbase is largely mixed. If you don't like Dynasty Warriors, you won't like Hyrule Warriors. If you don't like Zelda, you won't like Hyrule Warriors. Arguably, there hasn't been a good Dynasty Warriors game in 10 years.

But all we can do is wait, and hope we don't get another Team Ninja product.

I think Nintendo said they gave Retro something else now that Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is done. Who wants to bet that it's not a new Star Fox?

        • +1

Hyrule Warriors luckily isn't a game in the main series. Its a spin off. But I would like Retro to make a Zelda game from start to end. That would be awesome.

    • +4

Oh look, an attention seeker. Probably has mummy issues.

        • +7

I have a gaming rig. I'm just not an attention seeker who wants to make an ass of myself.

        • -4

You mean that junk Core 2 garbage? You call that gaming?

        • +1

          Good one ;)

        • +4

ethereal88 is one of the special people of ozbargain, dont mind him

        • +1

          I don't mind him, he's amusing.

    • Huh? you're going on like your 780 Ti being extremely expensive is a good thing? This is ozbargain mate - people are far more likely to be impressed by how good value something is.

      • +1

Ethereal88 never meets budget in suggested computer builds, price vs performance is not his thing it seems.

        • He's just a dummy.

  • This Gen is much more affordable than entering the last gen. I paid $999 for my phat 60Gb PS3 which was BC compatible (and I never used that feature). The PS2 was $750. I got my ps3 for $455. I've got a gaming rig, but think the PS4 will get more use.

Rockstar should port GTA V as I haven't played it yet and are hanging.
Need for speed rivals sucks ……..
Tomb Raider Definitive - looks awesome!!!
COD Ghosts is enjoyable for me, am I the only one that likes the campaign?

    • +1

I sold my copy of GTA half finished. I'm sure it is coming to this gen. CoD Ghosts, you might be the only person that likes the game full stop ;)

    • +1

      I enjoyed Rivals :/

    • There are rumours of GTA V hitting PC, PS4 and Xbox One in June, not sure how credible they are though.

  • +1

I've gone truly next gen… rather than PS4, XBONE or WiiU, I have an Oculus Rift DK1. Virtual Reality's making a comeback!

  • +3

I've had the PS4 since launch and I'm not impressed. I've had a look at other current colsoles and they too are lacking. There are hardly any games for any of them and the few games they have got have run their course. It won't be till the end of this year before any real good games come out that begin to tap into the real power of each platform as developers learn how to use the tech better. I'm hanging out for FF15 and Destiny. When Zelda U comes out I may buy a WiiU and then buy yhe rerelease of Windwaker. I've been playing CoD Ghosts but it's pretty much the same as every CoD since MW3.

    • For a real Zelda game, we might be waiting a while. The Tecmo Koei Zelda game looks thoroughly disappointing to me, but I'm not a big fan of Dynasty Warriors so that's understandable. There is no announcement of a real Zelda game… as of yet.

There are a few gems on each so far. Ps4 has inFamous and The Order 1866 (soon, but the real quality of which is yet to be fully determined), Wii-U has Pikmin and Wonderful 101, (which is set to be a cult classic and a personal favourite of mine, but not a console mover, unfortunately…) and the Xbone has…….. erm…. IT HAS KINECT SPAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWTZ.

Though some would argue that it has Titanfall…. And Peggle 2.

And the PC has everything and then some.

  • -1

I am happy with my Xbox One, completely addicted to Garden Warfare at the moment. It often gets used for Netflix, and I have my Foxtel IQHD box running through it. Love how I only need to turn the Xbox on, and it automatically turns my TV and Foxtel box on. Automatic sign in with Kinect is a nice gimmick. Dead Rising 3 and Peggle 2 are also nice exclusives.

  • Lack of any good games makes it too early to write off these expensive machines. Ninntedo 3DS XL is the best toy going around at the moment.

  • +4

How about this? So far I see no point to buy the next gen console. Happy camper with Wii and PS3

    Too expensive to invest atm

    • Smart choice.

  • I just brought the wii u skylanders pack few weeks ago playing AC3 in bed.. i still havent played my beyond two souls, castlevania lords of shadows 2. Ps4 with AC4 is still unopened. I admit it was worth the wait for the wii u price drop 248 big w deal. after i am done with AC3 jumping on to SM3D world. So my next/current gen (ps4) will have to wait till i am done with my wii u and ps3 games..

    • I got the same deal. 248 was about as much as I was willing to pay for a Wii U.

  • +1

for me its too early to be spending $500 on these

there's no overwhelming IP on either consoles that made me jump

i'm enjoying my ps3 while my kid loves the 360

i will go to ps4 when they get their act together with GT7 and Drive Club and perhaps Wipeout 4k

Strangely Xbox has some awesome IP if they bothered eg. PGR and Shenmue

Forza 5 has poisoned it for a generation of Forza fans and we hope Forza 6 gets back to the brilliant content that was Forza 4 but as it stands Xbox isnt doing it for me

    lets see after E3

    • Hope you like microtransactions because Forza5 showed us that it takes real inspiration from the iOS and Android game Real Racing 2 in that you should have to pay for everything, except this game isn't already free, it's 90 bucks!

      Yay next gen.

      • +1

        i played RR3 on android

        its a solid game

i would pay real money for a real version of that game on android or console if they made it work with a controller

its a shame, there's some real talent in that game trying to get out from under a mountain of fees

        • Talent is not rewarded in the modern gaming industry considering all you need to do to get a paycheck is make a generic fps game or clone someone else. Remember! Don't innovate otherwise nobody will buy it!

  • +1

I bought a PS4 on the second shipment. It's sitting their idol sadly, I'm still waiting for a decent game to come out - I had hoped that Infamous might be it but the reviews have been mixed. So I'm disappointed I bothered getting it so early. I've also signed up to PSN for the 'free games library' - and they all have sucked so far.

On the plus side I grabbed DS2 for my 360 and that's been great so I havn't been too worried.

    • i raise you xbox one that has no free games

or 360 which has free games with gold that are like $5 on disc because they are 5 yrs old

      yeah

free… nothing good is free, except maybe resogun… and fez… and hotline miami and…

      • You missed Dwarf Fortress. Free all day, every day, forever.

    • +1

Have you actually played inFamous yourself? I've had two mates that couldn't put it down and didn't stop raving on about it for the launch week. If I didn't have such a backlog to juggle with Uni and work, I'd be able to give you a first hand opinion, but from what I can tell, the game is pretty solid.

Either way, this doesn't really change your point; both the PS4 and Xbox One have been rather lacking in both selection and ground breaking games. While I've personally enjoyed the PS Plus titles, which admittedly I probably wouldn't have played/purchased outside of the service, along with the small selection of PS4 games I've bought, like you, I'm back on a last gen console playing Dark Souls 2.

Ultimately, getting a next gen console now is a luxury, and with a ridiculously good selection of games on PS3/Xbox360 still, justifying the purchase of one is a little hard to do.

  • +1

Happily playing 2048 on my Nexus 5. Next gen?

  • I really like my ps4 but in retrospect I probably could have held out another 6 months. I don't regret buying it because I'm one of the few that got one at launch but there's just not a whole heap of titles out yet and it feels like its collecting alot more dust than a $550 machine should be.

I've got infamous, Killzone and AC IV (which I've already finished on PC). Killzone had some pretty cool moments and amazing graphics. Infamous was good but felt fairly short. Looking forward to Watch Dogs.

Dissapointed as hell Dark souls 2 isn't releasing for the next gen systems (WTF?!).

    • -1

If it were on Xbox One, trading boss souls would be a microtransaction, swinging your sword would NEED to be swung with Kinect, and you'd need to pay a suscription fee to join a covenant.

    • Chances are Dark Souls 2 will find its way to next-gen. There are statements all around the net from "We haven't considered it" to "It won't come before Christmas", so maybe it'll pop up early 2015. The PC community managed to get Dark Souls 1 ported after it had been released for so long, and given that a PC version of Dark Souls 2 was developed, it shouldn't (theoretically) be too hard to get it onto next-gen.

  • +1

Happy with my wii and PS3 at the moment, but might have to get a wii u for mario kart :)

  • -1

I have both the PS4 and Xbox One. I love them both. But right now the PS4 is lacking titles. Sure they give us great free games through Playstation Plus. But no games worth playing. Exclusives lacking at this stage. Xbox one getting alot more use by myself personally and my girlfriend loves the xbox simple to use Netflix and youtube app. And also she likes ……… the kinect…….

    • infamous and Warframe are worth it alone for me so far. I've put 170 hours into Warframe which is a lot for me. Also I was really happy about Don't Starve which I believe is another console exclusive for PS4 (I know it's Steam as well)

The only exclusive on xbone that would interest me is Forza but by most accounts its a shallow version compared to previous games and has also embraced micro transactions.

      • I know I'm going to get negged for this, but it's not console exclusive if it's on steam as well by very definition of the word.

        • Exclusive among the consoles. I get your point but for many people PC gaming is just not even an option. I have an older brother who is very wealthy but his interest in the internet stops at iPad really. I managed to get him to buy a laptop after he saw me using my PC several times for things that interested him so he bought a MacBook Air. For gaming he wouldn't know where to start on a Mac especially using KBM so he buys a PS4, point is not everyone is computer literate or savvy.

        • +2

I know I'm going to get negged for THIS, but if a user is oblivious to tech, that still doesn't make a game exclusive. Well I'm just an argumentative petty prick today, ain't I? lol.

          Buy laptop.
          Install steam.
          Play teh games.
          ???
          Profit.

I would argue it's almost easier than the iOS store. But I'd lose the argument lol.

        • +1

Yeah you'd lose that. To use my Xbox controller with CS GO for instance was a pita so for those who have no idea what they are doing it would prove impossible. As much as I love what Steam are doing there are things that are not quite there yet in terms of accessibility.

        • Steam is as good as it gets for PC-based digital distribution - but it definitely doesn't hold a candle to Apple's or Android's respective stores.

I've got to ask though… why the heck are you using a controller for CS?

        • +1

          Cos I'm a console slave.

  • +1

anyone playing batman arkham city on ps3 ps+? is it just me or is this game so boring o.0

    • It's just you! But then again I am a fan of the Bat.

    • If you've played Asylum and you're a cynical ass like me, every subsequent installation into the franchise is a larger disappointment by leaps and bounds.

      • I thought Asylum was great. I thought City was AMAZING. I thought Origins was… meh - haven't even finished it.

        • I enjoyed the story of Asylum much more tbh. I seriously dislike the Catwoman content of City. I was enjoying Origins until my save bugged out and every time I tried to play it the framerate made it unplayable (PS3)

        • I had Origins on PS3 but I took it back because I've never seen a game copy/pasted quite as shamelessly as that.

Plus, despite being a prequel, he still had all of the items he had only developed by end of Arkham City what? Plot-holes, shoddy programming, and a shoe-horned Joker that wasn't even Mark Hamil. No THANKYOU, I will just remember Asylum as the best Metroidvania featuring Batman since ever.

        • The idea of a non-Hamill/Conroy Batman game was that it was supposedly to help signify that this was indeed taking place a long time before the later games. I can't recall the weapons from AC that you are talking about though? Not as I would let something like that ruin a game for me tbh.

  • Need more games for the PS4, some RPG would be nice.
