User-Submitted Referral Code/Link Requests & Updates

Original Post

This morning we pushed out a new user-submitted referral changes. This is an update to the previous attempt in 2012. Problem with the previous one is that it's difficult to add new stores that support referral benefits, and the feature ended up only supporting GreenManGaming and not being used much by our users here. What happened afterwards were wiki pages created for each online shop. Yes it's an interesting use of the wiki pages, but

  • Not a good idea to let any member to be able to edit everyone's code.
  • Free-form might not be the most ideal format, and hard to police everyone to edit in the same format.
  • The list is ordered rather than randomised.

What we have done now is having a single place for you to put in all your referral codes. Go to your Settings page and click on the referrals tab. You should be presented with a list of "stores" that we currently have referral support. For the comprehensive list of stores / products supported, please go to the referral wiki page.

New ones should be easily added as well if the method of referral is via a referral link (i.e. unique URL per referrer). Feel free to submit new ones in the comments. I need

  • The URL format for the referral link
  • Instructions to get the referral link
  • Benefit for the referrers and referees.

Another reminder that Affiliate Links and Referral Links are different and we do not allow affiliate links here on OzBargain.

Once a referral system has been set up for that domain, for every deal posted to that domain, a grey box will appear below the content and above the Share buttons containing a randomised referral link AND OP's referral link (if OP has submitted one for that domain and the deal has hit the front page vote minimum - updated 9/5/16). The benefits for the referrers and referees are also shown so people know what they (and you) are getting. For example this Amaysim offer I submitted. In this case including your own referral link and link to wiki becomes redundant.

Yes this is still in beta and needs improvement. Some potential issues / possible improvements:

  • Since you do not really need to put referral link in your content, you can submit deals with your link in the referral box without the deal being marked as "referral post". This might lead to abuse of people posting excessive deals from the stores offering referral. I shall look at ways to prevent it. I don't want to mark them as referral post at the moment because previously submitter can pick and choose whether to include his/her referral link. Now it's always included. 9/5/16 Update: Your deal must hit the front page vote minimum (currently 30) to show. This was previously 5, before being changed to the front page vote minimum.

  • Referral-code / coupon-code type referrals are not yet supported. For example Budget Direct, Rabobank, etc. We can potentially generate a popup containing the code when people click on "OP" or "random".

  • A good idea to let people pick and choose? For example some people might not want to use OP's referral link, not a random one either but from a list of friends.

So here it is. Give it a try guys! I will start removing some of the wiki pages later today. Meanwhile, please leave feedback in the comments.

  • I would like to propose this website to add to the OZB referral system, please. https://goldfieldsgames.com.au/

    • What does the referrer and/or referee get? What do the referral links/codes look like?

      • Referee gets $5 instantly and referrer gets $10 if referee orders. Referral Link looks like this: https://i.refs.cc/19gngVBC?smile_ref=eyJzbWlsZV9zb3VyY2UiOiJ…

      • Referee gets instant $5 and referrer gets $10 if referee orders. I can’t post the link here because it’s getting deleted seen as spam.

        • I can’t post the link here because it’s getting deleted seen as spam.

          As per the the OP,

If your comment is automatically unpublished due to the referral link, do not worry, moderators can still see it and will republish it before replying.

          Goldfields Toys & Games added.

          • @neil: Ok thanks. I accidentally ignored the instructions to remove the end part of the link. Now it works.

  • When trying to get an EASI referral, it seems there are a lot of outdated or broken links, example being the one below - goes to a 404 page.
Since a 404 is not helping anyone (including the referrer), can these invalid ones be removed from the pool?
I've had to click several times to find a valid referral.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/easi.com.au
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/api/referral/415
    https://act.melbdelivery.com/user/invite_easi/user_register?…

    • Had a look at EASI app and they are now offering a 6 character code which is a bit easier to manage. Have expired all codes and notified everyone in the system.

      • Thank you

  • The Keysmart referral format has changed also
The new referral format that the site gave me is
    https://i.refs.cc/4FLB6Yfq?smile_ref=eyJzbWlsZV9zb3VyY2UiOiJ…

    • this one have very few takers so i dont mind if this doesn't get updated.

    • Updated format.

      Are the benefits still:

Referrer gets $10 credit. Referee gets $10 off 1st order of $35+.

      ?

      • Referee receives $10, Referrer gets 1,000 keys (worth $10)
Just tried my own code in a cart, and there doesn't seem to be a minimum spend. Had a $9.9 product that is now $0 before shipping is calculated.
Took it all the way to payment page but didn't proceed.

        • Cheers, have updated.

  • Furthr App please

The URL format for the referral link: https://furthr.app.link/SEnXmcYSTpb

    Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.furthr&con…

Then (1) open the app, (2) click your image in the top right (3) go to refer a friend and (4) click social media to access the direct download referral link

Benefit for the referees: The referee gets 7% cashback with Furthr's partners (instead of the standard 5%). There's no time limit to this, it's works like an upgraded account.
Benefit for the referrers: Referrer gets 1% of the referee's cashback for 12 months (this is not taken out of the referee's 7% but on top).

    • Furthr has been added.

  • For Heritage bank, theres a targeted promo for NSW, when referred by an existing member

    https://www.heritage.com.au/refer-for-100?utm_source=faceboo…

To qualify for the $100 payment, the new customer must open a Heritage savings or transaction account at a NSW Heritage branch and supply the member number of the referring customer when joining.

    • Updated Heritage. Just added the new $100 program to the existing win $1000 referral program as they appear to be the same process.

  • Can we please add Billy bubbles to the referrals list? They're a sodastream etc 3rd party alternative with home delivery. Limited to Melbourne metro at the moment but they're still fairly new and could grow. Referral bonus is a free Melbourne metro delivery worth $5 for referrer and referred party. Could we put "Chope" into the referral system, it's the equivalent to "the fork" or "eat club" but for asian countries (including but not limited to hong kong, singapore, bali), I'm gonna go nuts with it for my trip to Phuket.

you get "chope-dollars" when u book and than can use them at restruants (very similar to "the fork" Yums) 400 chope dollars = $10

both referrer and referee get 300 chope dollars

my referral link for reference not sure how it changes between profiles: https://cho.pe/s70orgjag

  • Globird energy appears to have changed their referral system to now allow users to share a link, once they've entered their account number and phone/or/email.
Can the Ozbargain system be updated so we can enter the referral link?

    The format appears to be:

    https://signup.globirdenergy.com.au/?pcode=refer&ref=<code>

    • The issue is when new customers sign up they'll need to quote the email address or phone number of the referrer. See here.

      • Hi neil,

I had a look at the post you linked to and that's from 2019. I can confirm in the past, I had to enter the new customer's email or phone to be able to get Globird's system to send them a referral link. Globird updated their system, so I can now enter my own account details as a customer, to be given a unique referral link that lasts 5 months at a time which I can provide to others.

When I go through a dummy signup step, Step 5 (Confirm) shows the product and offer detail as bonus_referralbonus and promo code: refer, so I can only assume that Globird's system can work with ozbargain's as originally intended.

        cheers

        • OK, that's been changed to URL and all users notified to enter in their URLs.

        • Please note that we've switched back to PMs as Globird is now asking for the email/phone number of the referrer according to this comment, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13614570/redir.

      • sirspiff is correct. Globird have changed the system to remove the need to quote email address & phone number of the referrer. Now the referral steps are:

        1) referrer visit this site: https://quote.globirdenergy.com.au/referral and enter their account number and phone (or email).
        2) After pressing the "SHOW LINK" button the next page provides the referrer with a link to copy [screenshot here: https://imgur.com/a/xXj0Cxp]. There is no more need to put in referrer's personal details.

Note: the referral links lasts 6 month so OzBargain expiry needs to reflect that. If you need more details the link for the T&Cs goes here: https://imgur.com/a/xXj0Cxp

  • New amaysim user can only share referral via email now. The link is very long, which is different from the existing one in the system.

    Please see screenshots:
    Amaysim referral page: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/348761/95916/qq_202205…
    Referral email: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/348761/95917/qq_202205…

Existing referral link still works but is just not available to new users any more.

    • Thanks. Amaysim updated to Private Message.

  • Could we put "Koogle" into the referral system, it's basically a rebranding of a taxi app https://koogle.net.au/

both get $10, referee on their first trip, referrer (after referee takes 3 trips)

redemption is by promo code this is mine: TS5EOFLA

Couldn't find T's and C's, but it comes up on the app as a share link as such
"For the best rideshare experience join Koogle for a ride, Get $10 off when you take your first ride, download the app and sign up using this code : TS5EOFLA https://koogle.net.au/invite"

    • Koogle added.

  • Has everyplate referral format changed? I'm trying to enter now and it's saying wrong format?

    https://www.everyplate.com.au/plans?utm_campaign=clipboard&u…

    • when i copy the link from the app and enter it, it replies with wrong format but when copied from browser it works.

    • You need to remove utm campaign, utm source, utm medium from the link. Only the c= is what you need, the rest are just for stats tracking. I've added a note in there to not include it.

  • Hi!

In case it helps others, or admins may make it more clear, the Car Next Door section asks for the link in this format:
    https://carnextdoor.com.au/invited/{referral code}

In fact, only this format worked for me (ie. typing https://www. before the shortened link format)
    https://www.carnextdoor.com.au/invited/N2TQQY

    Cheers,
    Bruce

    • OK, both formats should be accepted now.

The URL they give is without the https:// or www but when you put in the URL in the browser it forwards to www.

  • Could we please add btc.com.au to the referral system. Their website: https://btc.com.au/

Referrer earns 30% commission on all fees paid for the lifetime of the referral.

So the benefit is all for charity: https://www.dementia.org.au/ and extra points to your Karma ;)

You get a referral link in the pop up after you make your first purchase.

    • While it is a good cause, there have been no deals posted and there is no benefit to either the referrer or referee. At this point, we won't be adding this into the system.

      • ok, all good thanks for considering

      • That's a shame, if you add it to the system you will be able to add up everyone who used it and claim it for marketing purposes and triple bottom line accounting. Ozbargain could add it to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:charity_donations

Also with the greying population and the fact it's third leading disease burden in Australia means that it's quite likely that someone related to the ozbargain community will benefit.

        From https://www.health.gov.au/news/announcements/dementia-in-aus…

Dementia is now the third-leading cause of disease burden in Australia. Up to 472,000 Australians are living with dementia, and more than half of people in residential aged care have dementia. Between 134,900 and 337,200 Australians are providing consistent unpaid care for a person with dementia.

  • Merged from Powershop OzBargain Referral System Working?

Hey fellas. Is the referral system for powershop working (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/powershop.com.au)?

Trying to sign up, but I always end up with a generic signup page without any ref token ID in the link. E.g. https://www.powershop.com.au/p/switchyourmates/

Don't want to use this if it doesn't activate the actual ref promo. Also it's not $75 for the first bill rather that $25 per quarter up to $100.

    • Updated to $75 credit. I can see referrers putting in links recently so probably safe to assume it works.

Merged from Why is referral code gets expired without notice?

Has anyone actually received any kind of referral from ozbargain ?

Also see most of the codes updated few months back just disappears and you don’t even realise your code is no more there for people to click

Any expiry or any sort set for referral codes? Particularly Amex card referrals

I have received $0 till now as referral for anything

    • The only one I have that expires every month is Revolut. I think the reason is that people could leave a company or not have an active account with them any more and therefore when the OzBargainer clicks on the referral link they won’t get the benefit/bonus.

      • The only one I have that expires every month is Revolut.

Revolut referral links change every calendar month.

        e.g. revolut.com……!MAY1-22-AR-HI for May
        revolut.com…!JUN1-22-AR

    • Has anyone actually received any kind of referral from ozbargain ?

Yes but some stores have 1000s of people in the referral system meaning the chances of getting a referral are very low.

Also see most of the codes updated few months back just disappears and you don’t even realise your code is no more there for people to click

The default expiry for all stores is 12 months. When a referral expires, the user is notified via the notification system. Alternatively, you can change the setting to email so you will also be emailed when your referral link/code expires.

Any expiry or any sort set for referral codes? Particularly Amex card referrals

Most of the American Express cards are set to 6 months due to people changing cards often. We tend to put stores where people tend to change more frequently like utilities, CC, Internet to shorter expiries than 12 months.

      • Thank you Neil for the clarification
Can the random link modified to be more random ( like whatever link or code is shown once does not repeat again for next 1000 times or so ?)

        • The random link served is random. The system de-prioritizes users who haven't logged in for a while (e.g. people signing up to OzBargain to stick their code in) vs. users who continue to actively use the site.

        • +1

What about also deprioritizing those who don't post deals in the last 12 months or if not deals, voted on so many deals/comments in the last 12 months?

That will serve as a gentle nudge to support those who post good deals on ozbargain. If the members have enough food to eat then they're more likely to have time to post, search for and describe good deals.

          • @brisdaz: Two points.

            • Given the long history we've had to get our referral system (referral links used to be at bottom of deal posts, posting limits etc.) to where we are now I can say that people will do anything to get their referrals used. This would include posting a nonsense deal to meet say a requirement of 1 deal every 12 months or voting randomly etc.
            • Members are not required NOR does is make a member better or more deserving than another member if they post deals. In fact, its something I see in the comments quite often. Of course, we want to see people posting good deals but it's not a requirement. There are members who only post competitions or post loads of comments on forum posts or just casually use the site. I'm not sure one group should be more revered than another as long we're all participating on OzBargain.
            • @neil: Thanks for your considered reply.

Sorry I didn't add enough explanatory text.

My suggestion was only a starting point. What are all the various ways one can contribute to the community anyway? What behaviour do we want to encourage that is pro-social?

Any method or process to fix a complex system will always have downsides or ways to game the system. It doesn't mean attempting to try isn't warranted, just maybe a long consultation period.

              • @brisdaz:

What behaviour do we want to encourage that is pro-social?

Improving The OzBargain Environment, Acting Respectfully & Goals for 2017

But as for referrals, I think its probably easier to look at it inversely. Those members who don't frequent the site as we currently do and perhaps you can make an argument for those who don't contribute positively to the site (e.g. those who have served penalties especially for referral SPAM). Would that be a carrot enough to encourage those members to contribute positively instead? Not sure but I feel like we'd be getting eerily close to China's social credit system.

    • To answer the opening poster question:

      1. Yes, I've received several Belong referrals - maybe up to $100 value or 5 referrals over a few years. I think I have also received a few Aussie Broadband referrals.

How long have you been in the system? It does take a few months depending on which referrals you have setup.
