No they don't, don't get them confused as they charge outrageous amounts at the gate if you don't pre purchase baggage.

Fly to Christchurch, drive down. I've done it plenty of times with between 6 and 13 people… fill a hire van, swap the driving, the drive will fly by. Stop a few times at some sights and make a trip out of it - awesome fun.
Pro tip: Volunteer for first driving shift, then sit in the back of the van sinking beer for the next 4 or 5 hours.
