Noice. Cheapest 280x on staticice by $40, and XFX is a good brand:

    http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=r9+280x&spo…

I have a 280x, loving it. Nice to be able to just set everything to max and get 60 fps in every game (so far).

  • would it need a 750w PSU for this?

    • +1

generally speaking no, but it depends on the rest of your computer configuration. I run a 280x on a corsair HX620 with no problems

Quality 500W with 12V Output over 25A should be able to handle it.

      • If your 500W PSU's 12v is rated at 25A I wouldn't trust it, that's basically SHAW quality.

        • It can have multiple 12 rails at 25A.

I usually plug all my details on to a PSU calculator just to make sure.

There are a few out there, I have had success with this one as it get updated parts.

    • Corsair 550w here, no probs. I pull about 360W from the wall under max load. Gigabyte R9 280x (the BF4 bundle one that has 3 fans).

    • No single GPU system right now (and in the foreseeable future, given smaller fabrication and lower TDP) needs more than a 700W PSU (not even dual-core GPUs like the GTX Titan or R9 290X).

A quality 650W PSU is more than enough for 90% of gamers.

I running the equivalent of this card (a 7970) on a 550W PSU with zero issues and a significant overclock.

  • Got one, thank you OP, was sad when yesterday I missed the PCCG deal as it went out of stock when I vacillate.

I'm confused with the price first. Please edit back the title and add "$" sign.

  • PLE are the best PC parts retailer in Perth. Not always the cheapest but usually have stock and great customer service. MSY won't help you much with warranty in my experience, happy to use them for consumables like DVDs and cheap thumb drives but PLE usually always win my business for the expensive parts.

I don't work for PLE and will use PCCG but postage costs, wait times & warranty via post can be painful.

  • is this one better than my asus hd7950 or worse?

    • -6

Based on the comparison here, it looks like your HD7950 is a better performer.

    • +2

A bit better. The 280X's are rebranded 7970 GHz editions. Really not worth the upgrade, IMO (I have a 7950 as well).

      Edit: apparently not.

    • A bit better, maybe around 15-20% higher framerates, see for yourself:

      http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-rev…

Note: this next one only shows the faster 7950 "boost", so yours will be slower:

      http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1033?vs=1041

    • Asus seem to have OC and Top designations on their cards to signify whether a card is wasted than bench.

Also, there's probably a difference in drivers now and when those reviews were done and this will affect benchmarks.

I don't think it's a substantial jump that makes it worth changing. However, going to a 290 or 290x would be a different story.

    • Both the 7950 and 7970/280X are okay for gaming as of right now (though even now a few titles are just too much for the 7950; like TWR:2, Arma III and Metro Last Light), but they'll be struggling badly to push a solid 60FPS in newer games by the end of the year.

Really their life cycle is approaching it's end right now (if you're the sort of person who plays games when they come out @ 1920x1080 with all the eye candy), and given this 280X is for all intents and purposes a 7970GE, I would look for something more future-proof if you're upgrading right about now.

  • Should I buy this or r9 290x?

    • Just go up the middle and get the 290 ;)
Newest tech like the 290x, but saves you some cash. Just a little less raw speed.

  • 29.5 cm length. Arghhh
    back to gtx 760

  • +1

This is the GPU that should've been in the Xbox One.

  • What was the PCCG deal OP is talking about? Link please?

    edit: found, shouldve serached

  • was tempted to get this rather then the 270x

  • Good price but XFX usually run pretty hot and loud compared to asus/nvidia/sapphire.

  • Ordered yesterday morning using startrack and got it right here this morning, superfast consider it's from WA to NSW.
The card is excellent, no more coil whine like my previous GTX 770 ( so I have to return it), it's quiet and not too hot.

    BTW, PSW is Aerocool 700W

  • Thanks OP, spurred me on to upgrade my 4 year old gaming build as an early birthday present ;)

  • AMD used different chips in their older and newer 280x. The newer is more power efficient new tech. The older is just a re-hashed 7970. I wonder which this is.
