  • Very tempting! Been wanting a pair of these for a while now.

  • +1

If I didn't already have a set of Swan M50W's, I'd totally pick this up and the subwoofer: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

    • +1

      I have both M50W and A5+.

IMO, A5+ are better for music and M50W are good for movie because of the subwoofer.

Both are great speakers anyway :)

    • don't get other subs. i never tried it, but with that price, would rather to get new or 2nd hand Velodyne. Velodyne is the best Sub company in Audio Industries.

  • I have had the A5 (not A5+) for a few years now and I must say these are the most amazing PC speakers.

The only issue I have with these speakers (not sure if its the same issue with the A5+) is that when playing music very low, or have the volume knob high but have the system volume low the speakers stop working after a few minutes.

    • same problem here. also a popping sound

      • And a lot of static noise when I place a phone cable connected to a router near it

  • hmm..tempting.

how good are these to be used as "non-PC" speakers. ie for Music, TV, Movies etc in a larger room setting - ie Lounge Room?

    • Its pretty average tbh if listening direct from the TV. You will want a decent amp or sound card to make the most out of these speakers.

These speakers are VERY loud, so it will be loud enough to piss off the neighbours.

    • I took my old A5s out to the lounge room temporarily when my amp blew up…they held up surprisingly well. But it is hard to generalise about the acoustics of lounge rooms.

At the very least while not ideal, they're a lot better than TV speakers.

    • I've used them on holidays as music speakers a few times. Definitely decent for it, though as mangolassi mentions probably not ideal for a lounge room.

  • I loved my old A5s until the caps blew (or something. Getting some bad scratching noises).

Been thinking of repairing them, but…

  • As an average consumer who likes good sound what's the best way to listen to these through a PC? Sound card or dac or other equipment?

    • You can get away if you have a decent sound card. If not there is also the Audioengine D1 DAC

      http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

      • Hmmmmm $468 for both does make it sound ………… But when I purchase will it sound :)

      • A Schiit Modi/Magni combo could be good, too. http://schiit.com/

I've got some new death z-2300s (have died twice) and I'm wanting to upgrade…but after extensive looking, I've settled on some Aktimate Mini+…but haven't bought them yet……..hmmmmm what to do.

        • +8

and here come the schiity puns

        • bullschiit

        • Only downside with the Modi is that it doesn't have optical in, unless you go the Bitforest but that costs US$349 + shipping

        • Why would you use a magni, a headphone amp, to drive powered speakers.

        • I'd like to know too…just curious. Any audio experts care to comment?

I think maybe the headphone amp/dac may function as a preamp.

        • I was implying that it was stupid suggestion.

You only need the dac, lower end amps have a fixed voltage on rca, let alone even a pre-out.

        • The magni is just a headphone amp, RCA in > headphone out.

      • I think for that case I'd be looking more at the Cambridge Audio M5 - 2.1 speakers with real audiophile chops and a built-in DAC. Amazon UK has them for £99 - or $178 (delivery costs would probably hurt though).

    • +1

check here if you thinking of getting dac: http://www.reddit.com/r/Zeos/comments/1ue3t5/20_system_recom…

Behringer UCA202 is most recommended for those on a budget. cheaper than sound card. but if going for sound card then it will be asus probably.

  • deleted, wrong

  • I know nothing about this kind of stuff- are these monitors? Good for entry level music production? Bass'y?

    • +3

I have the A2's and they are definitely coloured. I suggest getting some actual monitors like Behringers or Samsons. Can be had cheap. Much flatter response will make your mixes better.

      • +4

Not sure why negged. These are really good for the price. But they aren't real monitors, they're colored to have a hifi sound.

        • +2

Yeah, I never said they were bad speakers, quite the opposite, you probably cant get get better for the cash. But to answer the question, No, these aren't monitors.

If you are going to be doing a decent amount of listening as well as production, then these are a great choice.

    • Yes they are bassy, somewhat mid centric and smooth. Not sure what you're planning on producing but they might not translate well to other systems

  • Can these speakers be used for karaoke?

    • +4

Seems like a bit of a waste…depending on your voice. Nope, still a waste.

  • +2

    $26 for shipping/delivery to Sydney

  • Are they worth $100 more than the A2's?
edit: are they worth the usual $200 more than the A2's

    • +1

They're much bigger than the A2's so those who prefer more oomph & louder volumes should get them. Plus it comes with a remote whereas the A2s don't

      • +2

Also the A2+ has built in DAC, whereas the A2 and A5+ don't

        • Interesting. Ok thanks

  • Bought to upgrade my Altec Lensing for which I have for 10 years and refusing to die. These fellow have moved to Mulgrave. I used to live 2 street from that place.

  • +1

nice first post OP - well done.

  • +2

I now waiting for the S8 to drop down to $299 as well :).

  • I've had a pair of these for a couple of years plugged into an Airport Express. Excellent speakers and more than enough to fill a reasonable size room.

  • Sensational for $299. Added a Sony $70 sub from one of the Grays OZB deals and holy moley! Happy! And I am picky!

  • I haven't seen these on sale before, ever. Got lucky and ended up buying A5+ on Gumtree for $230. If you're considering getting these now is the time to get them. No regrets.

  • Can I replace my Z906 speakers with them?

    • If you want clarity over bass, get them. If not, keep the Z906s

  • I have my eyes on a Sp2500, are the audioengines better?

    • +1

The Corsairs are more of a bassy gaming speaker set than anything else. They're good but if you want studio quality speakers then get these

  • +1

What sub-woofer would go well with these speakers? The Audioengine S8 is abit too steep ($399)…

  • Depends on what you intend to listen to but I never got around to buying a sub because even without one the range on these speakers is exciting (you'll see what I mean!).

  • Ive had the a5+ and aktimate mini, and the aktimate is better. For this special to happen more than likely the a5+ is going to be superseded in the near future but still a good deal.

    • I have the Aktimate Mini and it is awesome. But it is also pricier than the A5, I paid about $500 for the Mini in 2010.

For $299 the A5 is a good deal IMO.

    • Thanks for the suggestion. I have never heard of aktimate mini until today. Just wondering any bargain site for the aktimate mini+?

      • Can vouch for the aktimate, they are great speakers. Managed to get a set in Singapore for around $350 I think and that was the only special I've seen. Not that it matters since it was in a different country. I guess google is your friend.

  • I had the original A5's, hope the plus version are better. Volume was uneven at lower volumes and would get a static noise when turning them up. They would often overheat as well. Then to the sound if you like a bloated boomy bottom end and weak mids and highs, they seem like a good choice.

  • Do these compare to something like a series 5 sound bar from Samsung?
i want to use it mainly for console gaming but want a minimalistic yet effective sound system

  • I currently have a set of Logitech Z506's, I'm really happy with them.

My question would be, how much better are these than my cheap speakers?

$300 is quite a lot of money and I would like to know what they offer for the price.

    Cheers.

    • +1

These are some of the best PC speakers you can get and are really good. But if you're willing to put the work in you're better off getting a cheap second hand amplifier and some old good quality speakers.

      • ^This.

If you actually love the monotone bloated bass from all logitech speakers, then this might be a downgrade. Save your money and buy a proper passive + amp setup when you get a taste for decent/reference sound.

      • I use these in our living area and they fill the room. I can't imagine having them as PC or Console speakers as you'd never have them on full volume.

      • I went from the A5's to a NAD C320 with Cambridge Sirocco S30's. Bit of a price difference, but definitely worth it in my opinion.

    • The logitech's are tuned for bass. They also have a sub. So the logitechs will punch you in the gut with explosions and gun fire, while the Audioengines have a more balanced sound which is better for music. Not so good for impact in movies/games.

  • Audiophiles! Hows this compare to Usher S-520's for music if anyone heard them please?

(Realize these are powered and the Ushers need a receiver.)Have put my ushers + receiver on my main tv unit now after getting married. Now my computer is lonely for music:(

  • Trying to buy A5+ with D1 DAC. Commonwealth Bank credit issue stopping me!

Been wanting A5+ for a very long time. Can't wait to replace my Z623.

  • I already own a set of Logitech Z906, going to just add these A5+ to the current setup for that bit more clarity that I lack. Would it be best to remove the satellite/surround speakers from the Z906 and just keep its sub or should I just mess with their eq somehow? Any suggestions appreciated.

  • So tempted with this special however a mates redirected my attention to the Swan M50s which are suppose to sound better in the mids. Does anyone have any experience for a direct comparison?

As the Swans are a bit dearer at $335 from PCCG too but I've never seen Audioengines discounted EVER…what to do. Ah first world problems…

  • +1

Website says it is SOLD OUT at 11:00am.

My old Audioengine 5 is busted, this could have been a good replacement.

I've picked this up today. Setting it up is a breeze. It is a bit too boomy for me. I think this can be improve once I placed it on a stand. I don't think I will need a subwoofer for this anymore as it has plenty of bass. I was not that impress as I have been spoiled by some great headphone. It sounds decent when playing audiophile recorded flac via foobar wasapi device Xonar Essence STX. The mid tone is a bit recess for my taste. I have not burnt the speak in yet. My assessment may change when that happened. For $300 I am happy.
