Why don't more people travel to NZ?

I'm from Perth but originally NZ and am a pretty well travelled individual. But I notice that 90% of people just travel to SE asia these days, not saying it's bad just a bit monotonous. Sure everything is cheap but there is an amazing country right on your doorstep. Most of the people I know have been to bali/SE asia many times but none have gone to NZ???! The travel time is about the same, wayy less if your from the east coast.

IMO, (obviously biased cause Im from there) its the coolest country to visit for a variety of attractions so close together. Also your not constantly sweating it out when you go outside. You've got the North Island… amazing greenery, bay of islands, volcanoes, rotorua, the capital Wellington which is so quirky and cool. South island with awesome mountains, snow, glaciers. Queenstown which an awesome adventure capital of the Southern hemisphere. Bungy jumping pretty much everything you could think of.

Day on day Iam surprised by the peeps which havn't visited NZ but been to several other places. Most of the people which return are in shock/awe by the beautiful landscapes and lush greenery. All you could want + a safe 1st world country. Its also completely different/more diverse than Tasmania which I know people will compare it to. It's also was pretty good value when the Aus $ was alot stronger vs NZ, hopefully it will rebound in the future.

*Shameless plug for NZ

I did Queenstown skiing a few years back and had an adrenalin blast.
But to be honest SEA is more exotic, edgey and hits all the senses.

And it's nice to order from a menu without glancing at the right hand column. ie I can take off my OzB hat when in asia.

    • +5

+1. In most of SEA you can stuff your face silly and drink all the best wine without worrying about the price. Clothing is cheap, and that means you can travel light and buy all your stuff there.

Can't do that in NZ as the exchange rate is still almost 1:1 with AUD.

    • +2

Asia is more exotic, everything is cheap, accommodation, food, activities.. to do the same in NZ, it would cost you sooo much more and being on a holiday, you need stable weather, weather like Australia is crap.. 4 seasons in one day.. the last time I went to QLD, it rained the entire stay, money wasted.

  • +7

I wouldn't mind going there again, great scenery, lovely people. Perhaps it's too similar in many respects to Oz and people are looking for something exotic. NZ is one country but Asia is many countries, palpably distinct.

  • +3

Perhaps you could find & post an awesome deal to NZ - and do your wee but for Kiwi tourism.

    • +3

I'd really prefer he not do his wee but.

  • +12

Probably because there are too many kiwis there!….joking!!!

  • +3

Well if it makes you feel any better, I haven't been to SE Asia (apart from Transit stops to Europe) but I have been to NZ and would happily go back.
Value is undoubtedly the main reason though.
Air-Fares are the same or cheaper (especially to Bali), but you can buy 10 beers in Bali for the same price as 1 in NZ (or Oz)! Ditto for food and entertainment.
There's also the fact that SE Asia is Australia's gateway to the rest of the world, so you can stop in for a few days on your way elsewhere.

  • +13

    NZ - Whale watching 4 hours = $140
    Cambodia - Angkor Wat 7 days = $60

    • +4

Whale watching is something I don't want to do again. So little to see for so much expense and effort. Tramping in a NP, that gives better return for time.

      • +1

I went whale watching on my first trip, agree that it's not really worth the cost for what you see. There is plenty of wildlife to be seen elsewhere for free!

        • +2

I went whale watching in Iceland which was absolutely awesome! Saw plenty of whales and even a group of Orcas eating a Mink Whale.

        • That sounds epic! I am super keen to get over to Iceland. I managed to see a few Sperm Whales on my cruise which was pretty cool, but the cost/experience ratio is probably a touch high in NZ.

        • Iceland is meant to be amazing. On my Tattslotto win wishlist!

        • +2

I went to Japan and ATE a Minke whale, absolutely awesome!

just up past the 109 building in the Shibuya Dogenzaka, fyi. lunch is about 30 bucks for Minke.

        • Really? I had heard that whale meat was so so. It wasn't even a traditional Japanese food except in times of famine.

        • It's not bad. I had some whale sashimi and thought it tasted somewhere in the middle of raw beef and raw tuna. I would prefer to eat tuna for the taste but it's probably more environmentally responsible to eat whale instead.

        • -1

I'm a bit confused. You guys have been tried to stop the Japanese hunting whales.
But you want to try the whale meat & sperm & some do love it.

  • +1

I've been to NZ twice in the last 12 months, loved it so much the first time I booked my second trip pretty much the second I got back. Haven't even done the North Island yet, as I found so much that I loved to do on the South Island. I think it's a great place to visit, but so many of the people I know discount it as a destination and do choose those SE Asia holidays instead. I'm fine with this, leaves less people to pollute and clog up the beautiful National Parks of NZ :P
I found it a hugely affordable holiday, especially if you get the airfares cheap. I stayed in backpackers the first time and campervanned the second. Both hugely enjoyable, and very different experiences.
The appeal of SE Asia to my friends (early 20's age group) is the cheap booze and shopping. None of my friends seem to have any interest in doing any activities which don't culminate in a cool selfie and some cheap drinks at the end of the night.

  • +22

    The in-laws are there.

NZ is pretty much last on my list of countries I would like to visit.

  • I love NZ and had my honeymoon there.
I also have some rellies there I would be happy to visit.
But in terms of value for money it just doesn't stack up well against SE Asia for me - especially since I live in Perth.

  • +1

I am australian, but my best friend is from, new zealand
, auckland. She lived in australia but moved back last year. I went to visit back in august and Can honestly say it is an amazing country and I love it so much ! I am going back in a few weeks time And I cannot wait!
I boast about nz daily saying how nice it is and talking about the times I had there in auckland city & parnell and eating burger fuel haha im super excited to return and I no doubt will spend a lot of my life over there as it is a special place and so close to home.

    Everyone needs to goto nz!

  • +2

The fact that petrol is $2.16 - $2.37 a litre is a major turn off

I just did the entire South Island about a month and a half ago and it was awesome but there were 3 of us so petrol costs weren't that bad but yeah.

    • But yes I agree New Zealand is awesome.
Every European thinks it's the best place on this earth..
I would agree if I could afford to do everything and it was slightly warmer in summer.

  • +2

I looked into it and chose SE Asia. For cheapish flights to Christchurch from Perth, I was looking at 12 hours of flying + transit and $1000+ return. I could get to and from SE Asia for less than half of that. If I had unlimited $$ I'd love to go to NZ and do adventure activities there, but right now it's way more affordable to have a SE Asian adventure and live like a King ;)

    • +1

Haha I see what you did there ;).

  • +1

Yeah. In too many ways it's just very similar cultural, cuisine and activity wise. And it's not cheap in comparison to other holidays. And on the other hand, I like going to warm places. We travelled the whole country over the course of February last year and we're cold the entire time!

  • +2

I did NZ last Oct'13 but craving to go again in full winter….

  • -6

Been to USA and NZ and would do both again. I have absolutely NO interest in going anywhere near any part of Asia. My sister went to Bali and Java (for a friends wedding in Java)and though she would go back to Bali said everything this else was horrible. Even parts of Bali were only just tolerable but enough to enjoy another visit.
I love NZ, the places i went to (Nth Island only) were beautiful and the people were extremely friendly and helpful as it was my first trip OS and i went on my own. Would love one day to check out the Sth Island.
Quality comes so much higher than price where my comfort is concerned.

    • +2

She thinks it's horrible? She sounds like a real explorer.

      • +1

A person does not have to have visited many places to know if one they have visited is to their liking or not. You either like it or not!

    • +15

Some people just don't know how to enjoy themselves in a 3rd world country. Bali is just like any other place except the tourism industry has just made the entire place into a dump — people go there just for cheap thrills and aren't really there to enjoy the local culture.

      • +1

Well it was my Sister not friend, and she said Bali was OK and would go back there. It was Java and a few other places (i can't recall the names of) that were dirty and smelly and just not pleasant.
I have felt this way for many years and not just because of what my sister said. Why was i negged for stating an opinion of what i like and don't like as was asked for?
I have NO interest in going to any Asian country, i also have NO interest in going to any South American country or Middle Eastern country. I did not mention the other places i DON'T want to go to as they were not part of the topic. Am i not allowed to have an opinion on where i would like to visit?
This site is getting way too judgmental and i am seeing so many negged posts because others don't like that persons opinion if it differs to theirs.

        • @Rel63 You are entitled to your opinion and I didn't/won't neg you for that but it sounds like you have never been to many/all of the places you have no interest in going. That's alright too, some people are not travellers. Oh well, your loss.

    • +3

There is the bali for party goes and poor Aussies and bogans (this is the bali I knew on my first 2 trips). Noisy, street hasslers, violent, dirty. Then there is the bali for fat German tourists wearing speedos and the new Russian elite, a completely different experience surrounded by luxury, prestige and memorable experiences (my last 3 trips). Bali is a true destination where you choose your own outcomes as a traveller.

    • Horrible?
I live in Australia buy come from NZ and I've worked and travelled in Indonesia quite a lot. I feel qualified to make the following points
-the South Island of nz is unbelievably beautiful, mountains waterfalls rivers glaciers - lived there for 30 yeas and it still takes my breath away.
It is a truly beautiful place, plus if you go to christchurch you can see there is a great spirit and pride amongst the ruins, things like a shipping container shopping strip.

Indonesia, it's a really beautiful place too, although Jakarta is totally overcrowded and massive traffic jams all the time, but it's not a tourist destination it just another big city like Bangkok.
Also I find Kuta to be not great unless you enjoy hanging with drunk bogens and being sold shorts constantly.
There are also major problems with pollution in various places.

Apart from that there are many wonderful and beautiful places and Indonesians are really nice people, I places like Gilli island are like paradise, ubud is beautiful, it's a great destination.

Finally the more I see of Australia the more I love it, I really appreciate what an amazing country we live in, I guess wherever we go we have fun, it's more about your attitude

  • -5

It seems from that car crash investigation tv show based in NZ, 3 out of 4 people in NZ are asian folks. Maybe people skip NZ because they want to see them in their natural habitat. ;-p

  • Double post.

  • +3

Australia and NZ are way too similar. The appeal of going to SEA is to experience something new. Why would i want to go for holiday to NSW when i live in VIC?, etc

    • +1

Australia and NZL could not be further apart. Both have totally different cultures and scenery. Australia is great for the shopping and rustic scenery, NZL is great for the average adrenaline junky, with great powder down the slopes, and other extreme sport. Add the greenery of mountains and fields, and you have what is practically untouched.

People are different, although we both are lucky enough to share the nicest of people, a lot of people (including a fair chunk of immigrants) prefer the Kiwi attitude, friendliness and acceptance, the Maori's are praised and celebrated with equality, and hold major roles in the running of NZL (although Australia in the past few years have begun their transition).

idk, thats just my opinion, but i could be bias because i was born and raised there and moved to Melbourne when i was a kid.

      • +6

I don't think Australia is great for shopping. Hong kong is great for shopping. I don't shop much but don't see value of goods here in AUS.

        Just my opinion.

        • haha Asia would be good for shopping if you want a great deal, but you hear about the numerous celebrities, athletes, bands who come here and openly promote the versatility and multicultural aspect of food and shopping in Melbourne (where I'm from), and other cities. We are lucky enough to have every feasible option, we can have a different cuisine every day of the year and it's just around the corner. In that, it is great for shopping and food.

That is what i meant. i didn't mean in regards to its financial worth lol. We even pay premiums for Australian Made products whereas Americans pay less even though they are importing it from here.

People tell me that NZ is amazing and the pics in internet is so unbelievable. It's such a precious destination to me now that I don't wanna go there for a weekend or short holiday. Planning to do some locum jobs, that way I can see more & do more.
Maybe this year or next we are also planning for a baby so after that I can leave my biological baby with his/her mother and take my mechanical baby (guzzi) with me and do NZ.

  • been to NZ twice - mostly North Island. enjoyed it both times. had booked a third trip last year but had to cancel due to ill health. would love to check out the south island.

  • Last time I checked New Zealand was the top travelled to destination by Australians (approx 1.1 million in 2012-2013).

Lived in NZ for a year a long time ago. Great place, would love to go back, have loads of kiwi mates over there that I've kept in touch with. Indeed I could go as far to say that NZ is 'choice!'.

No interest at all in SEA, personally cant think of anywhere I would rather avoid than a Bali full of drunken Australian Bogans, knockoff counterfeit stuff and questionable sanitation. I've tolerated a couple of trips to Singapore and Hong Kong. Japan was great, happily go back there but little interest in any of the other spots.

  • +2

Its over run with orcs and hobbits.

  • +3

I wore a cute little sheep onesie to NZ last time I was there… The resulting experience was too horrible to describe.

  • I like to get away when it's cold and dark down here in OZ, i.e. June/July, where it's even colder. So places like Bali and Thailand are great around that time of year, especially if you feel like going for a swim (or just enjoy the beach).

And yes, while the airfares may be a little dearer to SE Asia, the food and drink (esp. cocktails), accommodation and other incidentals are usually quite a bit cheaper.

  • +2

I think you are using your West Aust experiences which as you know is different from the East Coast.

Travel to NZ from Perth is 10 plus hours if you are lucky. Vs SE Asia

On the East Coast you will find trips to NZ are a lot easier than than to SE asia so results would be different if you conducted your survey

Does not have much wow factor when you talk to other people.

And…. not enough OZB NZ deals posted.

P.S. I am half joking by the way.

  • I've had two holidays in NZ and thoroughly enjoyed both.
But it was years ago and in those days the AUS$ went a bit further than it does now.
First time was a camping tour of both islands in summer.
Second time was a winter skiing holiday based in Queenstown, where the scenery is simply Remarkable.

I grew up in Tasmania. My perception of New Zealand is just a colder place with more snow, and I don't really care for the adventure stuff (plus anything like that is usually very expensive). Therefore it's not high up on my places to visit. I still wouldn't mind going one day.

As for Asia, I go all the time (my uni campus). :P No, I haven't been to anywhere there either. It's also not that interesting to me. I'm more interested in Europe, South America, and Africa.

  • +9

A few reasons. A big one is that NZ is culturally pretty similar to Australia. I could walk down a street in NZ and not be certain I wasn't still in Australia without reading some sign posts. The food is virtually identical, the language is the virtually the same, and I've seen both Tongan Ninja and Bad Taste. NZ is not particularly culturally interesting.

The other big one, which I figured you'd understand as a Perth resident, is cost. As a little tester - I'm intending on going on holiday for 9 days at some point in June, leaving on a Friday and returning on a Sunday.

So let's pick somewhere in SE Asia I haven't been. Vietnam. I'm after relaxation so do a little googling… Phu Quoc looks nice. Touristy enough that I don't have to worry about being in over my head but no so touristy I'm just going to be stuck in a hotel with an attached McDonalds the entire time. Off to Adioso… and I can get return tickets to Ho Chih Minh City for $398 from June 6-15. But the flight times and stopovers make it a shorter holiday than I was intending so let's change that to leaving Thursday. $392 return now with a night + day in KL on the way over, which sounds nice. I'll go with that.

I'll arrive at Ho Chi Minh City on Fri 20 Jun 8:40pm which means I'll miss out on the last flight to Phu Quoc so it's a night and day in Ho Chi Minh City, which I'm certain I'll enjoy. Then off to Phu Quoc at 6pm the next day - flights to and from the island are ~$50, so ~$100 retun. I can stay in a cheap little place for $20 per night and I always prefer to stay in those cheaper places - resorts and fancy hotels hold no interest to me.

    So all up:
    PER-KUL $149
1 night a nice very well reviewed in Kuala Lumpur called Rumah Putih $69
Travel to the hotel and back to airport as well as public transport and food/water during the day would probably come to ~$40
    KUL-SGN $67
1 night in Ho Chih Minh City for ~$25 (plenty of places $15-$35)
Travel to the hotel and back to airport as well as public transport and food/water during the day would probably come to ~$40
Ho Chih Minh —> Phu Quoc $50
    Accomodation in Phu Quoc ~$120
    Food/drink in Phu Quoc ~$100
    Transport in Phu Quoc ~$25
Phu Quoc —> Ho Chih Minh $50
    Transport to appropriate terminal ~$10
    SGN-KUL $83
1 night in KUL, just the Tune Hotel this time 'cause I leave as soon as I wake $25
    Transport ~$20
    KUL-PER $93

All costs considered a 9 day holiday in which I get to see KL & Ho Chih Minh City for a day and relax at Phu Quoc for 6 days costs ~$966.

If you're going to complain about the stop overs, fair enough. But… if you want a simple 2 hour layover on the way there and a 5 hour one on the way back the flights go up $122 but you drop the $69 + $40 + $25 + $20 for accomm/transport in KL. So it's ~$934. I just like the idea of checking out KL & HCMC for the day.

So let's look at NZ in June.

I can get a round trip to Auckland for $654. Food's going to cost me at least $30/day if I don't just cook for myself. More like $50/day if I eat and drink like I will for ~$15/day in Vietnam. Accommodation at anywhere vaguely OK will be a minimum of $65/night, probably more like $80/night. This is assuming I don't travel and just hang around and relax in Auckland. Transport costs will likely be ~$100 just to get to and from the airport.

So if I go to the cheapest flight destination in NZ and stay somewhere moderate, eat and drink moderately and don't do anything it'll set me back around $1,500. $1,800 for a nicer place, better food/drink, but still not going anywhere.

If I want to travel I'm probably best off hiring a car for ~$45/day + ~$15/day worth of fuel. Any activity but sightseeing would cost a fair whack, probably $50-$250 depending on what it was. So you'd have to up the total to about $2,500 to make the trip slightly interesting.

To make it really interesting you'd have to splurge on all sorts of expensive stuff. Bungy jumps, whale watching, Hobbit Land or whatever they call it, skiing, helicopter rides to see mountains and whatnot, fancier restaurants, all that sort of thing. You'd probably have to up it to $3,000-$4,000.

Obviously variables will be different for different people.

But as a solo traveller I'd rather spend under $1k and see/experience/taste something considerably different from what I've got at home.

  • Yes I can see where you are coming from. I have also done the SE Asia bit but seem to have a renewed interest in returning to Qld in our cold Victorian Winters; Gold Coast again soon. Although I have travelled and lived fairly extensively almost everywhere in Australia I have yet, incredibly, to set foot in Tasmania. So perhaps after a Fiji/Samoa holiday next time I will try for Tassie following that; may look into the car ferry idea as opposed to flying and hiring vehicle. Depending on the finances would love to visit NZ after that. Some of the NZ tourism videos do appear rather scenic and interesting. Oddly enough you don't seem to see many discount vouchers for NZ in our coupon sites; perhaps we need to see a few more financially attractive coupon offers to entice us. Must say SE Asia and Fiji do seem well represented with those discount coupons.

I have been NZ and eup. i know you mean about NZ i think people are most people are poor. SE Asia is cheep so poor people can be rich. I spent holdays in Eup. i been to asia a few time i found it so poor. bail is a hole.

My partner and I went to the south island a few years ago after seeing some dirt cheap Virgin flights on OzBargain. Booked the flights without thinking much and when the time came to leave we were both really busy with work and almost didn't bother going. I'm so glad we did, it was the most amazing week. We just hired a car in Christchurch and drove around the south island. I've been to Iceland, Canadian Rockies, and right through Africa, and I've never seen natural beauty like New Zealand. It will blow your socks off, even if you've read about it and seen the ads on TV.

Main negative about NZ: For some reason they have weird Thai food, very sweet and goopy. Went to three different Thai restaurants in different cities, all the same.

    • +1

haha i love how you ended the positive review of New Zealand with bad Thai food. for some odd reason, rather than deterring, i feel the need to fly over to NZL and try out some Thai.

  • Because NZ and Australia are one and the same. I like sheep, but really what does NZ have?

(PS- I've been to all-around-NZ on a two-week tour and then stayed over at a friend who was studying at Auckland for a week or so). I feel sleepy for the most of part. It's the perfect country to retire at.

  • Actually statistically NZ is the number one tourist destination for Australians. I love NZ and have been there three times. Am planning to take my elderly parents for the first time this year. I've traveled many places, but this I know is true. NZ is like heaven on earth…and I'm from Tasmania. :)
