I bought a yamaha receiver and speaker pack recently. I also know a friend who has the logitech system. With the included stock speakers the logitech system blows away the yamaha receiver. With quality (very expensive) speakers the yamaha receiver blows away the logitech.

I really dont think you could find too much better value / quality for $267

I own a set of Z5500s (the predecessor to these ones) and I've got to say, they sound a whole lot better than a lot of home theatre set ups I've heard, to be honest. I think you'd have to be spending quite a bit more (i.e. double) to get a noticeable better set up - I would like to be proven wrong though :)

I'm sure these speakers are very good, the reviews are quite good.
As for critical listening, speaker placement, room acoustics, the quality of the source and even your mood make significant differences on sound quality/perception.

      • +1

I've heard the Z5500 before and they are certainly very good value for money. You'd not even be able to get a entry level receiver at this price point :)

You can buy a bluray home theatre system for less, and Pioneer recevier/speaker kits are regularly around this price

      Are you joking?

A decent receiver like a Pioneer VSX-522/523/527 costs as much as the Z906s alone.

The only people who buy cheap 5.1 home theatre systems are the ignorant and even then, the cheapest, brand-name 5.1 home theatre systems are around the $300 mark.

You need a grand minimum for any combination of individually-bought hardware that'll sound as good and as loud as these Z906s.

Suggesting people go out and buy some Teac or Panasonic 5.1 setup for around $200 is announcing your electronics illiteracy to everyone else. Those things are garbage.

Dafatha's remark was absolutely spot-on. For $267 dollars these will give the best listening experience to 90% of people with 90% of audio sources.

I agree, I wasn't meaning to suggest people don't buy this, and go for a cheap HTIB, but you can find some amazing packages these days on sale. They actually sound good if you give them a proper listen and they include the bluray player and ease of use as everything is all together.
I disagree on the Pioneer amp/speakers, they were $250 at dicksmith and jb hifi recently and that setup would compare quite well, and offers HDMI, HD decoding and is upgradable.
I think people overrate amplifiers, the base models produce excellent sound, just miss the bells and whistles most people don't need.

Z906s are garbage too. Most people would be better off with a pair of powered bookshelf speakers.

        • Well by all means find some for $200 or less that sound decent and deliver the room-saturating sound these days.

Not saying the Z906s are audiophile quality but they are as good as most people need speakers to be.

      • Agree with Amar89. This setup will please most people most of the time. They've been on sale a few times for $280 at DSE and sell out pretty fast.

Am going to agree as well. Have a Z5500 since 2008, still blasting through with Optical output. When picking up a good 5.1 surround system for the parents, I was trying to configure a Onkyo. With decent quality receiver, subwoofer and speakers, the price was shy of $1000. Bought them a Z5500 and they couldn't be happier.

  • +5

Good deal. JB want $488, and DSE are asking $399.

  • These things any good for music? I'm sure they rock for games and Bass-thumping, but I'm more interested in whether they can do decent midrange etc. for classical/jazz/movie stuff. Too many of these kinds of sets just don't have the quality across the range to do that kind of music justice..

    • +1

Not very good for music. If you want music quality then go for the audioengine A5+ which is on special 299 from pccg

      • -1

Thanks. That is what I thought. Too bad the A5+ isn't 5.1, though I'm sure there's a way to make that happen.+

    • +1

I've found the Logitech setups to be very bass-heavy, so great for games and even most movies, but underwhelming for 'most' music. I'm sure they'd suit house/club music though.

      • +1

Nope, an electronic fan like me was supremely underwhelmed by the sloppy, one note bass of the logitech Z5500/Z906. Sold them a day later. Electronic music requires fast accurate bass despite what people may think.

        • +1

Agreed, I often listen to tech and deep house, and these speakers under-performed greatly.

I own z5500 and a $700 pioneer receiver with $4000 worth of jensen sub/speakers and I prefer the logitechs. I do love having a dedicated amp because it has a radio built in, but I'll be putting my big speakers on gumtree soon enough. My brother has z906 and says they're just as good as z5500 just with a smaller sub. I guess it all depends how loud you like things and also if you can fine tune the subwoofer, midrange, treble etc but I agree the logitechs are extreme value for money. For less than $300 every household should have a set! PS logitechs boom for outdoors/camping is extremely awesome too

These are excellent speakers for the price but they don't have HDMI. This is important because HDMI is replacing optical and analogue connections. Many new media steaming boxes (Roku 3, Amazon Fire, Chromecast, various Android boxes) and even some new blu-ray media players don't have optical or surround-sound analogue. Without HDMI you won't be able to connect these speakers to these media players, unless your TV is capable of converting to optical surround sound (unusual) or you use an expensive receiver.

Optical & Coaxial audio are surprisingly limited. They can't carry uncompressed surround sound, it has to be compressed as (lossy) Dolby Digital or DTS. If your source device isn't DD or DTS (i.e. many surround sound computer games) you won't get digital surround sound. Some high-end computer motherboards have 'DTS connect' and can do a conversion but most can't.

Furthermore, the new Blu-ray lossless audio codecs (Dolby TruHD etc) carry much higher resolution audio signals 'HD Audio' and cannot pass over coaxial or optical digital cables. The data rate of optical/coax is too low to fit these codecs. But then again, the Z906 can't decode these formats anyway. Instead the Z906 relies on the 'legacy' DD/DTS files included on most(?all?) Blu-ray.

HDMI can carry all this, as well as uncompressed (LPCM) 8-channel audio. And it supports things like audio return channel which enables the TV to send audio in the opposite direction back to the speakers (i.e. for Digital TV/DVB-T). You don't have to stuff around with codecs or high-end motherboards.

    • +1

While that is correct, the majority of people would have a VERY hard time telling the difference between a lossless HD audio track and the lossy DD or DTS version (from the same movie on the same disc).

      • True but if your device only has HDMI, you might not have any audio at all (without conversion equipment).

Don't get me wrong - I love my Z-5500's. But they mean that I have to use a PC to run PLEX because most android media boxes don't have optical out.

  • Own one of these logitech Z906 paired together with a media player such as WD Live will provide a enjoyable movie experience, in regards to bass you can always adjust bass level. Haven't found a fault with these speakers thus far would recommend it for an above entry home theatre setup good price atm. Not having HDMI input hasn't really bothered me so far as most things still use optical.

    • WD live doesn't have optical audio out from memory.

  • This or Audioengine A5+ ?? Hard to choose….

    • If you must have 5.1 then get this. If not, the Audioengine A5 blow these away by a fair margin.

  • At this price point you'd be better off with a pair of good speakers than six mediocre ones, also much less hassle with wiring, mounting, etc.

  • "Price match OW", who is OW?

    • Office Works ……

    • Office Works.
      Whoops. Forgot to click post.

  • I phoned office works to get the price match happening, she told me they won't do it because MSY offers "onsite warranty" and Office Works go off "factory warranty" thus not making it like for like.. ><

They looked hard to get out of that one

    • Call back and tell Office Works that MSY don't do onsite warranty with Logitech Items.

    • +2

The first older lady i spoke to just did not want to make the pricematch, she had me on hold for 7 minutes while seeing if she would do it or finding a way not to do it.
I called MSY who lol'd at me saying whether they do onsite warranty or factory warranty.

I called OW again spoke to a younger consultant who said no issues at all with the price match with in a minute of looking at MSY.

Order placed over the phone and should be delivered today for free.

Total amount pd as OP Said $253.65.

First lady trolled me, i'm not even mad

      • +2

Look at the bright side, you at least got trolled by the First Lady. :D

  • +1

Woohoo new speakers on their way!!

  • I got the z506 already which IMO is pretty garbage. How do these z906 compare?
