Self Exclusion from OzBargain Club

I have a moral dilemna.
I was shopping in a fishing and camping store and one of the items I bought was a fishing rod that had a marked price of $33. As well, this brand of rod had across the board 20% off. So about $26.40 after discount. Good.
After purchasing the rod and several other much needed items, I checked the docket. The store charged me $55 for the rod. I went back and they checked. The manager was called and he said $55 was was 20% off its retail price of $68.75. He didn't look happy, but didn't need any coaxing to give me the rod at the marked price. I was happy to get the rod at around half price……
But would not a genuine Oz Bargainer have pressed for a further 20% off the $33? I feel I've let the side down a bit. The killer blow was there to be struck, but I wimped out. Do I need to toughen up or just dismiss myself from the Oz Bargain website for being too timid.

Depends if the 20% applied to the rod or not, sometimes they do have 20% off sales which don't apply to "clearance items"…etc. Check the terms and conditions.

    • yeah usually its 20% off rrp unless it had a 20% off marked prices (myer sometimes have these)

Obtaining OzBargain perfection is something I doubt many people experience. It is always a work in progress. You didn't get as big a bargain as you could have, but you got better than most people would have, so be content with that for now and learn from your mistake.

I think it's more important that the sale was concluded and both sides were happy. If you got your way, you would have maybe behaved badly (demanding and pushy) and made the manager feel unhappy. This way, you still got a good deal and the manager made some money… and often the retail shops need the profit to keep up with the overheads and pay employees.

Sounds like you're a nice, laid back kinda person. You walked away spending slightly more than you expected (based on ticket price and discount) but you were still pleased. That's pretty cool.

I say be glad you're not easily slighted or uptight about small things like that. I could imagine many people being angered by the error and then demand the further 20% off. Sure, they might end up walking away paying less than you after a debate with the manager, but they're also stressing themselves out in the process. I'd rather have your response and personality… take things in your stride and still be happy.

I wouldn't have bothered arguing for a few more dollars off, tbh. Some battles are more trouble than they're worth :)

I would ask, but I wouldn't push for it if they seemed to baulk. Sometimes you don't want to look like a complete cheapskate or create bad karma.

See I probably would not have bothered getting the extra discount, but then I see myself as more Ozbargain General Infantry. But there are others here, OzBargain Special Forces if you will, who would absolutely do it.

Practice Practice and Practice. This would have been a great opportunity to practice. Sure you could have given in after a while, and walked out paying the same as you did. THe question is more, how much does it stress you? If you are happy just to practice, and letting it go after a while or if it stresses you out. I think pushing the boundaries little by little helps you gettng there. And last words If I had to choose between me getting a discount and the manager getting angry, at me not getting a discount and the manager being happy, I'll choose me getting happy ( hoping he does not remember my face, or me having to go back to that shop )

    • What price range are you looking at, for the different components?

    • I might be tempted too.

lol… gonna show op how it should have been done?? :)

  • u failed us

  • I will remain a foot soldier. I can see that commando status is not my calling. And as I always seem to need fishing gear, i wouldn't want to have to go undercover every time I went shopping.

  • marked price of $33

Was that the original tagged price or was that the marked price on a sticker, stuck on the tag?

  • Original tagged price . The tagger made an error .

  • I try and press the point for a while. But I've found when retailers make mistakes like that, they usually make an excuse and refuse to honour the better price.
