they should do ubuntu if you change out the ssd

      • +3

Nevermind just Googled, it can do windows but it is missing a few key drivers, so not fully functional.

    • If you don't need keyboard, trackpad or power management as discussedin previous deal. LOL

Please tell me this is a joke. Why would you want to install that piece of rubbish on anything ?

      • Install WINDOWS 7 for Christ's sake, not that train wreck Windows 8.

        • -2

Or better yet, Vista, if you can find drivers.

        • No, Vista is nearly as bad as Windows 8.

    • I have read that the touchpad is not supported on windows. You can install linux. I myself have installed chrubuntu.

Don't use amazon's exchange rate (ie pay for the order in USD). You'll get a much better rate paying via paypal or even visa/mastercard. Amazon tend to mark up their exchange rate a bit from the market rate.

If you need to use a laptop to do specific tasks like graphic design, then this is not the laptop for you otherwise I think its great because most tasks are online these days.

And I think one day, someone will get the Windows 8 drivers..

I have actually received mine (32GB from the previous deal) this morning. Pretty quick shipping from Amazon. Currently just plain vanilla Chromebook but likely to install crouton to get a chroot Linux, which would really open up the oppotunity. It's surprisingly sturdy for a sub-$300 notebook. Screen is bright. Keyboard and touchpad aren't that good although my benchmark is my ThinkPad T-series & trackpoint.

    • When did you order?

      • Ordered evening of 29 March. Amazon said that they shipped on 31 March. Found it lying in my porch this morning. Delivered by AusPost.

        • lol they left it lying there? no sign on delivery?

        • Nope. Not even sure whether someone has rang the bell because I was at home the whole morning. But then again it might be expected behaviour from AusPost contractors.

  • is there any differences between acer c7 and this c720?

    • +1

The Chromebook entry on Wikipedia is quite comprehensive. C7 (or C710 in US) and C720:

      • C720 is a bit lighter (by 100g), thinner (by 8mm), Haswell based CPU with almost double battery hours, USB 3.0, Bluetooth.
      • C710 has VGA port, Ethernet port and I think it's possible to upgrade the RAM, whereas C720's 2GB is soldered onto the motherboard.
      • Thanks, no wonder searched c7 vs c720 and got nothing…

  • Can I install Microsoft Office on this thing? Sorry I'm a noob here

    • No.

It does work with Office 365. Also being a Chromebook you pretty much live on Google's ecosystem, i.e. Gmail, GDrive, GDoc, etc.

    • microsoft offers a free extension that lets you use word/powerpoint/excel online.

You can use google docs for offline work though.

Nooby question here, no real experience with chrome books, but I assume this'll play all media files?

For example, will it handle 720p/ 1080p videos (h264, xvid etc) well?

    Cheers.

With Haswell & Intel HD graphics it shouldn't have problem with 1080P videos. For the video files support see this help page. What I am trying to figure out now however is trying to get it to work with my NAS streaming media over DLNA.

I'm tempted by the soon-to-be-released Samsung Chromebook-2. Full-HD and 4GB ram. Twice the price, but still less than an ipad.

Typing this on my C720 that arrived from the last deal, very happy with it for the coin. No good if its your only computer, but great for couch surfing / light foruming.

  • I bought 32 GB from the previous deal. Got it delivered within 3 days through priority shipping. Wife used it for one day and the crapbook would not boot the next day morning. Plugged in for charging it thinking the battery died. That did not help. The power LED kept flickering fast and went from orange to blue eventually. But the book did not start. All google searches resulted in similar problems with other chromebooks including samsung, HP and acer. None of the supposed workarounds work with this one. Apparently a known issue. Do your research before buying this crap. Called acer support monday morning who asked a few things like remove the battery and do this or this. No such thing. The battery is non-removable. So even the support need support.

Anyway, sent it back to acer repair in NSW. Will wait and watch. Off to buy a real notebook now.

I bought one and havent had any problems at all. In fact it boots faster than any other computer I have ever used and the battery simply wont die because it lasts for what seems like an eternity. I mostly use the browser and word (it works offline as well).

I am more than happy with my purchase and would recommend this product. (Also installed linux to use for printing/torrents/proper file management/anything else that is not on chrome - for when I am not around my main computer.)
